Since _The Princess Bride_ is my favorite movie of all time and DT is my
favorite band, I thought it would be fitting to write a little parody based
on both. If you've seen the movie, and liked it, you'll most likely recall
this one (of many) memorable scenes where Vizzini and the Dread Pirate
Roberts are engaged in a "battle of wits."
Vizzini: So, it is down to you and it is down to me. If you wish her dead,
by all means, keep moving forward.
Shred Pirate Roberts: Let me explain...
Vizzini: There's nothing to explain. You're trying to kidnap what I have
rightfully stolen.
Shred Pirte Roberts: Perhaps an arrangement can be reached?
Vizzini: There will be no arrangement, and you're killing her.
Shred Pirate Roberts: Well if there can be no arrangement, then we are at an
impasse.
Vizzini: I'm afraid so. I can't compete with your rhythm chops, and you're
no match for my lead playing.
Shred Pirate Roberts: You're that good?
Vizzini: Let me put it to you this way - have you ever heard of Jimi
Hendrix, Joe Satriani, Kirk Hammett?
Shred Pirte Roberts: Yes.
Vizzini: They suck.
Shred Pirate Roberts: Really? In that case, I challenge you to a battle of
soloing chops.
Vizzini: For the Princess? To the death? Very well, I accept.
Shred Pirate Roberts: Good. Then crank the gain. Listen to this solo.
Vizzini: I do not recognize that solo.
Shred Pirate Roberts: What you do not recognize is John Petrucci's solo from
"Under A Glass Moon." Tasteful, masterfully executed, and just plain kick-ass.
Vizzini: Hmmmm...
Shred Pirate Roberts: Allright. Play the solo back to me note for note and
up to tempo. The battle of soloing chops has begun. It ends when you play
it back, and find out who played it note for note, and who is dead.
Vizzini: But it's so simple. All I have to do is divine from what I know of
you. Are you the sort of player who relies on his knowledge of music
theory, or are you purely a feel player. Now, a clever man would study
ear-training, theory, composition, and practice his technique, because only
a great fool would attempt such a difficult solo without having done his
musical homework. I am not a great fool, so I must rely on my knowlege of
modes and scales, so I can clearly not play a solo based off a simple
pentatonic box pattern.
Shred Pirate Roberts: You've made your decision then?
Vizzini: Not remotely! Because John Petrucci studied at Berklee, as
everyone knows, Berklee is entirely peopled with serious musicians, and
serious musicians study their theory and ear-training. So I can clearly not
play just a bunch of random notes.
Shred Pirate Roberts: Truly, you have a formidable arsenal of shred licks.
Vizzini: Wait til I get going! Where was I?
Shred Pirate Roberts: Berklee.
Vizzini: Yes, Berklee. And you must have supsected that I know of Petrucci's
music education background, so I can clearly not play a purely diatonic lick.
Shred Pirate Roberts: You're just stalling now.
Vizzini: You'd like to think that, wouldn't you!?!? You've beaten my Swede,
so you must be trusting your sweep-picking to save you, so I can clearly not
play a pure alternate picking style. But you've also bested my jazz cat,
which means you have studied, and in studying, you would have learned to
play over changes instead of just wanking away in what you think the key
signature is, so I can clearly not just play in C# minor really fast!
Shred Pirate Roberts: You're trying to trick me into giving away something.
It won't work.
Vizzini: It has worked! You've given everything away! I know how to play
that solo!
Shred Pirate Roberts: Then switch to your lead channel and wail away.
Vizzini: I will, and here goes... What in the world can that be?

Vizzini: You only think I played it wrong! That's what's so funny! I put
_Images & Words_ in the CD player and cued up track 6 while your back was
turned. Ha ha! You fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders!
The most famous is never buy a Crate amp and hope for a good tone, but only
slightly less well-known is this: never go in against a Sicilian when death
is on the line! Hahahahahhhahhaahhahahahahahhahahahahahhahahaha.

