Whoever talked about Therion the other day, I went out and picked up Theli
last night. After two run throughs, it is really good, but not great. I
really dig the choirs and their grand symphonic sound from their keys.
Their vocalist definitely is a death metal vocalist, which I'm really not
into, but the choir gets more time than the vocalist. If you don't like
fantasy type lyrics, you may not like this album either. Here, I think
it works, though, because the keyboard sound really gives things that
ethereal sound necessary for the lyrics. More comments after a few more
listens.
Listening to Magellan after Therion is quite a shock, too.

Damn, hitting the nail on the head! Over half of my new CD
purchases have been jammer recommended stuff. Magellan, Therion, Shadow
Gallery, Altura, Fates, Ivanhoe, Galactic Cowboys, all stuff I've heard
here on the jam. Add Symphony X, Superior, Stratovarius and Angra to
that list, when I get my Credit card balance down, and that is a lot of
stuff I'd never hear about, without input from the jam.

I'd add to that a commanding grasp of jazz that he displays on Karn Evil
9 (2nd impression I believe). He was always know for having an amazing
left hand, something keyboardists tell me is an acheivement.
For those seriously into classical music, they do an interesting
interpretation of "Pictures at an Exhibition" on a live album by the
same name.
I guess the only warning I'd give when listening to is to not expect
Greg Lake's guitar to measure up to JP's. Greg was mainly used for his
vocals and bass. His acoustic guitar worked for me, though.
A lot of people that mention the uniqueness of some of the newer bands'
sounds out there may want to take a look at some of ELP's stuff. You may
find that a lot of it has been done before...

you know, I always thought for some reason that Lars was a
pretentious asshole. I don't know, he just came across that

Anyway, he's kinda right about ND -- they're definitely not a
flash in the pan type band - and they do have good songs on
the newer album, it just might not be in a genre others like.
I saw them in concert when Gwen's voice was rested for like a
month or two, and I was very impressed by them....but that's
just my HO.

Hell, I like techno too! One thing I noticed at the Birch Hill
show (DT content!!! whoohoo!):
When the show was over, my friends and I went to the bar thing
on the side of the Birch Hill. That's where the after-show
stuff was on the "Home for the Holidays" thingy a year before,
so we went in there again hoping DT would be there.....
Anyway, they turned it into a nightclub-type deal with all guidos
and high-haired girls and stuff.....A few people from the
DT show went in as well (Heather was in there, I remember -
we looked at each other like "I DON'T think DT is gonna come
in here this time...."). So there I am, with my Ytsejam shirt
on and a pair of jeans, just sittin' atround drinking....
Anyway, the point is, I think I was the only one from the DT
show that actually went out on the dance floor to actually dance.
The point here is that a lot of people in general enjoy a
specific type of music and stick with that. Some of these
people absolutely do not like anything else, and jump to
conclusion that they suck. s. Others may like other stuff as well, but
still
absolutely would not think of listening to the other genres
of music.
Then again, there are others that equally enjoy all different
genres of music (except country! :P ). The common denominator
on the Jam is that we all like DT, but we should always be open
to suggestions made by other Jammers to music that might not
be "prog" per se. There's SO MUCH good music out there, that
it's a shame that more people don't expand their tastes.....

There are some good bands out there that have female singers.
I happen to think that there some kind of male instinct where
women's voices help relax the male gender somehow. I read that
this was one of the reasons that a female's voice is used in
fighter planes/jets when warning or status messages are said.
Bands with female singers or just female singers that I like
are: Sheryl Crow (some stuff), Natalie Merchant, Tori,
Letters to Cleo ( "pop"py band out of Boston), Mariah (some),
Baby Gopal (another poppy band from NY), Drain (although you
can't tell the singer's female), some old En Vogue, Groove
Theory (R&B-ish), No Doubt, Erykah Badu (jazzy, R&B), hell,
even some Shania Twain stuff I can deal with. And then the
one female voice that makes smoking a pound of pot seem tame -
Anita Baker. I'm sure there's more, but I just can't think of
it -- plus I think my hands are gonna fall off.......
To summarize:
1.) Lars - you're not the dick I thought you were. My bad.
You get some mad propz.
2.) Birch Hill sucks - though the dance music was OK.
3.) "Can't we all just get along?"
4.) Free your mind (to other music), and the rest will follow.
5.) Chickz rock.
6.) Carpal tunnel syndrome blowz.
7.) Memorial Day Weekend! Whooho!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hell, don't have to worry about it. In two months, esp., in ack mode, your mailbox will be so large that they'll take the account away.
When they disab;ed my account for two months. I finally got back onto it, and I had (in ACK mode) over 2500 messages in the mailbox! It was *not* fun trying to deltete them all.....

Ya ! Moonspell is a portuguese band, they are from a city near Lisbon (Brandoa). Before the "Wolfheart" they have a mini-album "Under The Moonspell" and before that they have two or three demo-tapes. There's another portuguese band that you might like - Heavenwood - do you Know them? They have a melodic Gothic Metal. Their album is "Diva". I recommend that. I like Moonspeel (not very much, but I have Wolfheart). If anyone want more informations about this bands, maybe I can help :)

YA! You tell 'em man... Rock on! :) Guess I see what happens when people don't read closely enough to notice a joke when they see one. There were several smileys, a couple of "hehe"'s, and even a disclaimer saying all the above was in my opinion. BUT, in all walks of life (including the Jam very obviously) there are some excessively anal retentive people that feel the need to jump on everything and everyone that differs from them, so I'm used to having to deal with people of that nature. Are all of the old jams archived somewhere? I'd love to see when I actually did join, and it would be easy to recognize, because I asked a ton of questions within my first week on the 'jam, and ended up getting flamed pretty bad. I think the Doc flamed me. Wouldn't surprise me... Does that spark any memories Doc?
Also, when did the jam start? Someone mentioned digest 60 in the spring of '93, but that doesn't sound right to me. And what was the server name before arastar.com?

I bought 2 CDs today,so I'd like to tell ya something about them.
GENERATION SWINE by Motley Crue (88/100) Well,well,well. It seems no-one around the world doesn't care about them anymore after their self-titled album and notorious AMA TV performance. But I used to be a big fan of them (in 80's) so I bought this offering to accept the truth that they're OVER. Yeah, I know the reason why Vince went back to their front spot, "MONEY" (grin). The Record co. said "We don't want to re-deal with Motley without Vince.". That's the truth. Anyway,musically, I like this album. Imagine Pantera's "Far Beyond Driven" and "The Great Southern Trendkill". That's what I thought. That's what this Motley's release. They tried to update them to 1997. But it's in vain. It's 1995 or 1996 music style. The music style they failed in updating really attracted me. I do like this music. So why don't you give them the last chance?
BELIEVE by Harem Scarem (84/100) I was the one who introduced them on this list. This is their 4th effort in the studio. They're absolutely back to their old days. Very melodic song. I'd like to use the word HEART-WARMING. The vox. Harry Hess really has great voice. I'm into Canadian hard rock these days personally. I mean bands like Harem Scarem,Von Groove,Caught In The Act and Total Stranger really rocks. 80s style melodic hard rock (everybody forget them). Well,this opus doesn't nice as their 2nd album titled "Mood Swing". So if you are unfamilliar with them,try "Mood Swing" first.
