I thought Seventh Sign was great and was really disappointed by Magnum
Opus. I thought Vescera's voice was great on SS but dont know why I dont
care for MO. It could be Vescera or yngwie's fault.

YES! The band that possesses an infinite amount of time changes..enough
to make that girl in "The Exorcist" dizzy!
I just found (literally..about 25 min. ago) a website for SPASTIC INK,
the new band of former WATCHTOWER odd-time shred god Ron Jarzombek. Its
a great site because he explains what happened to WATCHTOWER and why a
third album never materialized.
Plus, I downloaded a bunch of .WAV files from the newly released CD "Ink
Complete" and it was soooooooooooooooooo good. Enough to convince me to
order the CD right there on the spot. Can't wait!!!!!!!!!!
Here's the URL..highly recommended for ANY fan of insanely insane

Well, the semester ends tomorrow. I'll be leaving Mizzou for the summer, possibly not to come back in the fall. Looks like I'll be finishing up my college career at UMSL in St Louis.
Once MU realizes that I'm not registered, they will most likely delete my cclabs and showme accounts. Therefore if you need to reach me, you can do so at shadow@devnull.cc.missouri.edu or gabbo@digital.dreamt.org until I get another address.
Don't worry, before I leave for home, I'll be sure to set my account to autoreply to every message and then 'forget' to unsubscribe from the jam.
As for tshirts, please remember to send the checks to my St Louis address, or I'll probably never see them.
I'm hoping the best for Chris Merlo, and I hope that his pain passes quickly. My condolences to his friends and family who feel obligated to visit him in the hospital and hear him bitch and moan. :)

this movie did rock, the only thing i didnt like was its udder (moo) predictability. upon first glimpse of the trailors for this flick and saw the shot of leeloo running around in that weird outfit that she seemed to be centered on i said "5th- its gotta be her or love" how i groaned when i found out i was right. COME ON. the only cool thing was this guy was making fun of it and laughed when bruce said "i love you" real loud that made it all worth it, totally ruined the "moment" :) aside from that, everything about this flick rocked.. well worth the cash

Had to reply to this after a few hundred Jams of lurking. :) I've been a HEAVY DUTY LaBrie supporter for the past few years, but recently, I'm sorry to say, I just can't do it anymore. I agree that he's amazing on the albums, tho' I don't like some of his gurgling on the "heavy" parts of Awake, but live is another story. Virtually anyone can make something sound excellent when he's perfectly rested and has as many takes (plus a bit of editing during production) as he needs in a studio setting. So, IMO, the true indicator of a great vocalist (and any musician for that matter) is in the live setting. I've got about 30 DT boots from the various album tours. Most of I&W he was superb. The Milan, Italy (11/93) show is an excellent example. He hits everything and sounds wonderful. Unfortunately, I haven't heard him do a show of that calibre in over three years. Most of the Awake tour that I have (about 7 shows) are all very inconsistent. He'll be great on certain songs during a show but then really crap out later. Forget about singing TTT, PMU, or even UAGM like he used to. When they did their Home for the Holidays "tour" they had been off the road for months, only played a few shows, and he just wasn't up to the standards I set for a professional vocalist. He was bearable at the Birch Hill show (12/29) but was embarassing at the El-N-Gee (12/30) show. I've stopped trying to convert people to DT fans b/c they see all the live stuff I have and then wanna hear it. They hear how badly LaBrie sounds and get instantly turned off. Very honestly, if I had the consistency problems he does, I would have retired by now. Even on the covers section of the ACOS album his vocal work is redone in the studio (ala Kiss) 'cuz he was terrible at the actual Ronnie Scott's show. And what about the Japanese Pay Per View show (1/95)? Made me cringe through 80% of the show. I realize he was very sick at that show, but I refuse to believe he's got that 3 year flu that's been going around. :) Sorry to bitch this long, but I've just become frustrated, as I'm sure the band members get, when they play at insane levels every single night and James drags them way down at least two out of every four shows. I'm surprised he's still with them, actually. Comments always welcome, but no flames please. Thanks...

I've got a good idea why you had problems with the LATM version of TTT. It's because TTT wasn't on the LATM CD. :) Mike Bahr released the UAGM from the LATM outtakes on Antiquities I bleeve, but I haven't seen or heard TTT from that show being on any boot. :) Take care...

no, i ain't talking 'bout those loud, big-haired (funny as hell) brit chicks......just a few books and an album I've been lis'nin to lately....
Books: The Green Mile by Stephen King......it's a serial with six parts to it, each released a month apaprt last year..... since i finally got around to it this year, i checked all six out of a library at one shot.....as usual per King, there's a decent sized set-up period, but once the guy gets going, HOLY..... It's life on death row for a guard guarding a litle french dude with a cool mouse for a pet, a huge dumb guy with magic in his hands and a crazy teenager, and a real asshole of a guard and King whips it up into one hell of a tale.....
Album: Absolutely by Rik Emmett (hence the subject) Emmett's solo stuff has been mentioned on the jam previously, but it wasn't the reason i picked it up....i got it because it was the only artist i recognized in the cd/tape bin at the 99 cent store i was at.......you know how it's mandatory to look thru the cut-out/cheap bins, because more often than not they'll have somethihng in there that shouldn't be? well, this is one of those cases...really enjoying this album.....doesn't have any of those crazycool solos folks were arguing about earlier this week, but it does have some solid, enjoyable songs.....
and it has the song "the big lie" which was one of my favorites of the late 80s/early 90s.....funny thing, i didn't check the song list when i grabbed the album, because i didn't expect to recognize any of the songs....but there are 2 or 3 that made radio way back when.....remember a song called "saved by love"?
anyway, those are my two little recommendations for today.....