To those Ytsejammers talking about PRONG, yes they are a decent band.
But from what I have heard back in November '96 and I believe to be the
truth is that after RUDE AWAKENING was released, the band had broken up.
And, the guitarist now plays for DANZIG. It's true, I was at a concert
here in Michigan that had DEEP PURPLE as the main act along with about 7
other bands (Gravity Kills, The Hunger, Danzig, Helmet, and a couple others).
Anyway, my friend had pointed out to me that the guy playing for DANZIG
was the guy from PRONG. We were hoping they would bust into Snap Your Fingers/
Snap Your Neck, but no dice.
This is what I have heard, feel free to investigate this....they may still
be around as a band, but I do believe PRONG is no more.

Prong has been dead for about a year now. One member (can't recal
which one) went to play for Danzig. I've been a fan of them for several
years and yes, thats where I got my name. Their old official web site is

James Rules. He has an excellent stage presence, but we would never
know that, because live all we ever do is watch all of the other superstars
on stage with him. They are all mezmerizing with the amount of command they
have over their own instruments and eachother. Feeding off of one another
like a school of pirahna. They are totally into what they do and we should
never knock James for not being good enough or not having enough stage
presence. He has to get his flesh and blood when he can. The others are the
big fish and he is just trying to keep up with them!

'kay, I just went through perusing all 174 new messages (90% from yous
guys), and here's my shit in a can:
I think DT SHOULD go on the road with QR. I don't wanna hear anybody
whining about how much superior DT is to QR and how sick it would be
(Metallica on the Ozzy ticket way back when, as case AND point). I'm
sure DT would be a bit cautious with thier set too. Do like Metallica,
pick a song, and play just that song (...ever dance with the devil in the
metal moon light?) Ah fuck. I just wanna see DT live. I've seen just
about everybody I've wanted to see live, EXCEPT DT. Methinks they have
an aversion to our west-coast water.
Rip rules. Hip hip ha-MOOO!
And get over the Chuckie incident. HE'S GONE! :) Besides, James kicks
ass with his voice...friggin'....man. I have videos, CD's, and pornos of
this guy's voice, and I guess it's just an acquired taste. Hell, I think
the same people that bitch about James being the weak link of the group
also hate Dave Mustaine's voice. Ohhh, Trust and A Secret Place KICK
ASS! I can't WAIT for the album and special home-town concert this summer!!!
Maybe you'd all stop bitchin' if he moved to the States. >;)
And for the floyd-rose thingie-ma-bop:
I don't think there's a floyd-rose out there that stays in perfect tune
when you smash your strings. I have a double locker on my RG470 (the
purple one), and once in a while I start goin' haywire with the whammy,
but it's all a matter of string tension.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinkin'. I've never heard (of) a guitar with a
whammy that's stayed in tune. Check out the Vai site, and look for his
techie page, where his techs give insight on how his guitars are set up.
I saw him go through like, 4 guitars on the G3 concert....on "little
Alligators" alone. I think the effect that those spring stoppers are
used for are to turn your floating trem into a fixed bridge. But what do
I know, I've only been jammin' for less than 2 years now ;).
Ack! I almost forgot...
I (accidentally...of course) left my And Justice CD in the 'puter when I
booted up Quake about a month ago...HOLY SHIT did that game go up in my
books! I've been testing some other ones, strictly metal, and here's
what my research proves as the most violence-inspriring Quake
soundtracks, in my own personal taste (of course):

Pretty much any Pantera CD (for some odd reason, it doesn't pick a track
for every level when I use Far Beyond...)

The Mechwarrior soundtracks KICK ASS! I definitely recommend playing
Quake to those at least once!

made it through the entire note, YOU RULE!
Rock on and don't let your DT CD's get all fucked up when you're trying
to put them in your tape player because you're so drunk that you can't
understand why it doesn't fit in your stereo anymore.

Prong parted ways last year, and Tommy Victor was playing guitar for
Danzig's band on tour. But then I heard that they got together, with yet a
different bass player... and they are no longer on Epic Records... who
knows where they are at now!
although... new Flotsam and Jetsam comes out soon, as well as more cool
stuff on Metal Blade.. New Galactic Cowboys and they signed a VERY Dream
Theater sounding band called Divine Regale (they were on the last Metal
Massacre) CD.

