As of now all I have is VHS, but I insist on only buying leterboxed
editions. Those THX Widescreen editions of True Lies, The Abyss, etc.
were a Godsend! And Bridge on the River Kwai should ONLY be shown in
widescreen, same with Far And Away and Mission: Impossible and on and
on. NO movie should ever be subjected to Pan and Scan.

    >So far the cheapest deck I could find for what I want (DVD/CD/LD)

Yep, those multi-disc players will kill your wallet! I only plan on
using it for DVD and CD though, and ALL DVD players are equipped to read
    CDs.

    >As far as DVD is concerned. It is already available to consumers in
    >the US I believe. Good luck finding it.

Any electronics store should have them by now in the US. The demand is
incredible though, at least here in Jersey...

    >Everything about it is still up in the air, which is why it
    >hasn't come around full swing yet. The technology for this has been >around for decades,

Actually, the technology has only been around for the last four years.
There was a competition in the industry to decide whether two-sided or
double layered discs would be the standard, that's why it took so long
to get to the market. The industry wanted to avoid another VHS/Beta
    problem.

    >As far as I know- the audio end of the DVD (vs. the video market) has >not yet come up with a standard for the audio.

The record companies are not going to buy into DVD as long as DVD
players can play CDs. Why change gears when the technology isn't
    obsolete?

    >The spacing between data lines (the stripe-looking things on CDs)

Actually, they're called pits, but who wants to get technical...:)

    >Quit sending me all this shit. I do not care. Leave me alone.

Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me. If anyone wants to mail-bomb
this jerk mailto:<bpick@sunset.backbone.olemiss.edu> I doubt I'll be the
    first.

Ah, you don't know what you're talking about. I've been recording on my Tascam Porta03 for almost 6 weeks now, and I've NEVER had to use my Boss Compression pedal. Anyone hear about this new video type called BETA? I hear it's supposed to be even BETTER than DVD!

i'm totally into widescreening too. pan and scan is annoying as shit. whats more annoying is i have parents that hate letterbox and only want P&S. its crazy, i remember a long ass time ago when last of the mohekans <sp> came out on video in 'box and my dad was all pissy about it. they're just mad cuz their full tv screen aint occupied :)

A new priest at his first mass was so nervous he could hardly speak.

After mass he asked the monsignor how he had done.

The monsignor replied, "When I am worried about getting nervous on the

pulpit, I put a glass of vodka next to the water glass. If I start to

    get

    nervous, I take a sip."

So next Sunday he took the monsignors advice. At the beginning of the

sermon, he got nervous and took a drink. He proceeded to talk up a

    storm.

Upon his return to his office after mass, he found the following note on

    the door:

    1. Sip the Vodka, don't gulp.

    2. There are 10 commandments, not 12.

    3. There are 12 disciples, not 10.

    4. Jesus was consecrated, not constipated.

    5. Jacob wagered his donkey, he did not bet his ass.

    6. We do not refer to Jesus Christ as the late J.C.

    7. The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are not referred to as Daddy, Junior

    and the Spook.

    8. David slew Goliath, he did not kick the shit out of him.

    9. When David was hit by a rock and knocked off his donkey, don't say he

    was stoned off his ass.

    10. We do not refer to the cross as the "Big T"

    11. When Jesus broke the bread at the Last Supper he said, "Take this

    and

eat it for it is my body." He did not say "Eat me."

    12. The Virgin Mary is not called "Mary with the Cherry."

    13. The recommended grace before a meal is not: Rub-A-Dub-Dub thanks for

    the grub, yeah God.

    14. Next Sunday there will be a taffy pulling contest at St. Peter's,

    not

a peter pulling contest at St. Taffy's.

The origination of this letter is unknown, but it brings good luck to

everyone who passes it on. The one who breaks the chain will have bad

luck. Do not keep this letter. Do not send money. Just forward it to

    five

    of your

friends to whom you wish good luck. You will see that something good

happens to you four days from now if the chain is not broken. You will

    receive good

    luck in four days.

    Sincerely,

    DTFreak

he *big* show part one is Sat Night in Fremont. I called last night and the recording said that they open the doors at 8:00 pm. So, if anyone that's going would like to meet up early and get something to eat or get really fucking toasted or something give me an email and we'll arrange something. I'm really looking forward to meeting up with some jammers.

DVD currently uses MPEG 2 compression for digital video/audio. This format is better than ANY analog format including Laser Disc. MPEG 2 is a perceptual encoding method which means it is lossy compression based on reduced bit streams, not data compression. This is the biggest misconception, perceptual compression is not data compression but bit stream reduction.

MPEG 2 audio is NOT better than a CD. CD's are recorded in 44.1khz PCM method and are the standard bearer of full digital audio. MPEG Layer 3 audio compression is currently the best compressed digital audio method.

The format of DVD is whole other story...

i think the best analogy to this is laserdisc. anyone who bought one is shat out in some ways, because i think DVDs are going to take over like CDs took over tapes.. come on! DVD movies are 19 BUCKS! Laserdiscs are fucking 50-100! no one wants that! i'm ready to grab me a DVD rental from blockbuster and check this thing out. =)

Yeah, like I wanna go. :) I heard something about them having an easter egg hunt in Boise for backstage passes and front row tickets, though. 'Twas rather kewl. I guess the "egg" was actually a tie-dyed Volkswagen hippie-van park across the street from the park everyone was searching the grounds for. Pretty funky egg. :)

But, I will be at the Salt Lake Rush concert May 20th! Boo yah! I'll have to pick up the new Enchant whilst I'm there.

You think this was meant as a joke?? You think I have nothing better to do than write bogus mail to one of my favorite bands mailing lists? You're wrong.

And you're also right, somewhat. I spoke to the Warner rep with my buddy at HMV today and he confirmed that DT will enter the studio sometime this month. <I guess the petition paid off...congrats to everyone who signed it>. The same guy who produced Aerosmith's <a band who should call it quits, btw> last album, Nine Lives, is at the helm. The release date now, in fact, has been pushed up to a September or October release. This info is quite accurate and very current.

i agree with adam cook about the price of the new 7 string. for that price (1299), you can find a decent used one, and if you're daring enough and/or talk a good talk with a guitar salesman, you can pull of a NEW universe for only $200 more. if these rg7's only have stock ibanez pickups, don't even bother. the stock pickups i had on my rg550 sucked fat moose penis. you want a guitar with dimarzios. i know you do.
