    Hi all

it looks (and sounds) like the latest offering by Tiamat, 'A Deeper Kind Of
Slumber', has moved into my CD players on a permanent basis, only making place
for Symphony X when my girlfriend steals it. So to help me over my Tiamat-free
hours, does anybody know if there is a Tiamat mailing list anywhere? All help
    greatly appreciated.

    stay safe and happy listening

At that point I'd think they'd be more likely to start a headlining tour.
I remember seeing DT less than a month after Awake came out. I wouldn't
want to see them play such a shortened set. It's been 2.5 since they
played Detroit, and the wait for them to return is getting really annoying.

On Rockline Monday night, when the subject of opening bands was brought
up, a caller suggested Dream Theater to which Chris DeGarmo replied,
    "cool."

Yeah it would be cool but I still don't think there's much of a chance.
As far as a setlist, they said they'd play about half of the new one and
mix in some old stuff. I'd guess about half of the Promised Land and
Mindcrime stuff with some Empire thrown in too. Remember how they cut
back on Mindcrime on the last tour? I'd suspect them to the same with
    Promised Land.

ok, just finally obtained one today. woo haw. first thing i noticed was
strikingly resembling tracks to acoustic dreams. <grin> yep, all your
favorites from acoustic dreams are here.. though i'm afriad the quality isnt
QUITE up to par with good ol mike's AD, its definately good, and you
definately should peel your eyes if you want the acoustic stuff. what this
does include that you wont find AD is the cool chats and junk-arounds in
between songs :) this also includes probably the best version of Lost
Without You i've heard. its not the same as on Precious Things. to anyone
who can dig it up, ENJOY! =)

    *cow fact*cow fact*cow fact*cow fact*cow fact*cow fact*

originally, the disease smallpox posed quite a problem. evading it was
hopeless. but through observation, it was discovered milkmaids were immune
to this disease. why? they all suffered from cowpox. after your immune
system defeats this and the antibodys go kick some antigen ass and the
suppressor T cells calm you back to normal, you are immune. you are also
immune to smallpox after suffering cowpox. therefore, they started giving
people cowpox to vaccinate them from smallpox. the worls first vaccine.
    and the term vaccine comes from, you guessed it.. the latin word for cow;
vacca. so now everytime you hear that word, think of cows and how they
    rule. later :)

you folks who've been talking about magellan sound like "test of wills"
just came out yeserday (may 6th)........is that true?

because I've had the album since last thursday :)
picked it up in a used store.....but if it came out yesterday.....it
means.....WOW!!!!!! I had an album in my hands before the official release
date for the first time in my life! I feel so special :)

    superficial review: I liked it......but i'm still selling it......first
few songs, didn't really get into all that well, the vocals/production
just sorted sounded really *bland* or somewhat sterilized to me, esp. on
    "gameface".......

really liked the last half of the album though..........
preaching the converted and critic's carnival especially

Here's the thing that really struch me about "test of wills": the band
magellan reminds me, for some reason, of the band "Chicago" (peter cetera
and the gang, you remember them?).......and that is so totally not meant
as a flame, because i LIKED the song sin which i was reminded of
    chicago....

maybe it's the trombone, which adds an element usually never head in
prog.......in any case, the inclusion of the brass is pretty cool, and so
is test of wills as a whole......and i still can't believe i had an album
nearly a week before it was released!!!!!!!!!! damn, i may have to hold
on to it just because of that......

    where ya at, Jeff Keifling?

i once asked a friend of mine who studies something or other about diigtal recording.. and he said you cant put whatever you want.. but after 75 or so minutes the sound quality starts to decrease becasuse they have to compress sound more.. something like that.

Sorry for the blatant NDTC here, but I figured I should share this news with the list, because there's at least a few Yes fans here. I swear, there's DTC in this message, so don't automatically jam on that page down button. :)

    Straight from Yes Magazine:

"The Rick Wakeman Communication Center is reportedly announcing an official statement from Rick that he has indeed left Yes.

While saddened by this news, we are optimistic about Yes' future.

    More news to come."

I'm guessing that many are wondering who could be taking his place. There have been rumours kicked around that Geoff Downes (currently with Asia) and Pat Moraz (currently on a solo tour), both former members of Yes, have been contacted about taking Rick's place.

In other news, linking Yes with DT (told ya there'd be DTC) an MP3 file of The Yes Medley (with special guest Steve Howe) from the Ronnie Scott's gig has just been put up at http://yesoteric.southside.org/. While you're there, feel free to download other rare/bootleg Yes and Yes-related MP3s from the Yesoteric archive.

And for one more Yes-bit, a reply.

    ------------------------------

Hmm, why would Magellan be stabbing at Yes when they're fans and contributed their cover of "Don't Kill The Whale" to the Yes tribute album, Tales From Yesterday?

Anyway, if they're stabbing Yes, they're inadvertantly stabbing Rush, which they sampled at the beginning of the song. Rush were very influenced by Yes and it definitely shows from Geddy's growly Rickenbacker tone. Also, Ged has gone on record saying that Yes bassist, Chris Squire, was his earliest sonic influence.

Wow, I rambled far too long. I go now.

I'm responding to something that was mentioned about a week ago, because I just can't catch up on my jams w/finals around the corner.

When I listen to DT, I'm listening to emotion and power. Those things aren't mutually exclusive with lyrics, but a lot of the solos, in my opinion, are drawn out and barren of emotion. Sure, it's impressive. 20something notes a second, great, great. And I'm not being sarcastic. They're pretty cool, those solos. But they're also somewhat interchangable. The PERFECT example of this is Metropolis. Here you have this moving, powerful song, and all of a sudden, there's a 5 minute talent exhibition right in the middle. Why? Put it on a demo tape or something, and replace the space with more substance.

I don't want the solo extinct, it has it's place, *but*. It gets so I just end up tuning out the song.

And I'll tell ya, if there's gonna be any exposure for the new album, you can look forward to those solo-less radio versions. I just hope there's still plenty of song left when the butchers, um, editors, are done.