One major complaint that I have about James in his live
performance is really not even his fault. The sound crew
just totally cranked the hell out of his vocals to the point
of ear bleeding! I'm no old fart, but I prefer distortion
created by the artist, not by my own ears. I have also
listened to more live stuff on tape and CD lately, and I
noticed that the first song or so may be a little shakey,
but after that his range and tuning are pretty rock solid.
I definitely think he can sing circles around Charlie. But
since you mentioned Jeff Tate... I have heard him live in
person and on tape, and he sings with such style and ease
that I am in awe!! I can't really imagine him singing for
DT, but he is still my all-time favorite singer! However,
as an instrumental group... DT kicks ass!!!!!!! There is
something to be said about liking whoever was singing for
DT when you got to know them. (IAW era for me) I did get
WDADU, and I still prefer James' version of those songs.
Charlie would have been a good singer for Kansas or some
classic rock group! :)

I have a Sandoval Custom Flying V with Dimarzio PAF's installed and can
honestly say that these are the best pickups currently in any of my
guitars. <I own several good ones, but even the PAF's blow my Les Paul's
Gibson PAF's out of the water for feedback control.> The only pickups I
believe <speaking as a luthier and a musician> that would be better are
Bartolinni's. EMG's suck tone right out of your instrument. JP's pickup
configuration, along with the Air Norton and Steve <Blucher> Special <can't
remember the single coil model>, is a really cool setup. You can get some
really decent tone with it, especially a sweet, sorta scooped sound.
So, I can safely say DiMarzio is one of the better models for pickups,
along with Bartolinni. But, then again, it all comes down to personal
preference. What works for me probably won't work for you and vice versa.

I've bought CDs that I later wished I wouldn't have paid for, but it's
usually for bands that are mentioned here on the 'jam. You know, if I'm

or a 6-pack of Schlitz Ice. In other words, if I'm going to waste my

Seems like this thread will never die, eh? You should have seen James
on the European Tour, especially the first shows. Absolutely flawless.
Perfect. On the last three shows he had some minor problems with the
rough vox on Mirror/Lie, but it seemed as if he just had to clear his
throat with these songs, the rest of the shows was fine.
Remember Charlie singing Metropolis? Pathetic! James is so unbelievable
powerful. Also his stage presence was better than ever on these shows,
though I think he should calm down a bit instead of starting arguments
with the audience...
Well, "Thoughts" by Spock's Beard sounds interesting? It's like a
tribute to Gentle Giant! Anyone else into these guys?

As far as I know, Prong does not exist anymore. Tommy Victor is playing in an
other band (can't remember the name) and I believe that Ted Parsons is drumming
with Primus (not sure). Rude Awakening was the last of a series of excellent
albums (do not forget BEG TO DIFFER and PROVE YOU WRONG - anybody knows the
WHOSE FIST IS THIS ANYWAY mini ???). Let's still hope for a new album some time
!!!!
To please the Dream Heads (I am one too ...): When is this new album finally
coming out ? I personally hope for some more LIE, VOICES, UNDER A GLASS MOON,
LEARNING TO LIVE stuff. Would be great, a real eargasm.
BTW, what are RUSH fans supposed to do during a RUSH concert ???

Hi all
first off, a quick warning. Yesterday I saw Machine Head, and today I'm going
to see Karma To Burn. I'll post reviews in the next couple of days. You have
been warned - there will be no Dream Theater content.
The digest has become fairly easy to read recently - just loads of stuff about
some video system, and people wailing about the difficulties associated with
buying used green or white guitars. Still, it was nice to see somebody moaning
about the excessive use of abbreviations - these and all those long sig files
must play hell with Damon's speech computer.
Has anybody got the new album by The Gathering yet? I haven't had time to look
for it yet, but I'd be interested in any reviews.
I'm still looking for a Tiamat mailing list - I would be very grateful to any
jammer who could point me in the right direction.
