Well, that's your opinion. Some of us LIKE to listen to music that "wows"
us. To an extent of course (I don't like Yngwie all that much, because he
overdoes it, IMHO). I think Metropolis is the perfect mix, which is why
it's my second favourite DT song after LTL. And that's because LTL's
instrumental section is longer, and cooler. In fact, I think LTL would be
better if about 50% of the vocals had been cut out.
>This "feeling", which is whole point of music, waxes and wanes throughout
>the metropolis solo. One part in particular, right after the bass solo,
comes
>to mind. This part does not seem to have a point. It could be erased from
>the song and I wouldn't care.
So what in your opinion DOES have a point? Only the parts with vocals?
There are a couple of parts in the Metropolis instrumental section that I
don't *LIKE* that much, and perhaps there are a couple of spots where it
doesn't flow as well as it could, but I don't see those parts as having "no
point". Does the intro to Metropolis have any more of a point than the
part you're talking about? Not that I can detect.
If DT erased all the vocals from all their songs, and just wrote entire
albums that were like the Metropolis instrumental passage, I wouldn't care.
In fact, I'd love that. I think DT should do even more instrumental stuff
than they do now. If the music doesn't "fit" in a song, then just put a
couple of instrumentals on the album.
Not that there's anything wrong with James (he's great), but the other
members of the band don't get to showcase their immense talent to the same
extent when they're just accompanying the vocals. I think in I&W they
achieved the perfect balance.
>Another great example is a lot of the stuff in Under A Glass Moon. And
The only part of that song that I think is inappropriate is Mike's double
bass
machine-gun drumming. And that's not because it has "no point", just that
I think the song would sound better if he hadn't overdone it in a few places.
>There is much less of this on Awake. My favorite song is Voices, which,
while
>very long and winding, is also very consistent, emotionally powerful, and
>*tight*. *And* it shows off their technical ability, which is also great.
So I take it you belong to the camp of DT fans that prefer Awake to I&W?
If so, that's fine, but understand that not all people feel the same way
you do. There are just as many people who prefer I&W, and I would hazard a
guess that most of the people (myself included) who prefer I&W like I&W
because the album as a whole is a little more complex, more progressive,
and has more complex, technical instrumental sections.
Voices also happens to be one of my least favourite DT songs, probably for
many of the same reasons you like it. It's still a great song (anything by
DT rocks), but I happen to think it's about 3-4 minutes too long, and there
aren't enough cool instrumental parts to hold my attention the same way
other songs do. I actually don't like anything on Awake nearly as much as
I like LTL, TTT, or Metropolis.

Just a quick question on MP3 files. I created one that worx fine when
you FTP it, but when you try to get it through Netscape it just gives you
garbage. Other MP3 files start the viewer fine, but only ones that I
create will start downloading garbage. Anyone know how to fix that?
I've always enjoyed listening to Grip Inc. while playing ID's games.
Besides being perfect music for these games, it brings back memories of
playing Heretic (one). BTW are any other ytsejammers in Quake clans?

Mike,
Hey, Dude, I'm not COMPLETELY positive, but I'm pretty sure that the guitar
they have listed for $999.00 is NOT the Universe... it is the RG series
seven string that we have been talking about on the list for awhile. It
does come with stock DiMarzio's, but it is NOT the Universe. Like I said,
I could be wrong, maybe it's a different flyer that I got here in Houston,
but I'm fairly certain of this.

Well if this is true then you can't tell this from living in the South
Jersey, Philadelphia area.....When Promised Land came out I only hear I Am I
maybe once on the radio and Bridge maybe twice.....now with HITNF I can think
of at least two stations in the area that you can tune them in and within a
couple of hours hear something (not just SOTT) from this album...for those of
you in the area that don't know what I am talking about the stations are 94.1
WYSP (Excellent station by the way Stern in the morning and John DeBella in
the afternoon) and 100.7 in the Atlantic City area (not sure of the call
letters) so at least here in SJ and Phila. I'd say that Ryche is on the up
and up once again.

because my floyd rose goes slightly out of tune when I push it down, and
goes back in tune when I pull it up. Anybody know if that's what I need?

Just a quick review of the Spock's Beard show in Fremont, CA on 5/10.
It was a pretty cool show. Opener (Maximum Indifference) was nothing special
(good bassist, instrumental music), SB was pretty cool. Very different. The
band is more keyboard than guitar oriented. The guitarist has a very unusual
style, "picking" with his right index finger's fingernail, and also doing some
banjo-type rolls with his thumb and fingers. He wasn't bad, but don't expect
any lightning-quick runs. The drummer was pretty good. The lead singer
seemed very talented - A good singer, good keyboardist, and decent guitarist.
Some of the songs had really great melodies interspersed. I bought two discs
at the show, and I really love the song "The Light". "Thoughts" is pretty
interesting too. The live disc "The Official Live Bootleg" sounds fantastic,
and is a great representation of what they do live. I also like "Beware of
Darkness." In summary, the show is well worth the $8 or $10 you'll pay to see
them at a club. Check them out!!!
cheers,
-Neil.

Personally, I feel all Conklins are crap, but that's only my opinion.
I am a luthier who has a design for an 8-string on my drafting table and it
is near production stages. I expect my first prototype to be done in about
6-8 months. I've consulted with 3 other luthiers in regards to this and
they have all agreed that this design is workable with some refinements. I
got the idea from Michael Angelo's 7-string <Custom Charvel/Gibson w/high
A> and John Petrucci's 7-string <Custom Ibanez prototype 7 w/low B>.
JP Prototypes can be seen in his Warner Bros. / DCI instructional video
"Rock Discipline". If you are a guitarist and a DT fan and you haven't
heard about this video, you must have had you head in a hole for the last 3
years...GET THIS VIDEO!!! John's teachings are just incredible and even my
playing's improved 100 fold since I've used it.
BTW... Michael Angelo has a video available throught Metal Method called
Speed Kills. Mikey is the world's fastest guitarist, and he demonstrates
the techniques he used to achieve his mind warping speed. To paraphrase a
guitar magazine review - "His playing would be more accessible to the
general public if it was slowed down to within the range of say ... an
Yngwie Malmsteen."
Keep your dreams safe...

Although I probably wouldn't have put it so strongly, I agree with you.
I think LaBrie is the worst thing to happen to Dream Theater (next to
Kevin Moore leaving, that is). He has no stage presence at all, and he
sings so god-awfully that it detracts from the music. I much prefer
their original vocalist, Charlie Dominici. He had a great voice, one
that fit perfectly with Dream Theater's soaring, majestic sound.
I've seen DT three times since LaBrie joined the band, and I've wondered
what they see in him every time.
I think we should start a Dump LaBrie campaign!
