I actually found out about the band Divine Regale through the Ytsejam.
I think one of their members was online at some point. Anyways, I was
a college DJ at the time, so I was able to pick up their 1994 CD
"Horizons". In fact, I remember emailing someone at Metal Blade
telling them how impressed I was with this CD. It *is* Dream Theater
-esque in many parts, ...but at the same time it has a quality all its
own. If anyone wants to hear it, I'd be glad to make trades...that is
unless one of the members is online and has extra CD's left!!
Anyways, its great to hear that a band of this caliber has been signed
to such a great label for prog-metal bands such as Metal Blade!

    Rock on!

This user has his/her e-mail account disabled because it is our school's

In case the student is enrolled in one of our summer classes, then the
account is disabled for one of the following reasons:

            - owner has some problems regarding his/her e-mail/disk quota
            - owner has been found lying in a ditch a bloody mess wearing a
torn "Dream Theater" shirt and uttering something about Yitsee
              oatmeal and goats.
NOTE: The user won't get or receive a copy of this e-mail. He/she is too

Ok, one last blabber about singers. I think the reason people always
disagree on all these singers is because it's mostly based on how one likes
a singer's voice. For example, I like LaBrie's voice because even when
he's singing at a high pitch, his tone is still rich and full. However
other singers mentioned here sound too thin for my taste... that'd be Ray
Alder for example. I just don't like his voice... but apparently many
people do.... and that's that. It doesn't mean he's a bad singer. And I'd
rather not talk about who's a better singer, because I'm not a singer.
However, most of the time when I've seen singers jumping in on these
reocurring discussions ( and I refer to 'singers' as people who've truly
studied the techniques and know their shit about this subject), they
usually place LaBrie a notch above other singers that are usually discussed
on this list... except with Tate with whom he's usually consiedered an
    equal.

But as far as *my* personal opinion, all I can say is that I've always
found JLB's voice to be pleasant to my ear, powerful, unique, and very
    emotional.

And as for live performance, Ithink it has more to do w/ personal
expierences. I for one, saw him sing PERFECTLY at the show I went to, and
all the bootlegs that I have go from a very bad night, to excellent,
    CD-quality performances.

And stage presence shouldn't even be considered. Music was meant to be
HEARD. Stage preference is a triviality that became important when rock
became so popular. But if the music's good, I don't need anybody to run
around and tell me I should scream for him. I'd rather he dedicate himself
to do the best performance he can. In fact I find that I appreciate music a
lot more when I close my eyes.

Not necessarily. In this case, yes, but if Dave Mustaine cut his

you'd probably piss all over him. It's a tough line to cross. Madonna gets

As I approach my last few days here in Gainesville, Florida, I wandered over
to the local used-CD/bootleg shop. While actually looking for a Massive
Attack disc, I happened upon something by a band called Majesty. No, this
ain't one of those nifty Bahr Boots by a band formerly known as Majesty. It
actually was what appeared to be a German metal band by this name. I forget
the title of the album, but from the looks of the bandmembers and the list
of equipment they like to use, they seem to be Metal to me (no flames for
the apparent stereotype). I was under the impression the actual Majesty, the
band who refused to give up their name which forced our beloved Long Island
Quintet (LIQ) to race through names like "Glasser" and others before
settling on "Dream Theater" (is that how it's spelled? ), is actually a Jazz
band of sorts. So..... WTF? Comments from the peanut gallery?

Thank you, and have a day.

I just bought the new Magellan CD "Test Of Wills". Pretty good CD. I
liked "Impending Ascension" better, but there are differences on this
    new one:

    1) A real drummer (Which they have a drum solo on track 2 to prove this)
    2) More Guitar

My favorite song on the album 'Walk Fast, Look Worried' has great
    acoustic guitar work on it.

