Um... Where do you live? "Cause if they're playing PMU, I'm moving
there. I haven't heard DT on the radio in four years.

>I could sell my guitar and a kidney, if necessary, and have the money >:)

Heck, just sell the other kidney too and get a Universe... Seriously, i
have enough trouble with SIX strings, now you want me to learn the notes
on another one... Oh, wait. They'd be the same as the other B string,
wouldn't they...

>HE IS AWSOME I CANT BELIEVE YOU WOULD EVEN THINK ABOUT HAVING A >PETITION TO GET HIM OFF THE BAND

Dear God, this is producing another of those foul mental images. Now
would they be one on top of the other, or just James spread across the
other four?

I'm just wondering when D-man's system is going to kick in and send us
some of these. Anyone heard a status report on the guy? Get well!

>When we buy a CD like Close to the Edge,

IMHO, Relayer is the best Yes album I have, and it only has three songs
with nearly no repeating riffage. Hmmm... That sounds like something
that happens in a men's room after burrito day.

>Are all concerts as loud as metallica concerts?

I almost hesitate to mention this given some of the 80's metal haters in
here, but the loudest concert I ever saw was Winger. I saw them in Essex
Jct., VT and the sound was so loud, it knocked over the first ten rows
of folding chairs before the screaming teenies could get to them...

>except for #1 which is kinda pointless and #7

Umm... I could be mistaken, but I think Gary and Nuno gave those songs
titles. I have to disagree though. Warheads has one of the most
mindblowing solos on that album. If the song has any point, that's a
good enough one for me. And yes, the album rules, IMHO.

>woot is wearing brand new shorts and they are already chafing his A

I cared more about the track and field stuph than your crack problems,
no offense...:)

>even tho mulder is dead

Don't count on it. Duchovny already signed on for next season and an
X-Files movie. But then again, killing off Mulder and bringing him back
wouldn't be half as silly on this show as it is on others. Can't wait
till next season! And the Buffy season ender tonight! Yeah, go ahead and
laugh. I've seen every episode.

I would agree with the above sentiment. I think Marillion's a band that's,
historically, been very good at this. Not that I necessarily want to run
headlong into a discussion of the virtues of the band again, but they do
write a lot of tunes with what might be called "pop sensibility."

Speaking with the singer of my former band a while back, he was commenting
on the difficulty in coming up with effective vocal lines in progressive
pieces of music. We've been talking about Watchtower some here...and I'd
say "Control and Resistance" has got some of the wildest vocal lines I've
heard. But that can actually get distracting at times. It's awfully tough
to hang your hat, say, on the vocal line from "Dangerous Toy." Which isn't
necessarily bad -- you can't hum Sonny Sharrock guitar lines, either -- but
it isn't always the most appealing at first listen.

In any event, this particular element seems a particular strength of Dream
Theater. Even in the midst of a really strange musical backdrop, there's
always a nice, strong, emotional vocal line that ties it together.

Yes, yes, and yes. Color me just as disappointed. I like hearing the
fuck-ups and missed hammer-ons. It shows me Petrucci and Vai are human
and gives me new hope in playing guitar. Though Satch is still God, no

On replacing KJLB:
>Bruce Dickinson(formerly of Iron Maiden)

I can just see it now: Kurt Loder of MTV news, "Powerhouse prog-metal
band Dream Theater, perennial MTV favorite, has decided to change lead
singers to create a better image and build a larger fan base. They chose
another perennial MTV favorite, Bruce Dickinson, formerly of Iron
Maiden. With these two forces combined, the band should be appearing at
a stadium near you this summer." In other words, I don't who who you
pixies are, but I sure like your pixie drink!! If DT wanted to improve
their image for the MTV generation, they'd pull a Blues Traveler and not
appear in their own videos.

A great Black Metal band is Moonspell

Hi there

I'm kinda new on the list, so I'm sorry if some of my topix already have
been discussed. If this gets long it's because I got 11 digests at the same
time...

>It just seems as though some of the things he says are really lame. Like,
>just listen to the intro to PMU on LATM, or the "this is a very special
>night for us... it shall be interesting... blah blah" thing on ACOS. He
>just sounds like a geek. It's like, well,
>it always sounds like he's struggling to try and find something (anything)
>to say.

I think the things JLB say live are great (my humble opinion of course),
like when he says "let me kill you London" after the Killing hand on LATM.
And the cool pauses after "this is", "this is... ...surrounded".

It would probably sound kinda weird if he talked like Axl Rose on stage.
Imagine JLB saying: "This is fuckin' surrounded. And you who don't like it
can get the hell outta here, and by the way, I hate Blind Melon. Mike,
could you hand me the scotch... 1, 2, 3, 4" Don't think so... (Axl would
have left out the Blind Melon part though, actually, I don't think they're
that bad ;)

Lars, don't get me wrong, I don't think this is what you mean with
none-lame speaches, I was just giving an example of another cool speaker.
(don't bother flaming me for that, I know I'm the only one who still likes
GNR)

As mentioned, I think James' little in-between speaches are cool.

Btw, I think James LaBrie has a great voice, much better than CD, although
CD isn't bad. I can't understand why people pour their shit over JLB and
then go buy albums with JLB all over them. Doesn't make any sense to me.

And then there's this Gwen discussion...

