Yes, I have this album... it's sorta progressive at times, but it's mostly
power metal... It's War is an awesome headbanging song...

Just a quick interjection then back to quietly observing. I have seen lots of comments on other prog bands and the like and generally speaking the comments all center around the playing and technical aspects. But to my ears the real defining aspect of DT's music is that it is brimming over with really memorable melody. That is a real rarity these days trust me. I manage a music superstore so I hear just about everything. A musician can be taught but a tunesmith is born. Simple as that. Blaine

So sorry again for all the inconvenience caused, especially to those who have not heard from me before. I will be using another e-mail package from now on which I gather is more reliable.

This is the kind of statement that bugs me, since it brings a bit of doubt into my own writings. Alot of the stuff I write comes from my head, but I don't have the skill to just sit down on a guitar or keyboard and just spout it out. It seems alot of the stuff I write stems from chance or luck. I might just sit down and noodle for a bit and then discover an awesome riff or a perfect bridge to fill a gap in a song I'm writing. I've often wondered what other people's approaches to songwriting are, because mine seems to come from mindless noodling, I'm interested in hearing how other people write since it may be a good technique for me to follow.

I know, I know, I still need to hit those theory books a little harder. :) I'm getting there, but there's gotta be more to it than chord formations... :)

Last week on ESPN, Dan Patrick was mentioning Geddy Lee of Rush meeting Randy Johnson of the Mariners when they were playing in Toronto. Dan also mentioned that 2112 was his favorite album. Today I was reading a transcript of a chat session with Dan and someone asked him if he was serious about 2112 being his favorite album. He said that he owns five Rush albums and has gone to three concerts. 2112 is his favorite album and he only has it on vinyl. This was too cool not to mention...

About FW's new album, a note first. Before this album, the only one that I have heard is 'Parallels' and I don't like that album at all. Every time I listen to it, it still sounds like a bad QR clone. I bought the new FW anyway, mainly because of Kevin Moore being on the album and a 55 minute song is cool.

I have made sure that I have listened to the CD many times before I wrote this to make sure I got the right view of this and didn't go off half cocked like a lot of people have. There is a lot of good stuff on this CD. Kevin Moore makes a difference here. Even though he isn't as up front as he was in DT, he is very effective here. I don't know if they would have gotten the right sound without him. I am still not impressed with Ray Alder. He sometimes seems to go a different direction than the band. Actually, he reminds me of Charlie Dominici. Generally, he is OK, but not great. I like parts VI and IX, but I think this album needed to be "cooked" a little more before it is done. I will be keeping this one, though.

Well, now seems as good a time as any to post a review of what I've heard of the new album, which is, ahem, all of it. I will go track by track (I took notes).

Trust: Kind of in the Elysian Fields, Angry Again vain, with a cool accoustic classical guitar part in the middle. Starts with a drum intro then builds into the main riff. Very cool.

Almost Honest: Once again, an Angry Again type song, but a little faster, goos song too.

Use The man (Mustaine must have remembered my e-mail name in the diner :)) Starts with some 60s song in the background (like Set The World A Fire) seemingly called Needles and Pins. Accoustic intro, heavy chorus (this is yet another in the seemingly endless supply of drug songs _I've seen the Man use the Needle, Seen the needle use the man, etc). gets fast at the end, reminds me of In My Darkest Hour's ending.

Mastermind: Sounds like older Megadeth, with the Bass intro and all, riff sounds a little like mouth for War, could fit on Peace Sells. Cool riff.

The Disintegrators: Very fast and Heavy, a sister song to just about anything on Rust in Peace - Nuff said.

I'll Get Even: This is the song with the surf type chords in the intro. Maybe the least heavy musically, but you can feel his anger in his voice. Has a cool bridge with almost Beatlesque Chords (see Taxman).

Sin: Another in the Elysian Fields, Angry Again vain, hey of it ain't broke...

A Secret Place _ I happen to like this one. Cool use of a corel sitar on the riff as in GNR's Pretty tied Up. So it's radio friendly, big deal.

Have Cool, Will Travel _ Megadeth is bluesy mode for the first time since I Ain't Superstitious. Has some cool harmonica stuff on it.

She Wolf: Intro riff similar to main riff in Disposable Heroes (repeated muted open lower E string). Cool song, very fast.

Vortex: Cool riff, fast once again.

