    Hello,
Got a 9am meeting, just wanted to drop a note beforehand. First, as for
no lasers on Red Sector A for Rush, I would be willing to bet that they
can't be sure if at all the venues the lasers will hit the roof to cut
them off. As many people know, stray lasers can be dangerous...:)
Charlie vs. James. Charlie could never handle the growls on Lie. Nuff
said, IMHO. I definitely agree that James's live performances have
improved greatly. I've seen them four times and each time James was
better. The Birch Hill Home for the Holidays was, IMHO, perfect. The
sound, song selection, and James were all dead on. Now if they could
    just pick a better venue...
My CD store has the new Megadeath coming out on June 17. Are they
anything like Megadeth? And is this Dream Theatre band any good either?
Stupid clerks annoy me. Of course if I spelled Bush wrong, the flames of
    hell might consume me. :P
Ibanez: I for some reason remember that one of the Reb Beach models was
being developed with a high A for a seventh string. But I guess they
aborted this prototype when Winger was aborted... Those Reb Beach
    Voyagers were pretty cool too.
And I am a Prong fan for whoever was asking. Was hoping they would be
at Ozzfest too. To no avail... AS a result of my not having any money
when tickets went on sale for PNC Center, I will have to get scalped tix
for every show I want to see. Just adding to the bastards wealth. If
anyone has extra Ryche or Rush tix for PNC, Jones Beach, or Camden, let
me know. I'll pay a fair price! Already got my Collective Soul tix for
    this Friday though... heheh...
            GET WELL MERLO!!!

A lot depends on your rig. What are you playing the JPM through? Of course I know you'd go to Duncans before changing your amp, but it would help to diagnose the problem.

Ok, DTC first! I personally dislike CD's voice, I think he only sounded good on 'status seeker'. LaBrie really does mean it when he screams "I am the killing HAAAAAAAND!!!!!", and besides being a much better screamer, I think he is a lot more emotional when he sings in his lower registers too. So he gasps a lot, and comes up with dancing turtles, but so what? All of this IMHO of course, and I respect someone else's opinion in liking CD better, but if CD was still in the band, then my guess is I'd only like their instrumentals... I just hope they redo WDADU in the studio with James at some point!! (yes, I have WDATU...)

As for Prong... I'm a Prog. fan, does that count??? But seriously, I have "prove you wrong", and I like some of the songs in there... I got it after I saw the video clip to "unconditional", and besides being repetitive, I still think that song rocks! :)

Hope D-Man gets better soon... and how is JP? anyone heard what happened after that clinic?

Are you guys kidding or what? Charlie Dominici, a great voice comparable with LaBrie? I don't think that. For me Dominici spoil WDADU. About the perfomance of LaBrie on stage I agree a little with you. The singers who could fit better in DT are Mike Vescera (ex-Malmsteen) and Ralph Sheepers (ex-Gamma Ray) That's what I call good singers and great perfomance on stage.

    Howdy jammers,

[Kick JLB?] I think this whole JLB discussion has a point. If the line of defense is "it's not his fault that the other guys are so good!!", then maybe there *is* something wrong with this picture. On the other hand, it took DT two whole years to find someone at least as good as JLB is, so what else could they do? Get the best voice you can get and get on with your life, what else... My favorite singer for DT would be myself. He he he. I particularly think that the best singers are in European bands, especially German and Italian bands. And while Geoffrey Tate is a little old now (he's almost 40!), but he's definitely the one who set the standard all others will be judged by.

[DiMarzio] I have never experienced what has been described by a couple of people already. Both my Ibanez have DiMarzio pickups and they have just about the same output volume as my other guitars, which have Seymours. No unwanted feedback. They are not much noisier either. The tone is more middle-range while Seymours seem to be more balanced as far as treble/mids/lows go. Plus, I played a JMP100 at this store through various amps, including some pretty high-gain distortions, and it was never noisy. The sound was just perfect. I think whoever is having a problem with their DiMarzios should try and see a different guitar than the one they've been taking their guitars to. Me? I work on my guitars myself :).

[Floyd Rose] The biggest advertisement for the Floyd Rose has always been that it never goes out of tune. It is a pain in the ass to learn to tune it up properly though. There are some things I have to do when I am exchanging strings in order to get it in perfect balance. They're not in any book, I had to learn it myself. Probably everyone ends up developing their own little tricks. If anybody wants some information about it, I'll be glad to help. Just e-mail me privately.

    Yours

    Christian, aka KillMary

Umm...the only Fate's CD I've really liked (and I've tried most) is Parallel's it took many listens at first, but the more I hear it, the more I love it...kinda like Mindcrime when it first came out...I didn't dig it at first, but it grew on me. I haven't heard APSoG yet (awaiting my copy!) so this one does not apply! For DT fans, I reccomend Parelle's but giv it a chance..

    > I don't think there's a floyd-rose out there that stays in perfect tune > when you smash your strings. I have a double locker on my RG470 (the > purple one), and once in a while I start goin' haywire with the whammy, > but it's all a matter of string tension.

