While reading through the June 1997 issue of Keyboard Magazine, specifically the Review section (JP-8000 review! hoo-ray, gonna get me one o those puppies!) There's a review of the Generalmusic Pro2 digital piano. Not a terribly favorable review, but here's the dtc:

    begin quote

And what did the panel of players have to say about the piano sound of the Pro2? Derek Sherinian of Dream Theater said, "The low end response is slow, but the high end is good. I like the action, it's got a loose feel. Overall, it's a good concept, but it's not quite there yet."

    end quote

Well, not much, true, but I told you that already.

the album, entitled "calling all stations" is due out september 2nd. as for the sound of it, don't worry. after listening to tony's last cd (strictly inc., which came out in 1995), it will DEFINATLY be progressive. not as progresive as Super's Ready, mind you, but it will be very progressive.

I've been observing for about 2 years now, (Maybe more, time flies when you're having sooo much fun). I have two things.

First a question. I have played guitar for about 23 years now and have never ever met a Dimarzio that I like. I had Super D's in an axe a few years ago and I currently have a JPM100P2 (Love the guitar) w/ an Air "Nothing" and a Steve's "Unspecial" and am about ready to switch to Duncan's unless someone can tell me how to get rid of all this squealing and feedback even at relatively low volume levels, (I can get twice the volume out of my current Duncan's w/o feedback). I really like the sounds I get but the feedback really sucks.

Secondly, James may sound a little rough live, but I don't see how anyone could nail all those parts perfectly night after night. As far as fitting with the band IMHO I feel he fits perfectly. No offense to C.D. but I can't even imagine him singing on I & W or Awake or ACOS. And I much prefer JLB on all the stuff I've heard him on from WDADU. I can say I really like Ray Alder on Fate's stuff and Geoff Tate is awesome on QR stuff but to me they all fit where they are. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I think we need to respect the opinion of the band and obviosly their opinion is they like James and they all deserve our continued support.

    Later

P.S. anyone with ideas on quieting my Dimarzios please E-mail me, Thanks.

My GOD!!! I can't believe all this ripping. I mean, power to the people for opinions for Christ's sake, but... I can't immagine not liking KJLB. I'm, of course, an az-player. before I got into it though, I heard DT. I love JP and his shredding, but I listen to DT at least half because of the amazing singing and what Kevin gave to them. I think Space Dye Vest is one of my favorite songs of all time and it's all Kevin and James. His voice gives me chills when he does that melisma on IF and when he sings Silent Man. And, on all of the live material I've heard, he nocks out any other singer I've heard, especially Tait, and including all others. Sorry. I really do respect oppinions, but I just can't fathom the amount of distaste for, IMHO, the awsomest rock singer to date. Be well. Matt B

Yes, I think that James LaBrie should be thrown out- forced to sing in Warrant and Dream Theater should recruit Axl Rose for vocals.

Seriously, though, I think James is a great singer (of course, I never have heard him live) but Images And Words and A Change Of Seasons was great. The reason, in my opinion, that Awake wasn't as great was because they took a more mainstream metal approach. I just can't hear the alternative in it like people say nor the White Zombie vocals. Listen to a Bush or Silverchair CD, then listen to Awake and I think you'll find it is not alternative.

    >all the parts are good there is no "commercial stuff" in there >no repeating chorus a la "innocent faded"

I think you mean "Innocence Faded", couple things here- first Innocence Faded was not a big commercial hit, most of the sheep in the world can't get into a song this far over their head- second, I think the chorus to Innocence Faded is amazing and the song is AWESOME!!!!

    >with an album like that is sure that is never be on radio station >most part of the song have no chorus like "a change of season" It's "A Change Of Season(s)" and if you are trying to say ACOS has commercial potential on the radio or anywhere else- you need to get half a clue.

Look, I like the new Fates too man, but it is not real cool to come into the Dream Theater group and bag on their songs, you know what I mean? You won't make a lot of friends, but- hey I do respect your right to express your opinion, however completely wrong it may be. Peace

    > everybody who likes real rock progressive music > not metal progressive music, have to buy that cd

Keep in mind folks, that this is only one opinion. Personally, I think APSoG is a fine album, but I would not call it a "masterpiece" or the best thing since I&W, the way some have. As I mentioned before, it certainly has some strong parts, but I think there are also several very weak parts.

I would suggest listening to the samples from this album that are up on various web sites before buying it if you're not a huge Fates fan who absolutely has to have the album. If you cream yourself when you hear the clips and have to have the album, then get it. I personally found the clips I heard to be the best stuff on the album, and I found when I listened to the rest of the album that there wasn't really much else there. But that's only my opinion.

The only reason I'm mentioning this, is that I've seen Jammers go crazy over some new band/album/whatever that happens to be a lot like DT. But many Jammers have gone out and bought the albums because of all the hype and been disappointed. On the other hand, a lot of people also discover great new bands after reading the recommendations of people on this list. I've discovered great bands like Fates (I happen to love the band, but APSoG didn't live up to the hype for me), Shadow Gallery, and so on because of this list. But I've also gone out and bought CDs by bands such as Ivanhoe and Echolyn that I later regretted buying.

So I hope people will realize that everyone has their own opinion so we don't get into flame wars every time one person goes crazy about a new album, and someone else comes on and says "I hate it".

    >all the parts are good there is no "commercial stuff" in there >no repeating chorus a la "innocent faded" >with an album like that is sure that is never be on radio station

True, but what does that have to do with whether it's a good album or not? I have to wonder if some people actually listen to progressive rock for the music, or just to be different.

Ok here's the deal.... let's compare using 'The Killing Hand'.

Here's JLB singing the last line:

"I am the killing HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND!!!!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAHHHH!!! YEAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!

he says it like he means it. It's a point. He *is* the Killing Hand. Case closed.

Now here's CD: "I am the killing haaaaaaaaaaand." "yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!" ok,he doesn't say "yay', but when you compare....

but anyways, it's more like "I know I'm saying I'm the killing hand, but that doesn't actually *mean* that I actually *am* the killing hand. I'm just singing what Mr. Petrucci here told me to sing . I didn't kill anyone in the valley, man, look over there; they're stiil alive! You must be confusing me w/ Another Hand, etc..."

    >>Just a quick review of the Spock's Beard show in Fremont, CA on 5/10...... >>........The drummer was pretty good.......

Ummm, Hellfuckinglo?? Sorry, but this I cannot let this go just like that. I was at the show too, and while the drummer was damn good- the rest of the band was amazing.

One of the best concerts I have been to in quite a while, they played for a good 2 hours or more and the music was excellent. The sound was astounding, especially considering the "venue". Highlights were the totally Squire influenced bass player, the keyboards, and the singer. The vocal harmonies of "June" were outstanding. The singer also plays a mean guitar and keyboards as well. He played some awesome spanish style licks to complement the lead guitarists echo drenched solos.

What sets Spocks Beard apart from many other bands is the songwriting, which is first rate. The tunes, while proggy as hell, also have hooks that run through your head for days and are not sappy commercial drivel.

Highly recommended- check them out. Beware of Darkness and the Light are two of the best prog cds I have heard in years.

Can someone send me some addresses of people that have put samples from this album? I'm really curious as many of you know it and I have never heard anything by Fates Warning. And could you recommend something by them (what are their best album)? Any comparison with Dream Theater? What style of songs do they play? Progressive Rock? Melodic Heavy Metal? Nothing that I have said?

Thanks in advance for any answer to this flood of questions, Roger...