FFF: Sounds a LOT like Motorbreath, if you like that, you'll like this.

Differences between this album and the last album - no really slow stuff (ie Tout Le Monde - which I also like), similarities - many songs like Elysian Fields tempo.

Biggest difference, return of faster stuff.

Overall: 9 I think it kicks a great deal of ass.

Dave - Looking forward to June 17.

I wouldn't be surprised if they would. Frankly it is kind of cool that crowds over here always like to clap to rythmns (sp?) and chant and such. It is hard to get crowds in America to do that unless you really lead them on *grin*.

Hello, Well, after cracking the top ten MFPs last month, I decided to take the first week of this month off. But I'm back! Before continuing, I must tell you the people at the NJSEA got back to me and said they were the "racetrack" people, not the "stadium" people. They kindly gave me a mailing address for the latter, but no e-mail, so I have revised my sig. Also: if anyone finds thenself with an extra Queensryche or Rush ticket for PNC, Camden, or Jones Beach let me know. I will be happy to take it off your hands at a reasonable price. Emphasis on reasonable. ALBUM OF THE MONTH: All you fans of ambient guitar, go out and get Pat Metheny's latest "Beyond the Missouri Sky". It's IMHO his best since Secret Story. It's a beautiful duet album with him on acoustic and Charlie Haden on bass. Great for reading along with. Not jams, books. You all remember those, with the paper and ink...:) Thanks to all for the KTS info. Hopefully my boots are on the way at the right price! I may just have to order a few more...:) Anyone up for doing some trades, I'm just starting out, so let me know! Two weeks until Prunella Scales! Only another month until Megadeth! I was reading the Aquarian (yes, I can read), which has a pretty cool interview with Rollins, and I was looking at the "CMJ (?) Hard Rock Charts" or something like that.... Debuting at #9.........APSoG.......very cool to see a prog band up there (QR I think may have been there as well) in a mag filled with more alternative-type/indie/punk stuff...

Another funny thing I saw was an ad looking for a guitarist. It went something like - looking for a guitarist in the vein of blah, blah, blah....WE ARE NOT A QUEENSRYCHE, DREAM THEATRE BAND< SO DON'T EVEN BOTHER!........no shredders............. pretty funny stuff...........

Another note for people who may be interested......Drain STH, those Swedish chicks who kick some serious nadz, are going to be at Club Bene TONIGHT in Sayreville, NJ......they're opening for Sister Machine Gun, who played at my alma mater two weekends ago (and were pretty damn boring)....... I always find out about these shows too late........:(

    > ummm, maybe they threw that song by that other Superior on there?

Bernd already said there's no extra song on any Superior album. They'd have to record it before they could sneak it on a special edition release of the cd. APSoG (Ass Pog!) isn't the kind of album that would benefit from an extra song, unless they added a movement to the song or something. I doubt this exists, and we've heard from no one who's seen or heard any 13th song on this album. You'd think that if someone found that, by now they'd be flipping out and raving about it on the jam. Just my 2 pesos.

Go suck goat. Take off clothes, dance for Skadz. Beg, plead. Then maybe we take you off mailing list. SSSSSSsssssuffer. :)

Wouldn't it be neat if the entire jam got together and retaliated for these annoying posts by having each jammer send an e-mail to the offender with the unsubscription information? 900+ of them? I think that'd be humorous, anyways... but I'm a tad juvenile...

Well, I think you're missing the point if that's what you think about those winding musical passages. If you can't appreciate them as part of the song, and consider them to be a "Talent Exhibition" then perhaps it's just not the thing for you. When I listen to those parts, it's clear to me that it's not just a shredfest, or guitar wank-off. I think it takes some realistic degree of exposure to that kind overdone guitar shred before one can really tell the difference. For the rest of our sakes, I certainly hope DT continues to make lots of cds that have long parts that you will contintue to have to fast forward through. :) > From: Michael Kizer <mkizer@goodnet.com> > Subject: Angra / Symphony X

Well, I have already replied to Edward personally, but I think that more of you would like to know: if you like Angra, maybe you should hear the previous work done by Andre' Matos's with his former band Viper. It is along the same lines as Angels Cry (melodic heavy metal) and the CD "Theatre of Fate" is simply incredible. I don't think it is easy to find out there in the US, since it is hard to find even here in Brazil, but if you'd like to hear, I'd like to set up a trade for any Dream Theater material.