When I was at Tower Records, I saw a boxed set called "Supernatural
Farie Tales, The Progressive Rock Era". It is a 5 CD set. It has some
obvious groups (Genesis, Yes, ELP), some mentioned here (Gentle Giant),
some not so obvious (Frank Zappa, Roxy Music?!?), and a bunch of groups
I have never heard of. Is this box set any good?

I was looking at the Magna Carta web page and noticed "Crack The Sky"
was in the list of artists. Checking it out, I found out that they are
on the Genesis tribute CD. I will have to look for it. (If anyone can
tell me where I can find CTS CDs, especially "Into the Greenhouse", I
    would appreciate it.)

Also, those of you still looking for Magellan's "Hour Of Restoration" or
Shadow Gallery's self titled release, Magna Carta is releasing them for
direct order only. I might actually be able to get those CDs at a
    reasonable price....

Hey, maybe we should start up a Bay Area concert list. That way, those of
us who live out in the leftish area can know about such things. While I
knew about Rush and couldn't go, I didn't know about Spock's (I've never

I don't think anyone could be James LaBrie better than James LaBrie, just
like I don't think anyone could write guitar parts for Alice in Chains
better than Jerry fuckin' Cantrell. That's what I don't think. As for what
I do think... I do think that LaBrie will have to be in the band for at
lease another decade before people stop playing this "what if" game and
figure out that years ago John Petrucci, Mike Portnoy, John Myung, and
    Kevin Moore made a DECISION.

Yeah? Rob Zombie sounds like James Hetfield's mom. ;)

    > and whats with james's gasping onstage? "hey <GASP!> out there > <GASP!!!> Alright, <GASP> this one kicks <gasp> ass.. this is YTSE > <GASP!!!!!> JAM!!!"

    1. Dominici doesn't have half the lungpower of LaBrie. The reason Dominici went weakass-falsetto so often during live shows was because he didn't have the force to resonate his natural voice at high pitches. He had no wind. (plus, he wanted to save his voice so he could falsetto more during the encore.) My point is, you won't hear Dominici gasp on bootlegs because he's not expending the necessary effort to lose one's breath to begin with.

    2. Ever try singing along to "Under A Glass Moon" at full volume? Do you have any idea how loud LaBrie's voice really is? Ever try holding that note at the end as long as he does it at live shows? Ever try singing those notes at the end of "Innocence Faded?" I'm not saying you can't sing, Rip, I'm not jerking you around, I'm just amazed that you would ask such a question. I've sung through "Metropolis" before, and I wonder how LaBrie does it *AND* about ten other songs without passing out...

    > i normally would post something like, but i figured with as hostile as > everyone gets over someone saying they dont like james, i'd send my > warmest retorts.

I don't mind that you don't like James, but pointing out that he gasps onstage considering what he does is like asking why boxers have icebags on their faces after a fight.

Personally I think all one need do is listen to LaBrie on the live version of "Light Fuse And Get Away" (from Bahr's WDATU), where he jumps the octave. It sounds something like this:

"STOP YO' HANDS FROM SHAKING LOOK AT ME YOU FUCKIN' COCKSUCKER MOTHERFUCKEEERRRRAAGHAHGHAHGGH!!"

Well...that's not his exact line, but that's his tone. He blasts that line like he's being shot out of a cannon. Hmmm....LaBrie missiles...

One of those classic blunders is dead-on correct. The other can be tested by e-mailing me with a phone number at which you can be reached. No no no, I mean RIGHT NOW, Elliott. The Celestion Confederacy would like a word with you. No no no, I'm part Sicilian, too! Thus you can't tell WHICH blunder you've screwed up... But earmuffs are advised...

    Hi!

Anyone has asked in the near past about the new THE GATHERING album. I have the promo copy of "Nighttime Birds" and all I can say is: wonderful! I think that's the best words to describe the work of Anneke van Giesbergen and her musicians. Wonderful voice, wonderful melodies ("Confusion"), wonderful arrangements and wonderful rhythms! In my opionion it is better than "Mandylion". So check it out! And: hey Tiamat, look how easy it is to make a moving piece of music without getting boring...
