The "official" running time of an audio CD is 74 minutes. In this
condition, your CD is recorded 44 kHz, stereo and I think 16 bit per
sampling. With more that 74 minutes, you have to cut in very high
    frequency or in undesired noise.

Concerning Rush, I want to know if some people will be at the Montreal
show. Anyway, I'm in the fourth row, with maybe a DT T-shirt.
You surely hear me when they'll play Natural Science...

    Hey guys,

Just got the new Guitar World catalog and it has the RG 7string for $999 with a list price of $1299, not much better than just buying a used Universe. A Universe will also get you the cooler finish and Dimarzio pickups...

At 10:15 AM 5/8/97 -0700, so let it be written, so let it be done: >Trust: Kind of in the Elysian Fields, Angry Again vain, with a cool >accoustic classical guitar part in the middle. Starts with a drum intro >then builds into the main riff. Very cool.

Anyone notice that the drum parts to this song are exactly like Enter Sandman?! My drummer and I were in the car last night when "Trust" came on the radio, and he pointed it out to me. Same 2 or 3 tom riff in the beginning and the verse drum riff is also identical to the ES verse drum riff. Maybe Nick decided that if it worked sooo well for Lars' career........Jus' an observation. :)

Peace and love and good happiness stuff,

I have the Mercury Rising cd, and I would compare it to Toxik at times, especially vocally. He also sounds a little bit like Bruce Dickinson on the first song or two, but Toxik keeps coming back to me....if you are expecting Dream Theater II or any super prog effort like that; forget it. It's mostly fairly technical metal.

The mercury sure is rising on those "mighty" ducks....

Cd Running Times- the longest CD I've ever had was 77:37. Wish they could make 90 minute CDs without losing sound quality- ah, well.

Well, when the recordable DVD decks come out you'll be able to record your own CD's and thy'll fit up to :140 plus the sound is better than CD anyway. The drawback is that it's a different system than regular CD so you won't be able to listen to them on your discman or in the car, but at home it'll be awesome.

I got _Precious Things_ today. I didn't know I was among "the most dedicated Dream Theater fans in the world." I think I got kicked off the Kiss list today. The reason (get ready for this): my postal address is in my signature file. They were afraid I would get mail bombed and someone would sue the list owner. Now Skadberg has a good excuse to get rid of me. The only problem would be the vacancy of the YtseAsshole of the Month/Year/Millenium post. Now, if Mr. Skadberg removes me from the list, be sure not to send a mail bomb to the address below. I won't even be there anymore, but Boston University might sue your list owner. You wouldn't want that, would you?

    Hey Jammerz -

Sorry for my third post tonite (a new record for me!) but I was just sitting here thinking about Fates. When the Jam was loaded with APSoG praises, a few of you asked what would be the best CD to start your Fates collection with. Many mentioned "Perfect Symmetry"... some mentioned others. I feel that every album, from their classic "Night On Brocken" to their load-blowing "APSoG", are each masterpieces in their own right. IMHO, EVERY album should be purchased eventually! :-)

But, I think that if anyone were to start with a Fates CD, start with their compilation: "Chasing Time". Not many people mentioned to start with this, but I think that the band's style has changed pretty dramatically over the years. Some people would prefer the older, heavier stuff, while others would prefer the newer, proggier (is that a word?) stuff. The compilation would give the novice listener a decent taste of Fates at every stage in their career, and they can choose which album to get after that. I think that the selected cuts on "Chasing Time" do a fairly decent job in representing the tone and sound of each album. Of course, many noteworthy tracks simply could not be included due to time constraints (kinda hard to put a 23 minute epic on a single CD compilation, eh?), but the beauty of this disc is that it's not totally a "Greatest Hits" per se, but rather a nice collection of the "staples" along with some great rarely heard (by non-fans, at least) nuggets.

In conclusion, I would like to stress STRONGLY that each album is required listening. The compilation should just let you prioritize them. :-)

Much love to all... Matt T.

Gotta go celebrate... the Rangers just beat the Devils to go up 3 games to 1!

Well, from what I have heard, the sound will be compressed (with losses) and this means that the sound can be worse than the CD sound. But other factors such as frequency of samples could be much higher (I have heard things such as 96kHz) that they will avoid hiss and so on.

But the video DVDs will definitely be lossy compressed.

Well, I have also heard that portable DVDs will also be available pretty soon. And will play regular CDs.

Well, have you heard an MP3 file? They are lossy compressed. Minidiscs use compression too (and Sony actually admits that MDs have poorer sound quality than CDs, for instance, since it uses 5:1 compression, opposed to the dead DCC, that used 4:1). I have not heard what a MD and what a DCC sound like, but I have heard compressed sounds (do you know that the majority of our CDs pass thru a compression of dynamic range? this means that the very, very soft sounds are cut and the very, very loud sounds have their volume lowered).

    > >But the video DVDs will definitely be lossy compressed. > > Excuse my ignorance, does this mean the video is worse? Because

It depends on the compression rate that they will use. As I said earlier, just saying that something is lossy compressed don't mean that it will necessarily be worse. Just see an JPEG picture compressed with different levels of compression: you'll note some pixelization (excuse my poor English, but I don't know the correct word). Oh, and those MPEG animations use lossy compression too. :-(

    > that I know isn't accurate because the quality of a DVD even surpasses > a Laserdisc.

    I have heard this too.

If I'm not mistaken Toshiba sells the specifications of the DVD standards and they have already manufactured some prototypes of DVD-video machines. They have put a FAQ at their site (I think I have put a link in my homepage: http://www.ime.usp.br/~rbrito/bookmarks.html).

Just to add some Dream Theater Content, do any of you know where to find MP3 files with the new songs? I'm dying to hear to them.

    Thanks in advance, Roger...

I have a buddy who works at an HMV here, and I asked him about 3 or 4 months ago when the new DT disc was due out. After he spoke to the Warner rep, he told me the album was due in summer of this year. Upon asking again, he and I have now learned, according to the local Warner rep, that it probably won't be out until at least December and possibly into early 1998. January or maybe even February, to be specific. And, at the time I found out, the band had yet to begin laying down tracks. Needless to say, I was appalled. Not with DT, but with their label, when I learned they were behind the delay. Sorry if this is old news to anyone. I've been out of the loop for a while, having just re-joined the list after a lengthy abscence. I still can't believe the delay. However, knowing Dream Theater, the wait will be worth it. We won't be disappointed. Eric

BTW...any Savatage, DT or Randy Rhoads fans - please send e-mail.