Believe it or not, I think No Doubt is a great band (IMHO). But I'm no
expert, I've only heard "I'm just a girl" and "Don't Speak" and I saw/heard
a few songs on a TV-concert (pretty cool). I like Gwen's voice a lot,
especially in IJAG.

I can't understand why a lot of people (I didn't say all) who listen to
progressive music, and other forms of heavier rock, have to dislike the
less complex musicstyles. (too bad it's the other way around too) I
consider The Smashing Pumpkins as good a band as most of the progbands I
listen to (except DT and Rush, they're incomparable), but I definitley
don't think Billy Corgan is a guitargod (as some of my grungerfriends do),
but he is a great songwriter.

And remeber: all of this is just my opinion.

>>MTV doesn't 'decide' what's gonna be played; they see what the kids
>>like and then exploit it, because after all, they have to make money.

>Funny, VH1 makes plenty of money and I see Police, INXS, Collective
>Soul, and *gasp* Rush videos on there. MTV is just choosing to make the
>most money by exploiting two sections of the population: teens and the
>urban public. On a related note: Does anyone else find it peculiar that
>MTV shows rap videos during the day? Like maybe the fans of such music
>have nothing to do at this time, i.e. WORK.

99% of MTV suxx. But I have seen PMU and TSM on European Headbangers ball,
and I've seen a song from Counterparts (don't remember which one) there
too. But a channel that's good two hours a week...

But there are a few other good channels. I get the german channel Viva 2
(viva 1 is worse than MTV) I've seen Dave Matthews Band, Yes, Pink Floyd,
etc... And I also get another german channel: ONYX, they show jazz,
classical music, country, and a lot more. I've seen a live song with Toto,
(Montreux Jazz Festival) and I've seen Yes and Pink Floyd there too.

I have to disagree on VH-1, I get the german version 4 hours a day and it's
_really_ bad, only hip-hop and so-called "soul".

btw, I'm not german.

OK, one more thing...

I recently listened to Extreme's "III Sides to every story" and discovered
how great it was. I've had it for a year now and I never really liked until
last week. (I listened to bands like Europe when it came out).
If you don't have it, get it. Nuno Bettencourt rox. Does anybody have his
solo album (if it is released yet), I would be grateful for a review.

with none-lame speaches, I was just giving an example of another cool =
speaker. (don't bother flaming me for that, I know I'm the only one who =
still likes GNR)

As mentioned, I think James' little in-between =
speaches are cool.

Btw, I think James LaBrie has a great voice, =
much better than CD, although CD isn't bad. I can't understand why =
people pour their shit over JLB and then go buy albums with JLB all over =
them. Doesn't make any sense to me.

And then there's this =
Gwen discussion...

Believe it or not, I think No Doubt is a great =
band (IMHO). But I'm no expert, I've only heard "I'm just a =
girl" and "Don't Speak" and I saw/heard a few songs on a =
TV-concert (pretty cool). I like Gwen's voice a lot, especially in IJAG. =

I can't understand why a lot of people (I didn't say all) who =
listen to progressive music, and other forms of heavier rock, have to =
dislike the less complex musicstyles. (too bad it's the other way around =
too) I consider The Smashing Pumpkins as good a band as most of the =
progbands I listen to (except DT and Rush, they're incomparable), but I =
definitley don't think Billy Corgan is a guitargod (as some of my =
grungerfriends do), but he is a great songwriter.

And remeber: =
all of this is just my opinion.

>>MTV doesn't 'decide' =
what's gonna be played; they see what the kids
>>like and then =
exploit it, because after all, they have to make =
money.

>Funny, VH1 makes plenty of money and I see Police, =
INXS, Collective
>Soul, and *gasp* Rush videos on there. MTV is =
just choosing to make the
>most money by exploiting two sections =
of the population: teens and the
>urban public. On a related note: =
Does anyone else find it peculiar that
>MTV shows rap videos =
during the day? Like maybe the fans of such music
>have nothing to =
do at this time, i.e. WORK.

99% of MTV suxx. But I have seen PMU =
and TSM on European Headbangers ball, and I've seen a song from =
Counterparts (don't remember which one) there too. But a channel that's =
good two hours a week...

But there are a few other good channels. =
I get the german channel Viva 2 (viva 1 is worse than MTV) I've seen =
Dave Matthews Band, Yes, Pink Floyd, etc... And I also get another =
german channel: ONYX, they show jazz, classical music, country, and a =
lot more. I've seen a live song with Toto, (Montreux Jazz Festival) and =
I've seen Yes and Pink Floyd there too.

I have to disagree on =
VH-1, I get the german version 4 hours a day and it's _really_ bad, only =
hip-hop and so-called "soul".

btw, I'm not =
german.

OK, one more thing...

I recently listened to =
Extreme's "III Sides to every story" and discovered how great =
it was. I've had it for a year now and I never really liked until last =
week. (I listened to bands like Europe when it came out).
If you =
don't have it, get it. Nuno Bettencourt rox. Does anybody have his solo =
album (if it is released yet), I would be grateful for a review.

=
Simon Mitternacht

Song of the day: "Ramatahatta" =
Sepultura

One of our very own Jammers, the always friendy Hui-Chi, was on the front page of the local Tribune the other day here in Arizona. (It showed her graduating from ASU). I just thought it was pretty cool to have a color pic of a Jammer on the front page, and have it not be an arrest or anything. :) Congratulations Hui-Chi and all other college graduates!! You accomplished what I never could.
