Yep, listen to the keyboard sounds that Kevin Moore uses in I&W and you
will find out that those analog sounds were used before.

Anybody moving to Southern CA with hopes of finding a good radio station=
better stay put (even my requests get ignored!). I've lived here all my=
life, and if I'd learned only one thing, it's that CA is one of the=
trendiest states in the U.S of A. Sure, the weather's nice, and the people=
are ok, but it sometimes seems as if there's no need for conformity around=
here. One station here used to have a real whup-ass show called 10-21=
Thrash, where they'd select an album, and play the whole thing during the=
show, along with some other choice tunes (my fave was when they chose=
"..And Justice For All :) ,but not only did the show get axed, but so did=
the DJ! They ended up replacing it with Subject to Change, a 2 hour show=
that showcases nothing but local alt. bands. Shitty, eh? Not that I dont=
like some alternative music, but they just decided to take a perfectly=
good radio station and turn it into a KROQ clone.
Anyhow, I've gotta get goin...
Till next time,

Well, hello happy jammers. I decided to take the day off
of work (Any of you from Maryland know why - I live two
exits before the Bay Bridge off US 50. *You* trying getting
home from work on the Friday before Memorial Day with the
beach traffic swarming!) and was rewarded with a picture
perfect day. Anyway, I was surfin' around on the web, and came
across the HardRadio site, and they have the new Bruce Dickinson
cd in its entirety. I have to say that I am anxiously awaiting
its shipment to me next week. This stuff rocks, from what I can
tell over a 28.8 real audio link. Adrian Smith plays on it, and
Bruce's voice is back on track. Check it out if you are interested.
Here I sit in front of the screen, and for some strange reason I am
listening to King Crimson's Thrak. Why would I do this? I am not sure.
I have owned the cd since it came out and this is just the third time
I have put it in. I guess I just can't get excited over it. It is sorta
interesting, though.
Anyone want to join me in laughing gleefully at Patrick
"We'll really see how ready Detroit is willing to pay the price.
That's what I want to see." Roy??? HA HA HA, you idiot.
So much for the "Dynasty" some list member was touting.

Hello,
Man, Lars... Just when I thought you had loosened and lightened up:
>Okay, let's get something straight here.
This post was way out of hand. It was directed solely at Chris and
should have been sent to him. Come on, spare us the flame bait. Oh, and
just so you all know: I'm a raving hypocrite. Thanks.
>Since we are on the subject, do any of you jammers recall hearing "Plaw

>Adventure"?
Yep, it's on the soundtrack. Along with a ton of bands that never made
it big. The sequel's soundtrack is awesome, though.
On No Doubt:
>They're not exactly a one year-old radio wonder.
Yeah, I know they've been around, but have you noticed that every year
there's a band just like this. For instance: Green Day was around for
years before Longview went big, started playing arenas for $10 a seat
(admirable I must say, keeping tickets low), then the following year,
their new album is released and no one cares anymore. I expect No Doubt
to go the same route.
>it just might not be in a genre others like.
I like the genre No Doubt would purport to be in. Ever hear of Fighting
Gravity? Amazing ska band. I like Dave Matthews and Collective Soul too.
They could also be pegged in with ND. I just think that No Doubt is
mindless and uninteresting, and mostly annoying. But that, like most
else I say, is opinion.
Hey Al, if you really want to get funky, you gotta own some Parliament.
The P-funk is where its at. :)

Welcome to the YtseJam. I also agree that the production on Awake is among
the finest I've ever heard, and better than the production on Images and
Words because the drums were not triggerred on Awake. ACOS is also a
slightly weaker production IMO, but that could be because of the snare
drum. I know that thread has come up a million times, but that piccolo
snare just ruins the song for me.
The new album will NOT be produced by the Awake producers (there were 2 for
Awake, although their names escape me). The new album will be produced by
the same guy who produced Aerosmith's latest album (although his name
escapes me also).

Hell yeah. This was before I was turned into a Maiden freak and I
only heard them once or twice when my brother played the records.
I saw this commercial and the music was maddeningly familiar.
(And way cool too, of course) It drove me nuts! But then I got
into the music and discovered this AWESOME (no kidding!) song.

I don't really know if this has been out here, but it's in my
to-get list, with big red line under it. And after this review I'm
drooliug my head off... And ofcourse I'm totally broke,
and no money to come in the foreseeable future. Well, maybe I'll
go to Mape's and tape all the cd's I want, and wait for better
days to get the discs. ;)
As for Roy Z...
He was in Bruce's second solo album 'Balls to Picasso'. I don't
know much of the technical stuff, but IMO this guy has loads
of (raw?) talent and isn't afraid to try different stuff. To me he
also has an easily distinguished tone, kinda ala Reb Beach.
(I don't really like Winger, but his playing just gives me the
creeps.) In short: I'm glad he's the other guitarist... (Well
maybe Dave Murray would have been a dream come true, but you can't
have everything =)

That list of favorite bands to see live specifically excluded DT, being
that this is the DT list, everyone assumed they would be first and
foremost. I remember seeing the request for such lists, and it explicitly
said 'other than Dream Theater.' This could be the reason they were
excluded. I believe this person is a DT fan, and not just using this list
to promote other prog bands. Calm down.

Shortly after the release of ACOS, I UNsubbed for about a year, and when I
tried to get back on the 'jam, I couldn't find it anywhere. Finally, after
two months of searching (passive searching I might add), someone pointed me

Two things Today.
1) Got the new Enchant Tuesday and after several listens must say I
am quite impressed. Much musical growth from the last one, not
that it wasn't really good IMHO, but this one seems alot more cohesive
and well written. Alot of variety also. Not real heavy though if
thats what you're looking for but if you like like good, I hate to

2) Any of you Jammers going to Megadeath here in Phoenix that want

Hmmm...this one is post-sorting through a dozen digests or so. I get too
damn much mail sometimes....
1) I'm not a big fan of rap music, generally speaking, but it has its strong
points. I rather LIKE some bands that have incorporated the style into
their music...you can find rapping on albums by Living Colour, Faith No
More, Urban Dance Squad (obviously...)...well, this actually could turn into
quite the long list. Remember that Run DMC, for example, already updated
rap that existed in the Aerosmith canon, Rush has done "Roll The Bones," and
our beloved Dream Theater has sampled a little, though James isn't likely to
become MJ James anytime soon, as far as I can tell.
The notion that rap is without pitch and, hence, without melody isn't
exactly accurate. It's the difference, for example, between "perfect pitch"
and "absolute pitch"...being able to hum a note from memory and being able
to hear the overtones created by a running river, for example. That point
aside, sprechstimme, or using a pitched voice, is something that's been used
in "classical" music over the last century or so. Basically speaking, a
voice, even a spoken one, has pitch. Part of how we create coversational
flow is via changes in volume and pitch. Rappers often emphasize these
attributes even more, to create something that is at least somewhat melodic,
if it isn't exactly Placido Domingo or Jessye Norman.
2) No top anything lists, right? Okay. I'll rephrase all of this, couch
it in something else. Contemporary music has brought us a host of good
vocalists. Some personal favorites: Geoff Tate, Ray Alder, David Coverdale,
Linda Thompson. B.B. King always sounds tremendous, though his range isn't
anything to speak of. Geddy Lee's sounded awfully good after the last few
albums, and, prior to "Hold Your Fire" or so, he was certainly an
interesting vocalist. Sam and Dave are always fun for me to listen to.
And, of course, the golden throat of Mr. LaBrie, who, I'd still assert, is
one of the best working.