The Ibanez Edge Floyd trem should stay in perfect tune, if your guitar is set up correctly. Once your strings are broken in (which is a simple process you can do while putting them on the guitar, or that you can do by just playing the thing for an hour) they will maintain a pretty static tension. If the string isn't stretching anymore, and your trem is locked properly on the bottom and the top, your strings should not change pitch at all. If you're using a 470, it's probably a few years old. Next time you're changing the strings, check the lock nut at the top of the neck (Doesn't that sound like a gonad disorder?) and see if you can spot any grooves on the part that's bolted into the guitar neck, or on the three little removable screw-in thingies. Grooves on these pieces make the lock less effective in holding the string down. That can obviously play a part in your trem going out of tune. You should be able to whammy like a Madsman with an Ibanez Edge trem (especially if it's not that low pro edge crap that the Madsman hates) without any tuning problems. Vai changed guitars onstage for a few reasons: A). He uses different tunings, and you CAN'T easily retune a Floyd style trem in between songs, to keep with the lettering/numbering of points style of the Ytsejammers, instead of using B). I'll use: 2). He's Steve Vai. He is a poser (in a good way). He likes to put on a show. Did he change clothes for the end jam session at your show too? He wants to make the image count. If that means playing 12 different guitars in a 12 song set, he'll do it. It's also possible that he broke strings. He beats the hell out of them, whammy frags em, and bends them off the neck with some degree of regularity (we're talkin' fiber here)... these things will compromise the string life.

I know that people over here (Brazil) call many instruments "viola".. When I used to play a 12-string acoustic people called this "viola". :) But the real viola I don't know if is the 10 or it has 7 strings. Well, Egberto Gismonti used to play all instruments with strings. I have one LP where he plays 12, 10, 7 and 6 strings. BUT, this 10 strings is not 5-double strings like on a 12-string. It has a neck like the 7-string bass guitar (or bigger). So, we have acoustic guitars with 4 (cavaquinho), 5-double-strings, 6 (you know..), two types of 7-strings (one of them called "viola"), 8 (4-double: bandolim, banjo..), 10 and 12-strings!! :-))

    Enough strings for today? :)

DTC: I heard about Phillips will not be sponsoring (sp?) the next Monsters of Rock.. Anyone (brazillian jammers) know anything about it? I *need* to see DT alive!! :( Well.. maybe DT will come anyway. ;)

Okay everyone, imagine this: You are watching DT Live in Tokyo vid and instead of KJLB announcing that "This one's off Images and Words, this is, Under a Glass Moon!".You see an old wrinkled and slightly less well known singer (Charlie Dominici) announce the song. Oh shit you say!!!!!!! NOOOOO!!!! I thought he was replaced!!!!!!!!!! So after gaining your composure the song starts. Everything is sorta okay until the end of the second verse(you know the "Bear this honor in my name" scream.) And Charlie does it something like this.

" Um....Um..... Bear....um....this ...um.um..HONOR......um. IN....my.....name........???" And you see JP and JM just look at each other in wide eyed wonder at how great they think his talent is.....................NOT...... I don't think so!

Nothing beats a " Bear this honor in my NAAAAMEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" scream any day of the week. Charlie just couldn't hack it. That's why they didn't keep him. If there are those of you out there who are such a big fan of his,why don't you go find his current band and listen to them.I hear they are great!!!!

ATTENTION: MY HUMBLE OPINION TO FOLLOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i don't think Dominici "spoiled" WDADU, though it is hard to listen to his vocals for me...... LaBrie absolutely blows him out of the water emotionally-speaking.....CD just sounded as if he were reading the lyrics.....KJLB does a really good job on Fortune in Lies, and also on Killing Hand (the screaming may be out of hand a bit at the end, but very well done). KJLB and Status Seeker do not get along it seems, probably because it's not in KJLB's normal range and feel, though I love it when he says "OK, Mike, get funky..."..... And if ANYONE has heard Dominici do Metropolis and still prefer him, then I need the crack you're smoking.....

    > About the perfomance of LaBrie on stage I agree a little with you.

LaBrie on stage changes from appearance to appearance. I've seen him have really good presence (never SPECTACULAR) and I've seen where he doesn't. I think he's more focused on performing well, which may explain why he tends to get pissed off at the audience every now and again.....he may have TOO much professionalism.....

    > The singers who could fit better in DT are Mike Vescera (ex-Malmsteen) and > Ralph Sheepers (ex-Gamma Ray) That's what I call good singers and great > perfomance on stage.

Mike Vescera is terrible. I absolutely despise his voice - sounds just plain bad. Probably the worst of the Malmsteen vocalists and he doesn't make up for it on stage.....

Now if you had said Joe Lynn Turner, or even that Goran guy from Seventh Sign(?), at least their voices were good.

The problem is that it would be very difficult for a singer in Dream Theater (or any of them, besides MP) to have spectacular stage presence....most of them concentrate on performing their music rather that possibly compromising it with jumping around or something like that. (Although I Mother Earth was pretty awesome on stage).....You'll never see a Zack DeLaRocha-esque stage presence in DT. Just sit back and enjoy the musicality, unless, that is, you're at the Birch Hill............
