Odd that they refuse to put themselves into the musical genre of
black metal. I'm not sure what else they would be. Guh, genres are so
    confusing. That's it. Everything's ROCK.

18's a cool birthday, because it means you're officially an adult

19 has meaning for those of us near (or in) Canada, cuz that's the
drinking age over in that nation.......(of course i never had a drink in
canada 'til i was 21, so i wasted the two years, i suppose)

20 means you're hitting a second decade, the big 20....the first, and
perhaps last round number that you're ever gonna celebrate hitting,
because it means you ain't a teenager no more........

21: you're a 'real'! adult now, all barriers (except for car rentals, of
    course) removed........

22? What's the freakin' use? I invite someone to tell me what, if
anything is there to look forward to in turning 22.....

i hit it in two days (the 21st), and I need an excuse to celebrate

partha (hey, a little advertising never hurt) mukhopadhyay

ps: Lars Hellsten: that reply of yers, murder city dead
things....never heard that one before, funny as hell......just
redeemed yourself in my book :)

ps2--anyone use word 7 for PC's? Tried to make a smiley :) in a word
document and it turned into a little (upright) smiley face....coolness

ps3: you on the back wall, this is it last call.......better buy 'em now
or you'll wish that you did...........

    >And we *know* that what they say goes. :) Actually, I guess it's more >important what MTV says.

Oh yeah... MTV controls the music industry, I forgot for a second. You know what? That argument is getting real tiresome.

I don't know that much about MTV, but Much Music are similar. They play whatever's popular. BUT, MM also has to have Canadian content, so Canadian bands get a lot of airplay. So what does that mean? Well, I Mother Earth, for example, get TONS of airplay on Much Music, and have over the past three years. Their videos are basically in rotation. But they're not that popular here. Meanwhile bands like The Tragically Hip and Our Lady Peace that play simpler, more mainstream music are HUGE in Canada, but most people in the US don't know who they are. In other words, if you were to play DT videos around the clock, there's NO FUCKING GUARANTEE they'd become an instant success.

And on a related note, how come No Doubt are so huge in Canada, along with every other band that becomes popular in the US? We don't GET MTV! And Much Music don't ONLY play what MTV plays. Nor do they just play whatever's popular in the US.

Besides, I'd rather that DT do what Rush did, and gradually build up a huge loyal fan base over years and years. These instant successes like No Doubt usually disappear in a few years as the teenyboppers move on to the next trend. So what you'd have is a bunch of 14 year olds going to DT concerts for a couple of years, and then when their tastes change, it'll be the next set of 14 year olds who decide what the next trend is going to be.

And even if it *is* MTV that dictates what music becomes popular, what's stopping DT from producing good videos? If the record company thought DT had what it takes to become the next huge thing, why wouldn't they spend oodles of money to put out a bunch of videos? (I know DT's songs are usually long, but there are plenty of songs you could make good videos from.)

The fact of the matter is that if anyone in the industry thought the public would like DT more than No Doubt, it would be DT who'd be huge. DT just aren't mainstream music, the average person just doesn't like them, and that's all there is to it. I'm as big a DT fan as the next jammer, but why is it that so many DT fans seem to think that everyone else in the world is like us? We're the exception (I love being exceptional :) ), not the norm.

Everyone here is constantly posting anecdotes about how their girlfriends, wives, friends, whoever, hate DT and listen to more mainstream music. Or about how they play DT for people and they think it's cheese. I wish more people here would just face the reality that the majority of people who hear DT just don't like the music. There's no doubt (flame me for that if you want) that if DT were played in rotation on MTV they'd become WAY more popular than they are now, but the fact is, they wouldn't become nearly as popular as No Doubt, or whomever MTV plays, so why SHOULD MTV play DT? Because they're more talented?

Heh....yeah, I'm in about that boat. The loudest show I've ever seen was Whitensake at Irvine Meadows, which was just unreal. I had crappy seats and I still thought my head was about to implode (I hadn't yet converted to the glory of earplugs). Metallica, when I've seen them, have been pretty loud. And Vai was gawdawful loud on G3. Eric Johnson, on the other hand, wasn't particularly loud at that show, though he was reasonably loud when I saw him at Wadsworth Hall in LA back in '92.

Actually, the loudest fuckin concert I've ever been to had to be Ozzy at Universal Amphitheatre in LA... I had pit passes, the place wasn't HUGE, and Ozzy had the sound system that could blow away the LA Coliseum...

Are they back? Had they never parted ways?

You're not alone in thinking that they had broken up, but they're alive and in the midst of a European tour at the moment. They played London Astoria last Wednesday.

    >I think JLB's problem isn't with his voice, I think it's with his >stage presence. Arguing with the audience can be kinda bad.

My only experience of this was last month at the 2nd gig in Tillburg. James's irritation with some of the folks at the front screaming song requests at him mounted, until he finally told them to 'Shut the Fuck up'. Having said that, he seemed really rattled. The rest of the guys were ready to start the next song well before James and actually began to play. James then looked really pissed, so they stopped and gave him the time to compose himself again. Not quite what you would expect from a Lead Singer in a metal band, but an opera singer maybe!

As far as excellent front-men and excellent singers go, then Andre Matos would be a great choice, though I don't think he would leave Angra. He has a belting voice, bags of energy and knows how to work an Audience. (I can post a gig review if there is enough interest).

How about everyone who titles their posts "RE: Ytsjam 2112" or "RE: Ytsejam 1001001" or any other jam number could try to title thier posts by what they are actually about so those of us who dont have all the time in the world can delete them if we are not interested instead of having to actually read a post about something that we don't care about.

And one more thing, we need a new rule that prevents new subscribers from writing "Hi my name is (Fill in the blank) I'm from (Fill in country or state) and I love Dream Theater and other progressive and metal bands, please write to me." This isnt a fuckin 12-step program.