Welp, I said I wasnt gonna do it this time, but since we're all spouting opinions here :) .....
LaBrie fucking RULES.
It makes me wanna throw up in my email box when I see people, ESPECIALLY on the Jam, talking shit about him.
I could go into explaining WHY I think he is the best singer tailor made for Dream Theater, but I'd only be telling two kinds of people: those that already know, and those that lick monkey balls. (i think scientists have actually found a connection between people who can't sing themselves and people who lick monkey balls)
I know it's not like me to be so rude, but it's even more rude to talk shit about someone who reads this list, but because of his "celebrity" profile cannot post here in his own defense. If ya wanna dog James, why dont you start your own hate mail list somewhere else.
Give it a fucking rest.

i'm not in opposition to your opinion here dave, i dont want to step on any toes, the reason for my post about him was not out of a true hatred for the guy or a "mis placement" in DT.. i dont disrespect anyone, but what gets me is some of the hypocrisy here. its fine to rip on mr chuck d. but someone bad mouths james, and its all hell to pay. as a charles fan i get sick of it, so i dissed it back the other way. i'm tired of trying to explain why i think all this bickering of opinions and saying other artists suck is dumb, i've been bitching it out for a long time, i figured taking the opposite turrent and putting some firepower may at least kick a few balls and put a smile on my face, if anything ;)
i still DO question james's position in the current band, and as previously stated, i thought he rocked ass on I&W. i dont think he's bad or degraded, just not complimenting the current DT optimally. i have yet to see someone on this list say james blatantly sucks. i think we're all entitled to our opinions on DTs vocalists, as any dominici hater would agree i'm sure, and while i'm not claiming james sucks, not claiming he's "ruining the music", not claiming dominici would be better for the current lineup, not claiming i want to rip his spine out his ear lobe and insert cockroaches, simply claiming someone else might be interesting to see in the drivers seat, i think the main problem with this debate is people cant accept some people are in slight opposition to james's vocal style. just my opinions.. death threats are welcome.

Has DT actually started recording yet? I thought I heard someone mention that the start date was this past Monday. I hope the birth of MP's daughter didn't cause any delay at all (although who could blame him if it did). I guess it would just be reassuring knowing that shit's already going down in the studio.

> Okay, here's a quick thought, why does everyone want to hate a > mainstream band?
Most fans of non-mainstream music (for example DT's) usually feel a little jealousy towards other performers who hit it big, while their music (which in their minds is the best music there is) don't. This usually ends up in complaining about how such-and-such band doesn't deserve that fame because they are not even close to the awesomeness of *our* band, and we (i'll start using 'we' because I used to think that way too) usually blame the fact that our band hasn't made it on MTV and radio. Of course this is the point of view taken by most people in most situations in life: blame somebody else. But the reason DT's music hasn't been so succesful yet is not because of MTV, it's because of DT's music. The music which dominates MTV is the music that most of today's youth relates to. Music has always been a reflection of society. MTV doesn't 'decide' what's gonna be played; they see what the kids like and then exploit it, because after all, they have to make money.
And remember that when I&W came out, PMU got a fair amount of radio and video airplay; enough to make DT very popular if everybody had liked it But the apparently not so many people seemed to be so attracted to it. But at least it attracted enough attention so that DT could make a decent living from their music and have a loyal fanbase. Be content with that. DT seems to.
As a final note, remember that time the guitarist from Blind Melon bashed DT on a guitar mag? Rember how JP responded? Now next time a person decides to bash the #1 act of the month, they should think about who they sound more like.
All this wrapped up in a nice, big, juicy IMHO

Ugh. Wrong?? The difference between listening to a CD thru 'woodstock sized speakers' and going to a live concert is the fact that it's live. A CD or any recorded medium could not capture all the energy that is felt in the live expierinece... much less if it was recorded in the studio. *However* visual experiences can add a special touch t a live performance, but at the same time, it takes away from what one hears. Your mind can only pay so much attention to all the diiferent information coming in through the senses.
A concert is a special moment.. It's a moment where you listen to the music as pure as you'll ever hear it. It is also a moment in time that will never be repeated again in which the performer and the audience are connected thru music. And all beacause of what you HEAR. The fan hears music that he likes, responds to it in some way (applauds, screams), the performer hears this and reacts to it by becoming more inspired in what he's playing, etc..In fact, if I didn't have to worry about all the ppl shoving by and the resident propellor head always whipping his hair in my face, I'd gladly shut my eyes in the next concert I go to.
> Think about it. If JM dressed in pink tights and waltzed around the > stage blowing kisses to the audience, would it be the same ??
Well JM surely wouldn't be the same, but if he plays what and how he always plays. the MUSIC wil be the same, and that's what I care about.
