I agree. James voice is incredible, I just don't quite like the screaming
or growling he did on Awake, and I don't particularly like his stage
presence. Mind you, I haven't had the chance to see DT live before, but on
the many boots I have (including a couple of videos), he doesn't come
across as being that great a frontman.
It just seems as though some of the things he says are really lame. Like,
just listen to the intro to PMU on LATM, or the "this is a very special
night for us... it shall be interesting... blah blah" thing on ACOS. He
just sounds like a geek. It's like, well,
it always sounds like he's struggling to try and find something (anything)
to say.
it's supposed to be a show and he's supposed to be performing! If he can't
introduce songs without interrupting the flow of the show or sounding
stupid, he just shouldn't introduce them. I think DT really need to take a
lesson from Queensryche on how to put on a good show. I'm not saying they
have to be as elaborate as QR, but they should make it more like a SHOW.
The way James introduces songs sometimes, you'd think it's some kind of
recital.
Don't get me wrong though, there isn't another rock vocalist who I'd take
over James, except maybe the Geoff Tate of 10 years ago, and this isn't
exactly 10 years ago, so...

I answered to express *my* opinion. He thinks DT should get rid of a lot
of their instrumental stuff, and I disagree. Generic prog fan? What the
fuck is that supposed to mean? The only "prog" bands I happen to be a huge
fan of are DT, Rush, and Queensryche. Are they "generic prog"?
Personally, I think bands like Ivanhoe, Echolyn, and Fates Warning (all of
which some people on this list go crazy over, but meanwhile they hate all
mainstream music) are far closer to being "generic prog" than DT. And
dipshit, why did YOU bother replying if your only intention was to call
Dream Theater's music "generic prog"? Maybe you should get the fuck off
this mailing list if you don't like DT.

I'm sorry, but the fact that Images & Words is my favourite album ever does
not mean I'm limiting myself to generic prog. And after all, *I'M* one of
the few on this list who's defended No Doubt, Alanis, and other bands that
are taboo on this list.
And you say I'm LIMITING myself (???) ... now that's just fucking
hillarious. I listen to just about all types of music except rap and
country (I own several dance CD's, classical CD's, jazz CD's, and CD's of
just about every other type of music you can think of). I'd like to know
how in hell the fact LTL, TTT, and Metropolis are my favourite DT songs is
"limiting" me. They're my fucking favourite DT songs and that's all there
fucking is to it. So go shove your attitude up your ass where it belongs,
you fucking piece of shit.
BTW, does anyone know what the hell's up with the influx of assholes on the
Jam lately (like Mr. Ravioli Hool here)? A guy can't even say he loves
Metropolis as it is, and that "Voices" is his least favourite DT song
without being flamed? Shit...

When you listen to a Joe Satriani album you think to yourself "This
guy's out of his mind! This is inhuman!" You seem him live and know he
is. Half of its his hands flying everywhere, the other half is that he
doesn't even look like he's trying: making all those faces and jumping
around, chatting with Stu... It sickens me... But I love the guy.

No, they don't deserve the fame because I don't like them. I'm the
consumer, I should get to see what I want on occassion on MTV and hear
it on the radio or in a juke. The fact that I don't isn't because of the
bands or their music, it's because of the companies that promote music.
Case in point: Van Halen has innumerable multi-platinum albums. The only
time you'll ever see a VH video on MTV is right after the song is
released for a month or so. Then it disappears. Why? Not because people
don't want to see it, but because MTV gets money from promoters and
marketers to put this new Shrub video on.

Funny, VH1 makes plenty of money and I see Police, INXS, Collective
Soul, and *gasp* Rush videos on there. MTV is just choosing to make the

urban public. On a related note: Does anyone else find it peculiar that
MTV shows rap videos during the day? Like maybe the fans of such music
have nothing to do at this time, i.e. WORK.

I'm sorry, but any band that headlines a tour on the release of their
first "major-label" album HAS to have popularity. Four thousand people
at Riverside Park in Agawam, MA couldn't have been wrong. Neither could
the few thousand at the Manhattan Center in NYC.

