[I haven't been following the rest of the discussion, but I'll give my view
    anyway.]

I personally think that dumping LaBrie wouldn't be a wise thing for DT to
do. I haven't seen DT live yet (the concerts in the Netherlands last month
were sold out before I even knew about them), but especially on Awake I
think he performs brilliantly. When I compare him to Charlie, I think that
JLB has a much more versatile voice. JLB can sing both "rough" parts and
parts that require a clear voice; I am especially fond of his seamless
transitions to the high (falset) register, and his very good use of this
    register.

As I said, I haven't seen DT live yet, so I can't comment on JLB's live
performance. But as far as CDs are concerned, I prefer JLB above most
    other singers.

so i've been reading some bits regarding 7 stringed bits and pieces. here
    goes:

chris ptacek, you make me puke. not a bad thing. just all you guitar center
bastards make me wish i was in l.a. sometimes (guitar center IS in l.a.,
right, or am i thinking another one?)

i searched reeeeeeal long and hard for a 7. i too wanted a white one, but
came across the problem of them not being so available. i got verrrrrry hard
when the east coast music mall purported to have one for 1600 used. i would
have thrown the money down for it. however, their business practices lead me
to suspicion. they demanded that i thrown down half the money as a deposit (a
NON-REFUNDABLE deposit, no less). this is all BEFORE i even got to see the
guitar. naturally, i told them i'd be up in two days. to my surprise i got
"ohh, i'm so sorry- we just sold it. but we have this green and flourescent
    yellow one for 1999."

if anyone here has been following ibanez, i'm sure you remember this one.
it's the puke green, with those obnoxious flourescent yellow pickups (and for
a guy who owns a flourescent yellow GUITAR, they made ME sick) and the pink
switch knob. ooh, that did it. 1999 for that piece of crap? to hell with
    those cocksuckers.

i saved my soul when i found out that a well-known store in rochester had 5
new ones (black ones), so at $1500 (w/case), i think i got a break. they were
trying to make me drop 1700, but that just wouldn't do. although no, i didn't
get the "oiseau" award for the cheapest bought uni, the only thing that
matters is that I HAVE ONE.

i couldn't agree with you more about the stupidity of paying 1600 for used
ibanez. everything you said was absolutely true. great guitars, and save for
the fender squire i have, they're all i play. i think even 1600 new is a bit
crazy. i think maybe the only circumstance that would prompt me to pay that
much would be if it had something like gold hardware (not plated- 18 karat
gold), and maybe if someone like pamela anderson or whoever "practiced" upon
it, so to speak. yes, that was crude, and i'll take my 2 minute minor in a
minute. but even then, i don't think i'd ever do that.

the jb pickups can sound good. i assume they can be made to sound great,
even. and i wish i knew what whoever wired it did. but it just happened. one
power chord later, and something bad happened. i sounded like a sonic youth
album or something. like, the low and midrange was just GONE, and the pickup
just sounded like hitting glass with a rock. and the noise (for a humbucker,
    no less) was unbearable.

and i liked the sd's. i had a 59 on my neck for 5 years. but due to my good
experiences with dimarzios on other guitars, i just said fuck it and did a
little switch. now i'm running air nortons and steve's special (hmm.....i
wonder if that sounds familiar?) with an hs3.

    whatever.....

    7 string history-
hamer had one a few years back, too. i know the esp one was mentioned, but i
remember seeing an ad for a hamer 7 years ago (high a). wonder what happened
    toit?

and don't forget, all you 7 string bitches. go listen to some old george van
epps recordings, cause HE is indeed the 7 string daddy.

    peace out.

ytsegoon (i can smell them now)

Dude, you need a hearing test. I have some old bootlegs when charlie was
singing live and man, he sucked as a frontman and as a singer. I think
labrie definitly fits DTs style. Of course, most of this comes out of
the "when you started likeing dt" in which i start at the beginning of
the iaw era. so that's prolly why i'm more partial to labrie. later

Well, even though it's been nine years since O:M they've only had three albums, and PL was a horrible seller compared to the juggernaut that was Empire. I hope the new album sells well, I personally love it, but I think it's pretty much disappeared from the charts though. The Album, I mean, not the single.

I totally disagree with some of the negativtiy about JLB. I think he's progressed every album as a singer. A Change of Seasons is THE best progressive rock vocals I have ever heard. JLB has sounded weak live, but recently has gotten better live. It's gotta be hard to sing for DT. IMOH JLB has more raw singing talent than any other prog rock group by far. If you disagree E-mail me privately. C-ya

Hmmm...I musta been in the Rush veteran section for that show -- seemed like everyone was pretty well into the standard Rush traditions. I did see three of the shows -- at Hospitality Point (man...seeing Rush in a place that small was cool), Devore, and Shoreline. The latter two shows had the better performances, but the San Diego show was very cool, in a funky sort of way.

I dunno, but I did notice that they were on the flyers that they were giving out for upcoming shows in San Diego, so I guess they're passing through the general vicinity. Anyone else know the details?

A couple weeks ago one of my friends lent me an Atomic Opera CD, and oh man oh man, this is one great CD. It's called _For Madmen Only_, circa 1994. I searched through my past Ytsejams (I have 1000-2545 on disk, though I've been on here since around the 600s) and learned that they have only one CD and that it's outta print, it's really hard to find, and it's really sought-after.

So, that kinda bummed me, because I wanted to buy it. I went to CD Warehouse here in Irving, TX and lo and behold they had a promo copy. The case was all cracked and scratched up, and then I opened it up and the CD looked perfectly new.. no scratches, nothing. So I bought a new jewel case and now it looks like I have a brand new Atomic Opera CD (of course, with the gold print promo warning on the liner)

I heard from the friend that lent it to me that the singer and one of the guitarists are going to be putting out a new CD.. Does anybody have anymore info about them? There's jack on the web about these guys, and it's a pity, because it's one of the best CD buys in my collection. All I know really is that they're closely affiliated with King's X and Galactic Cowboys.

I thoroughly suggest looking out for this CD..

i like charlie more. in fact, the whole reason i dont like dt as much any more is because of james. will someone please kick his ass out? its not a joke. why? well.. he's always in canada, doesnt compliment the newer heavier music, gets caught pissing when he should be singing.. and with his voice change on awake he sounds like rob zombie's mom. albeit, he's great at his style, and he was good on I&W, but for the new dt i just dont feel he fits. i dont feel charlie would fit better but he was awesome on WDADU. and whats with james's gasping onstage? "hey <GASP!> out there <GASP!!!> Alright, <GASP> this one kicks <gasp> ass.. this is YTSE <GASP!!!!!> JAM!!!"

i normally would post something like, but i figured with as hostile as everyone gets over someone saying they dont like james, i'd send my warmest retorts.
