Actually Vescera sang on the Seventh Sign album, and very well IMO. I also saw Yngwie on that tour, and Vescera sounded great. Goran sang on Eclipse, and possibly Fire and Ice, although I can't remember that one. Jeff Scott Soto was by far the best Yngwie vocalist, though. Joe Lynn Turner did a fine job on Odyssey and Trial by Fire-Live in Leningrad, and don't forget Mark Boals on Trilogy.

Anybody know which band Yngwie was in first, Alcatraz or Steeler?

What a terrible mental image this produces. I gotta steer clear of Swifty's page, it's giving me these thoughts.... Everyone who likes jazz should go out and get the Marc Cary album "Listen". Greetings ye 'jamanoids...

Oh, what a dilemma. I get four discs in the mail from CDNow (including Magellan's "Test of Wills" and Shadow Gallery's "Carved in Stone") and then two Mike Bahr discs arrive as well. What to listen to first????

Just wanted to thank all the jammers who've recommended Shadow Gallery. This is indeed a great band. "Carved in Stone" rokz some serious nadz. I like the disc quite a bit; there's a strong keyboard presence and the vocals are great. Either Mike Baker can *really* change vocal styles, or some of the other guys handle lead vocals for a passage here and there -- it doesn't sound at all like the same fellow in places. "Crystalline Dream" and "Ghostship" are just fantastic songs.

As for Magellan's newest, this isn't what I was expecting given my previous listening ("Impending Ascension"). The guitars have moved to the forefront and the keyboards have pretty much receded into the background except for a few passages. That's disappointing, but the vocal harmonies are as strong as ever and Brad Kaiser rocks as the new drummer. This disc is growing on me, too; I expect I'll get used to the lack of keyboards in time. *sniff*

The Bahr discs: SFAM -- interesting. Chris Cintron *really* sucks as a possible vocalist for DT (boy, does he mangle ACoS). Sound quality isn't what I'd have expected given the raves I've heard here, but then again you have to remember Mike's "excellent Nissan" analogy. WDATU, on the other hand, has excellent sound quality, almost professional "live album" quality. And hearing James on these tracks makes it all worthwhile. Good job, Mike!

Everybody else: Pick up the new Magellan, and get Shadow Gallery's "CIS" while you're at it. Can anybody tell me what Shadow Gallery's first is like? Or Magellan's first, "Hour of Restoration", for that matter?

    Cheers, Phil

Is this really the general view of WDATU? When I heard this, I was very disappointed. Now mind you, I only have a dubbed version, not the CD, but 1st gen to a type II high bias tape should still sound killer. I thought even the easily accessible tunes (AFiL, TKH) were average at best. I know that Mike didn't want to use anything that everyone already had, but with that considered, I still thought the overall album needed polishing. A guess it was a good effort, but I was just expecting so much more from this album. I'm glad I didn't spend any money on it. I am glad that Mission: Impossible was on it. Also, Get Funky isn't a new part. That part was always in Status Seeker, but they cut off the intro and just extended this part. Then, they put a small break before the vocals come in. This may lead you to believe that the beginning was brand new, but its not. I don't think this part deserved it own title, because it's all just Status Seeker.

Probably everyone ends up developing their own little tricks.

I "play" a Jackson with a Floyd Rose. I've found that it's much easier to tune it back up if I change the strings one at a time instead of all at once. I've also noticed that whenever I break a string (usually the G), the other strings are raised in pitch exactly 1/2 step. This makes finishing the song much easier during a gig.

    Oh goody!! :)

Announcement to all first: Darkest of Winters has been shipping and the first wave should hit fairly soon now. Precious Things continues to ship. Virtual Songs is... gasp... still on schedule! Fancy that!! :)

Well, to all of you who begged, borrowed, and pleaded to me to get copies of these... here's your chance. Don't waste this chance. :) $60 for an Acoustic Dreams prototype goes _beyond_ "a steal". Only about 10 protos of AD exist in the world. Wrath and ITS are the two rarest discs I've made, in terms of print run. Kev must really be desperate for the cash...

