You guys don't have a clue. The dumbest lyrics in the universe could never
have been written by anyone else but someone who's one of the world's best
guitar players, who simply momentarily forgot that he isn't a good lyricist.

"There's a hole in the sky
      But don't ask me why
      'Cause I do-ho-ho-hon't know..."

Still, he also penned down the rather better next line:

"You broke my heart just to see
How many pieces there would be..."

Anyone care to guess who I mean?

I'm to depart later today from O'Hare and head home, so this is my last spot-check of my e-mail (many of you who mailed me are getting early replies... I'll get the rest of 'em done when I get home).

I don't see why everyone's cutting on the new Queensryche album so much. I dig it. Yes, it's a change. They've changed the focus of their sound and interpreted some weird new influences. Seems another band I listen to does that all the time... starts with an "R" and rhymes with "Lush".... and nobody cuts on _them_ when they reinvent themselves. I therefore find the 'Ryche bashing somewhat hypocritical. "Saved" is the highlight of the album so far for me.

I already announced all the new CD information last post, so I won't repeat it here, but here are the current stati of each disc...

WDATU - I actually still have some more of these. That's preparation for ya. :) I knew it would be popular for awhile, I'm just glad I risked it.

SFAM - May very well be sold out by the time I get my held mail at home. There were only a few copies left of this Dream Theater boot when I left, and most have been reserved away. I'll let you all know.

Critical Mass - I ran out of standard issue CMs before I left, and still had a few prototypes to sell to the last few lucky people.

Precious Things - Like I said, it should ship when I get home. There are around 20 left to be reserved/paid.

The Darkest of Winters - To ship rather soon. I think this one is actually sold out up to the aforementioned 350 mark. I'll let you all know when i tally the week's mail.

Virtual Songs - We've got about 40 left. Shipping while PT + TDOW do.

Experience to Extremes - sold out. Yep, gone. If you have an unpaid reservation and you haven't already talked to me about it (some people run into tight funds at home, which is understandable, I just need to know that you still want it and haven't ditched me) then please do so soon.

That about covers things for now... not much else I can tell you. Oh yes, I had an interesting experience in Chicago yesterday. I took the train into town for the second time during the trip, since there isn't much to see in Elgin (where I stayed) or Schaumburg (where the Equinox office was). Anyway, I must first emphasize that I didn't look too much out of the ordinary, nor do I look particularly affluent. I'm not one of those dumb Arizona tourists that wears his cowboy hat and belt buckle on vacation. :) Still, the moment I got out of Union Station, the bums somehow converged on me like a wake of vultures. These guys are pros. They'll be putting stuff in your _pockets_ that you don't want or need, like postcards, flyers, and pamphlets, and then beg you for money with the look of someone who's just been robbed. I was completely unprepared for this because panhandling of any sort is illegal back home, and is actually enforced, so the only place the bums can beg is at freeway exits (which are state land, not city land). I can't remember ever taking my wallet out, but I'm lucky I didn't keep much cash on me, because it was empty in about ten seconds and was sitting there on the sidewalk. I had maybe $10-$12 in it, and I use my debit Visa to buy stuff. Anyway, I still had a good time in town, but that kinda had me on edge. I suppose those who live there know what to do to avoid it.

Well, that much being said, I leave you all to your regular album discussion, with a cryptic statement that you may puzzle over for some time: "The new Dream Theater album won't be anything like we think". I can't give any further info now, but you all will find out soon enough.

yes, but that's not my point. back when Poison *was* mainstream they=20 were roughly analagous to today's Pearl Jam (gee, i *never* thought i'd=20 say that...) the point is, it may be crap, but some people like it. =20 therefore, when you generalize and say "all grunge fans should be shot=20 dead" you're annoying some of us, and making yourself look like some high= =20 and mighty prick. besides, if you shoot some of us grungers, you'll be=20 depleting a bit of the DT fan base, and we simply *can't* have that, eh? := P

If I follow your latest tirade, you seem to be judging grunge on the basis of its widespread appeal to the masses. By your logic grunge is "crap" because it is widely appreciated and has claimed a huge following internationally. Yet you then go on to laud the virtues of Poison, citing that you were very into them at the height of their popularity. But according to your judgement of grunge on the basis of it's popularity, then Poison would be "crap" as well... ..are you even *thinking* at all about what you post, or does it just flow from you like an early-morning turd? Do you abitrarily dismiss a band based on it's widespread popularity? Let's hope DT never gets widespread airplay... you'd probably label them as "crap" too.

This album was from Chris to his good friend from MOther Love Bone whom Eddie replaced. It was an extremely personal project for Cornell. And I think Vedder is a good lyricist. Being a singer, I really concentrate on that, and it seems lyrics are an improtant part of prog music (as opposed to "Peaches", "Glycerine" or any handful of ridiculous atl. lyrics)."