I actually like 'em both quite a bit, but if I say that I like Charlie a fair amount, but James LaBrie a bit more, I'm still making a judgement of relative value. And, to some extent, I'm still cutting whoever I like less. I think Tate's better than both of 'em, for that matter. I don't see why we can't discuss aesthetic values here, whether positive or negative, about Dream Theater (or anyone else out there...anyone up for another round of the Spice Girls?). But editing ourselves isn't doing anyone any good, either, aside from avoiding heated debate, which I, for one, actually enjoy. Of course, I like a thoughtful brand of debate, which doesn't always happen in this forum...

Uh....I like Watchtower -- think they're pretty cool. But RUSH?! I'd say they sound like an awful lot of other bands more than Rush. They're definitely a prog metal band, and, in that sense, I'd say they sound more like Altura than my beloved Canadian egghead musical wizards. Jason McMaster sure sounded different a few years later, though, didn't he?

I can see that. I'm a little bit of a homer here, since No Doubt's not far from glorious Long Beach, California, where I grew up. The "friend of a friend of a friend" thing at work. I don't think they're too bad, though. And that punk-ska-whatever sound seems, for better or worse, the wave of the immediate future. I guess it's supposed to bury "Alterative" music, from what the rock scribes are telling us.....

Well,well,well. I'd like to tell ya Canadian band named Harem Scarlem. Maybe you've already know about them. If you know them,skip this message,please.
They'll release their 4th album titled "Believe" on 25th May. I've already heard couple songs from this opus on radio. Those songs are incredible---melodic hard rock with high-tone vocalist. They re-arranged their musical aproach on this album. The 3rd one titled "Voice Of Reason" was grunge-oriented rock album, so they couldn't get much feedback from Japanese market where 80s style hard rock is still alive. So if you like melodic hard rock music,why don't you grab their albums? They are still on wea Canada.

My bad, I know that some, if not the rest of the band, originally was from Paramus, and I know that Bach was living in Jersey recently (I think he is moving to Cali), so I assumed that he was from there as well........maybe a bit of wishful thinking, too.
I'm never wrong, but I may be mistaken about that......

Vicious Rumors do indeed have a NEW singer!! They are now recording with a dude named Morgan Thorn...here is what was released in a recent press release:
A new chapter in Vicious Rumors history is about to be written. A new member has joined the "vicious circle", assuming the Lead vocal Slot! Morgan Thorn, a multi-talented, 28 year old "unknown" from Wisconsin, comes from a musical family who started him out in his musical career at the age of 5. Some of Morgan's influences have been Bruce Dickinson, James Neal and Carl Albert. "I feel very fortunate and am hungry for the chance to join forces with Vicious Rumors" Morgan says. Band leader/founder, Geoff Thorpe said, "The only way we could add someone to the band after Carl, is if we found someone truly great!! We did...he is unbelievable!! With Morgan in the band our limitations are gone. We can be as melodic as we want...and as heavy!!". morgan will debut his dynamic vocals on the bands upcoming CD.
And about Edwin Dare, I think that "The Unthinkable Deed" is their debut CD. I have "Can't Break Me" too and it's pretty cool but I've kind of grown sick of the cheesy lyrics...the music rocks though...

Hehe. I understand where you're coming from, but I might disagree a bit. I admit that they got rid of some vocalists relatively quickly, but James is a different story. Charlie left not only because of his weak live performance, but b/c he was substantially older than the rest of the band and there were personality conflicts. Tho' I don't think LaBrie is in any danger of having his job removed, I'm 100% sure that at least occasionally the other members get frustrated with him. It's only human. When four out of the five players on stage are kickin' ass and the frontman puts on a display that makes many in the audience cringe, it's gotta start wearin' on them, especially on things like the Japan PPV, when their performance is televised nationally. As to your other statement, there's a whole different rant/rave/frustration saved for the record label, but I'll save that for another time. :) Take care...

Well, after 3 1/2 long years, I finally changed from .11s to .09s and tuned back up to A=440 from 1/2 step down. Why did I do this? Because I got a free pack of strings with a guitar magazine recently. My Jackson plays like an Ibanez now :) But when I was tightening the locks that hold the strings in the bridge, the one that holds the G snapped! The part that broke off was the part where the hex wrench fits in the post when tightening, so the string is secure, but I have no way of getting it out now.
"But I can play along with my DT discs, now," I thought. Wrong! Not because of guitar problems, but because I stink! Time to practice....Boy my playing really blows some superchunks right now ;)
Oh well, I'm off to Crossroads Music to find out the smallest amount of replacement matter I'll have to buy to fix my axe. Bye, everyone!