[ Buck Stodgers ] > no lasers on Red Sector A for Rush, I would be willing to bet that they > can't be sure if at all the venues the lasers will hit the roof to cut > them off. As many people know, stray lasers can be dangerous...:)

Rush can only use lasers at roofed venues.. it's the law where hazardous radiation-emitting devices are in use that the emission must be terminated safely. Plus, I'm impressed that they could use 85 mirrors to make three lasers seem like dozens. :)

[ James Bennett ] > >Well thanks a whole fucking lot for saying hi, asswipe. Sheesh.. heavy flow today, ladies? Try Midol.

James' voice complements DT's musical style extremely well. It gives it an exotic, otherworldly quality without making it foreign or unfamiliar... the likely result of his being Canadian.

The reason I still like DT probably more than any other band is their ability to write _songs_. Writing a melody that's both catchy and deep enough to be worthwhile is difficult, but DT can do it. This is probably the reason why I like but don't love most other prog bands out there. They can write intelligent stuff and they play very well, but often they don't truly craft melodic tunes. It's an inborn gift, I figure. While I was more comfortable with Kevin Moore in the mix, at which point I thought DT was lined up optimally, I am sure that Derek won't disappoint.

After reading through the posts about James and Charlie, I felt compelled to write. A lot of you complain about Charlie, which you are entitled to, but he was a part of DT. Also, DT managed to get into the studio (professional) with him, so he had to have some redeeming qualities with both the BAND and the producers.. I did notice How Kevin backstabbed him in Rip though. In my opinion, I enjoy Charlie's vocals just as much as I enjoy LaBrie's... And as sappy as this sounds, if I were Charlie or James, I would be extremely hurt to see how people on the mailing list regard them. I would not listen to DT just for the music, for the lyrical portion of the song is what "completes" it for me. My point is: Charlie and James are both picked on because of their voice. That is THEIR instrument, and they both use it well. You all shouldn't be so harsh on them. (sorry about the unintelligable writing) - Dan

First of all, I have to agree with James here... Spock's Beard was f-ing awesome!!! I really enjoyed the opening band Maximum Indifference as well (in fact, I'm listening to their cd right now!), kind of a Rush-flavored instrumental band with a touch of funk :o>

TWO!!! There must have been TWO Ytsejam shirts, because *I* was wearing one of them!!! I only saw two other people in the joint wearing DT shirts (Scott & Neil I'm guessing)... I would have said hi, but I'm kind of shy, and I didn't recognize either shirt as a "Ytsejam" shirt (I don't know what the old ones look like), so I chickened out :o(

Scott, I think you're being a little harsh here, considering I walked right in front of you several times and you didn't say hi to me either. I'm willing to give you the benefit of the doubt though... I suppose you were distracted by the beautiful blonde woman I was with... somehow "the friend" is always overlooked ;o)

So a belated "Hi" to all the Ytsejammers that were at the Spock's Beard show.

Well, that's enough out of me.

In fact, Steve Rothery (Marillion's guitarist) produced half of their debut album and also contributed a solo to one of the on it songs. Last year, Steve had a solo project called "The Wishing Tree" which features Enchant's drummer Paul Craddick. Their album "Carnival of Souls" is great if you're into mellow prog music. It has a female singer called Hannah Stobard and Pete Trewavas (Marillion) also plays bass on it. If you're into metal, you might wanna pass on this one. If you love beautiful, relaxed, mostly acoustic prog, check it out.

Oh, and buy Marillion's new brilliant album "This Strange Album" ! So far, it's available in Europe and Japan (with two bonus tracks) in a jewel case or limited edition digipack. The US release is due for July 10th (I think) and will have a 2 track bonus disc. They're currently touring Europe (I'll see them twice next week) :-)
