Secondly, while it's true I've almost finished tramscribing ACOS, I'm not glad I dropped out, it was incredibly difficult. <Techrat had a field day, by the looks of things...just another day for him getting me in shit on the net.> I used to be on the list when I was on Compuserve, till I moved to Australia. I was forced to drop out of the list and close my account. As far as the "ACOS transcription" goes, it was a group of us <I believe a guy named Brandon headed it up> who were going to transcribe ACOS. I was like 2nd or 3rd on the list.

This is my answer, take it or leave it. I wanted to end this thread before it got out of hand, especially since none of it was my fault.

Sorry to bore anyone...let's get back to the heart of the matter, DT. Who, next to Savatage, are one of the best bands around, imho.

This "wow" factor is a big factor in my decision on whether or not to buy a CD. I'm a pretty big drumming freak, and sort of a bass one too. When I buy a CD, I'm lookin' for some chops, man. I wanna hear shit that makes me wish I had a drumset of my own so I could figure out how the drummer pulled that trick off and repeat it for myself ad nauseum:). I wanna hear phrasing and fills that are so out-of-this-world and original that I am moved to say "Holy shit! That was an awesome choice of <fill, phrasing, whatever>! Lemme play that again!" I wanna hear rhythm tricks that sound so slick they literally send chills up and down my back. I wanna hear the drummer play 20 different phrasings over a single guitar riff. This is what I'm looking for in my music. > > This "feeling", which is whole point of music, waxes and wanes throughout > the metropolis solo. One part in particular, right after the bass solo, comes > to mind. This part does not seem to have a point. It could be erased from > the song and I wouldn't care. I certainly would. I happen to love it when a band goes into these extended instrumental interludes that take 'em into some weird tangent where they just tear shit up. Yeah, you're right in that that particular part pretty much came out of nowhere. That's one of the things I love about it. I think more songs need to be composed like this, instead of sticking to one basic theme all the time. Sticking to one theme is all right, but a lot of times it sounds to me like the band is beating a dead horse. I don't mean DT in particular, I'm really thinking of other bands when I say this, but for DT, the one song that comes to mind where they do this is Voices. I mean, I like long songs and all, but I think they should be done more in the style of Metropolis and LtL, with all sorts of melodies, solos, and riffs thrown into the mix.

    > There is much less of this on Awake. My favorite song is Voices, which, while > very long and winding, is also very consistent, emotionally powerful, and > *tight*. *And* it shows off their technical ability, which is also great. That's really what put me off about Awake. What you call "consistent" sounds kinda dull to me. I mean, a lot of jazz fusion bands don't bother sticking to a single theme with this kind of rigor and instead go for a more free-for-all, anything-goes composing style, where they can just take several melodies or riffs or whatever, stick 'em together, and still make the whole song sound cohesive. Having these kinds of changes in the song only makes the song more interesting IMO. This is also why I rate WDADU higher than Awake. WDADU had a lot more of this "musical rambling", as I like to call it, especially OaMoT (my fave track off that CD).

I finally did listen to the new TNT and I love it. I don't hear "alternative" at all. "Alternative" is such an overused phase anyway. "Firefly" is not "Tell No Tales" but if was, it'd sound dated. This is just a 90's metal record and it rocks. The title track is heavy. And as for Tony's voice...sounds all there to me. Geoff Tate on the other hand... :)

well, based on the experience i had with my 550, i'd rather shoot my pickups. i guess first of all it doesn't help that either ibanez or sam's asshole decided to switch the pickup into a duncan jb pickup (makes no sense, i know). it doesn't help that the neck and bridge pickups just basically fried on me. eventually when i got what i considered "real pickups", i told the stock ones to go fuck themselves and made them history,

the essential question is NOT whether you have a universe or not. if you smell my mother's panties, NOW we're talking....

ok, now for other shit, here goes:

    a) i'm trying to sell a guitar. i'm trying to sell an ibanez js6 guitar (satriani model). this is the one that has the all wood finish and no whammy. mahogany body, rosewood neck, maple fingerboard. fred and paf pro pickups with a coil splitting and tone filter option (via push pull volume and tone knobs). serial # 2649 (for those who care). it's a REAL warm tone, and it just feels good to play. if anyone's interested, plese email me and we'll talk. depending on the situation, i may be able to hand deliver it to you in the coming month or 2.