I agree with you 100% Steve. Cornell is, IMHO, the best musician to come out of Seattle since Jimi. I only mentioned his Temple of the Dog project to further illustrate how prolific of a songwriter he is. His body of work contains some of the most powerful and scathing lyrics I've ever read. It's a shame that Cornell and Soundgarden are so often overlooked by prog fans because of their grunge appeal. Hell, Soundgarden was rocking me long before MTV rocketed Nirvana to undeserved fame. "Jesus Christ Pose" is still one of the rocking-est, most driving tunes I know. I just *gotta* head-bang when they kick into that amazing first drive before Cornell sings "And you stare at me... in your Jesus Christ pose!" Yeeeeessssss!

Hey everyone, I know awhile ago (a year maybe?), someone posted a list of concept albums. I was wondering if anyone still had that list, or could recommend some other great concept albums. I recently puchased Savatage's "Streets" and "Dead Winter Dead", and love them both, just as I do O:M. If anyone knows of any other bands with story-like albums that are really cool, please send me some mail. Thanks a lot! Chris

Imagine you go into McDonalds to buy a hamburger. You really look forward to eating it because the last one you got there was a little stale and cold to you. You excuse that one bad experience as "a bad day", and resolve to give them another chance. After all, their burgers were always good before. Sure, sometimes they had a little too much cheese for your liking, but you could deal with that.

You get it, take a bite, and it tastes terrible. You go to complain and the manager tells you:

"It's now made of 40% soy, 40% fillers, and 20% ground beef. We got kind of tired of making the same old burger."

Everyone else in the restaurant offers their opinions to you:

"Of course it doesn't taste the same, its 'progressed'."

"Don't eat it with the expectation that you should get the same burger you got the last time; instead, savor the differences."

"It'd be pretty damn boring if it tasted the same every time you came here."

"Don't judge it as the worst tasting hamburger you ever ate, judge it as the best tasting soyburger you ever ate."

"Don't be so quick to judge. Eat about 30 of them, you'll learn to like them."

"There's a lot of burgers out there that taste worse."

"Get with the times dude. Beef is so 80's. Soy is where its at now."

"There must be something wrong with your taste buds. It tastes plenty beefy to me."

"Sure, the meat tastes different. But, the ketchup, mustard, pickle, and onions still taste great."

"The new wrapper sure is neat to look at."

"Hey, maybe its a little different, but its still McDonalds."

"You were bitching that the last one you got here was too cold. Well, this one is hot."

I say: "Fuck you, I'm going to Burger King. I know what I like and this ain't it."

This is Yngwie. The first song is 'As Above So Below' from the Rising Force album, and the second is 'You Don't Remember I'll Never Forget' from the Trilogy LP. And I don't see how anything Yngwie or Jeff Scott Soto ever wrote could be less interesting than Pearl Jam lyrics.

A scanner/photshop doesn't make you an artist... I have seen some artists do some amazing things with tools like those, however. What ever happened to Roger Dean and Hipgnosis (yes, howe, asia, zep, floyd to name a few)? YES covers had some of the most imaginative stuff. Probably where that vehicle behind Hale-Bopp originaed from :)

Not my umbrella...although I sometimes have mine up when it isn't even raining out :) To me, I'm a Man in a Box is at least straight ahead Hard Rock if not Metal.

Rip pretty might summed up the way I view it as a description of how well (how tight) musicians play together rhythmically. I use it to when I hear a portion which is technically demanding pulled off and my head snaps in disbelief as I run for the rewind button :)

I think I'll leave the answer to "what makes one band tighter than another" for someone with a better flame suit than I :)

    > and use some examples?

Off the top (probably shouldn't say top, see below :) of my head:

In "Light Fuse and Get Away" after "can you remember feeling much too close?" ? All combinations of Mike Portnoy's limbs! Same for John Petrucci's fingers :) Aww, fuck it, I'm gonna punt: there's a section in just about every song they do...

Kansas - The intro to Paradox

Beginning of ELP's Tarkus Keith Emerson's left and right hands :)

Hope that didn't come off resembling a top <n> list. If so, please E-MAIL me. Save the folks on the list who already understand the game the trouble of having to read anymore about it than they have to. I understand the game but am a little sketchy in the grey areas :)

I'll grant you that knowing each other has a lot to do with it sometimes. I've seen certain jazz players, that have never played together, get up on stage and out of nowhere play as if they might have been praticing with the group for years. Didn't DT mention on the video how the Jay Beckenstein just got up there (yeah it was a studio situation, but he improved the thing, right?) and whipped that puppy out?

I think a lot of it also has to do with being an experienced musician and being able to recognize where a groove is headed. I suppose just about anyone can be tight in a studio setting given enough takes and an engineer with a keen ear. To see it pulled off live.

    > The fact that you like Dream Theater does NOT make you special, dammit.

Combine it with the other 9 things I like, though, and I AM special; and damnit.... people like me. Now isn't that special!

    Happy Eggster :)

The Portland show has still not been confirmed, and, with TicketMaster being as clueless as they are to such things, we probably won't know for a while. No word about the Seattle show either.

All jammers going to the Gorge show May 17th, let me know... we gotta organize something. :)
