Did I see a band called "Therion" appear ????? Excellent German / Polish metal
(I do not like all these different classifications, like Death, Doom, Dark,
Black,...).
On their last album "THELI", they use plenty of choirs and the result is
marvellous ! Their previous album "LEPACA CLIFFOTH" is, I think even better,
though they just use a sopran (is that correct English ?) and a bariton (I
think...).
Just to say, check it out, I am very enthousiastic about it !!!!

Hi, there.
I think that although this list is not a very good place to
discuss what it is intended to discuss, it is a very good place to get a
broad understanding of rock in general. :-) The black metal episode, for
instance, helps to justify my assertion. :-)
But could someone help me with the following definitions and cite
an exemple or two of the following categories (please let me know what
would be the bands that best represent each category)? It seems to be very
controversial (as you may easily notice in earlier jams)... I have seen
people commenting that some band does such and such style and then others
contradicting everything...
- black metal;
- doom metal;
- death metal.
Any more information that I should know?

I was here before that hit (I think I started somewhere around 500, before I took a break for a few months due to e-mail problems) and it's really not a whole lot different than it ever was. There was just more DT content, because the band was doing shit.

Kveldssanger is the folk album that's pretty much acoustic, right? That truly was an amazing album. I have to get my own copy. And I'm now an Opeth and In Flames fan. :)

Good that yuo point this out, because I'm told (by the friend that is pushing Black Metal on me) that Gehennah bites hard. And Blockbuster music doesn't carry this stuff, so I can't listen before I buy!

hey - all you junkies out there (myself included) who are going through withdrawal symptoms waiting for the next DT album: you can ease the pain by checking out this month's Knights of the Round (http://www.knightsofthe round.com) feature artist: Heads or Tails. Judging by the sample clips (which aren't of the highest caliber, but hey), these guys really have their shit together. I don't know if they've been mentioned on the 'jam already, but their sound is akin not only to DT of course, but also Superior, who you should definitely be familiar with by now. Check the sound clips - my prediction is that until we get our DT fix, HoT will do quite nicely.

I thought is was pretty cool to listen the "Enter Sandman" being played by cellos. There were some interesting sounds that I hear including a "grating" sound.

I heard a lot of this band on web reviews. I'm not into black metal, but this one sounds cool. I have _Morningrise_ on order but it hasn't come in yet.

Uh, any of you oldies (you know, the ones who mades us :) remember going to ELP in the 70's? I thought The one I went to was pretty loud and just to make sure everyone would suffer damage, they put speakers in the back of the Civic Center. I remembered hearing they got up around 110db at one show.

Channel surfing yesterday usually right by MTV (as part of SOP, I don't watch it) I noticed a top 500 countdown. They apparently had just started it (mid 400's), but has anyone noticed if DT have made an appearance yet? This is important to me as I have to make a choice as to whether to go shopping for food or fertilizer :)
By the way, Mr. Wendle by Arrested Development was playing and as simple a song as it is, guess what: my head started moving.

Hehe. I'm not sure that anagram is intentional, but I've got something to say about Tate. I personally believe that Tate is one of the best rock vocalists ever to hit the scene. I realize that at the present moment he doesn't have the range he used to have, but the man's 40 years old. I've got a few boots of his early stuff (pre Empire) and I've never been so impressed by a live vocalist. Songs like Screaming in Digital, Neue Regel, Take Hold of the Flame are simply spectacular. Tate in his prime is much more impressive than, say, LaBrie in his prime (IMO). Even on the recent Promised Land tour the setlist is amazingly difficult vocal-wise. Most of Mindcrime (sans Suite Sister Mary), Screaming, Neue Regel, etc etc. While he doesn't have the mind-blowing range he once did, he carries every show off without a hitch, without a crack, without a pause. Though I generally prefer DT (and I'm a huge fan of both bands), I must say that live, at least, Tate blows away LaBrie. If LaBrie got to Tate levels live I think DT would be noticably more popular, and I really wish this would happen. I've really got to hear those European shows. So, if ANYONE ANYWHERE has tapes of the recent Euro mini-tour PLEASE get in touch with me for a trade. Mike Bahr has them, but doesn't have the time to trade. Surely SOMEONE else must have them. :) I've been told that LaBrie was great and I'm desperate for a recent LaBrie show that I don't have to cringe at or make excuses for him for friends that hear my boots of his not-so-great shows. I've been wondering why I've been getting up to 6 'jams a day, and now I know why.
(steps on soapbox) You kids still can't quit flaming each other over which band sucks/rules, whether MTV/MuchMusic sucks/rules, who's grammar is better than who's, and who deserves to be the captain of the Ytsejam Debate Team (debating an issue to the point of absurdity). No wonder several people have left the 'jam in a blaze of glory.
I was recently introduced to several members of the Kansas mailing list, People of the South Wind, and they seemed to be very polite They even invited me to hang out with them (and the band) even though I wasn't a member. I also looked in on their IRC channel, and I was impressed that they weren't cussing each other out or trying to be better than one another. (Get the hint?)
So let's make the Ytsejam more of a community and less of a competition. (steps off soapbox)