    b) so yeah, yeah, i've bitching about this x-country trip (the ytsegoon american tour), and looking for advice for places to check out (mad props to the boys and girls who've told me about places like milwaukee, sf, and seattle). if anyone knows a good place to check out, stay (as in motel or shacking or whatever), or whatever, email me privately. i'm most likely going to box myself out of this mailing list while i'm gone, so private, please.

    a-ight, peace out bitches.

ytsegoon (i smell your panties and i LIKE it)

Then you ARE saying that it's got wanking elements, is somewhat disjointed, and exists, at least somewhat, to "wow" someone, right? Then I guess I could just repost the last response I had... but that would serve little purpose. As a listener and someone who buys all of the wank shred albums, just to hear some new techniques that I havem't tried yet, I can feel pretty informed when I say that I think this fits with the mood of the song. I think the middle section of Metropolis is a perfect tension builder. That kind of thing is a classic element of progressive music. The instrumental section of the song is well written, and I think it adds to the song. I think the majority of the people on this list would agree (that's not necessarily saying much, since this is a DT list) But if you don't really appreciate that section, that's cool.

    >This "feeling", which is whole point of music, waxes and wanes throughout >the metropolis solo. One part in particular, right after the bass solo, comes >to mind. This part does not seem to have a point.

I think that's entirely in the eye of the beholder. Can we be content to just simply agree that we're not going to agree on this one? You don't listen to music in the same way that I do, so I don't think you can draw the same value out of some things that I find to be beautiful.

    >It could be erased from the song and I wouldn't care.

But I would. And most of the people on this list would.

    >Another great example is a lot of the stuff in Under A Glass Moon. And >that reminds me of my other defining element for this sort of demonstrative >playing: In both songs, there's solos that are generically similar, not >really relating to the song they're in. It's got this "insert generic DT >riff here" sound to it.

Okay, I really have to say it here. Are you a musician? The two solos are NOT alike. Technically and musically, they are different. The solo in Under a Glass Moon happens to be one of the most fiery and powerful solos played in the last five years. I think, and you may try to correct me, that it would seem that you just don't enjoy complicated guitar solos?

Last time I checked, my guitar had 6 strings, and my 7 string had 7... so there's one more string. The string is usually a low B, by default, but you can tune up or down a few steps comfortably. Some guitarists (Uli Jon Roth, for instance) puts a high A string on his guitar. This isn't as nifty on a Universe as it is on a guitar that's made for this. The guitars typically cost more. The low B string costs more than your average guitar string sometimes, because it's a thinker string. But it's a difference of $1 vs. $1.60. Not a big thing to cry over.

I have a feeling that Fates Warning will start a revolution in the music scene. Finally, Progressive music will be known around the world. I went to HMV in Canada, and guess how many APSOG cds were on display. Over 50! that's right 50! Now all FW need is a video for a song like PART 2, or PART 7. These songs would definately give them airplay. So in a few months when FW are well-known, people are gonna want to hear similar types of bands. That's when they'll get a dose of the new DREAM THEATER, and the music scene will never be the same again!

The rest of '97 should be a good year. '98 will be even better!

    Hello All,

I've decided to liquidate my boot CD collection (all are in excellent condition), and I think I've got some choice material to offer. Here's how I'll do it. Below are the CD's I have along with the minimum bid I'd like to get for each one. I'll take bids for a couple of days on this first round and then I'll post the highest bids on the Ytsejam again. I'll then let the bids go another round or so (if anyone's interested) before I sell. It seems like the fairest way to me if it's to be a genuine auction. So here they are:

06/29/93 "Lords of Sound", Milwaukee, WI - SB, A (2CD) (min $45) ---------- 03/04/93 "The Dance of Eternity", Limelight, NY, NY - SB(?), A (2CD) (min $45) ---------- 01/24/95 "Mind Control", Japan - SB, A (2CD) (min $45) (Includes 2 acoustic bonus tracks Tears/Silent Man) ---------- "Antiquities" (CD), Various tracks/sources Yep, this one's the real deal. An original copy from the Bahr project. I repeat...this is NOT a CD-R copy. (min $35) ---------- "Acoustic Dreams" (CD) This one is a CD-R copy produced by James Colberg. There are no gaps between songs and the copy is a first rate job. Next best thing to an original. (min $15)

There you have it. Some great DT material! Please check the DT website boot link (http://www.columbia.edu/~jc309/archives/ginfo/boots.html) or the Mike Bahr page (http://www.goodnet.com/~durnik/catalog.html) for boot information before asking me for it. It's all at those two sites. Thanks, and looking forward to auctioning these off.
