Just a couple really quick reviews:
Queensryche- Rage For Order
Yes, I just got the CD and some of it reminds me of Warning while others are
totally experimental which I love. Gonna Get Close To You scared the fuck
out of me- the stalker song...awesome. The Killing Words I have only heard
acoustically previously and the full band version is great although another
scary one. Screaming In Digital and Chemical Youth kick ass too.
Kerrang Sampler Album
Well, don't expect anything gothic on the new Paradise Lost album- the song
on here called Soul Couragious is cool yet just not metal anymore but it
definitely kicks ass. The new Testament song John Doe is pretty cool
although standard Testament. New Motley Crue- I personally don't like it but
thats me- the song was Find Myself. New Faith No More sounds kind of techno
but alright.
On order: Flotsam And Jetsam- High
and of course, Dream Theater- PT and TDOW....

Yeah. She has her normal singing voice and her dolphin voice. Still, I'd
say her range is seriously impressive, particularly for a pop singer, as
they're generally only called on to assemble a melody within an octave or so
and phrase a little bit. If nothing else, she's made an effort.

Myung is a hell of a bassist, obviously. Though my style was pretty well
developed by the time I stumbled across Dream Theater, I will certainly say
he's been an inspiration, if not much of an influence.
On the other hand, I rather like Sarah McLaughlin. Of course, I'm more
inclined to folkier music than most of the other people here, as witness my
predilection for Dar Williams. I also think the world of Leo Kottke and
Simon and Garfunkel and John Fahey...and a whole bunch of other folks who,
generally speaking, fall into some category in that part of the musical
universe. Sarah McLaughlin isn't THAT high up my totem pole, but I
certainly don't agree with your assessment of her music as "crap."

Yep. As a Long Beach (California) expatriate, I can verify that one. KLOS
did that for years (for all I know, they still might, they did it up until I
left in 1994). They played all kinds of albums, generally in a classic rock
vein, generally pretty good stuff. Lots of Rush, of course...Zeppelin,
Floyd, Genesis, Cream. Pretty standard issue stuff, though, again, towards
the end of my time living in the LA Basin, they were also playing R.E.M. and
the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

play full metal CDs late at night. I just heard one the other night. I
think it was Pantera's CFH or something.

DT content...
2 weeks to JP's B-day...
I honor all my influences by not playing on their birthdays. And in the
case of Randy Rhoads & Criss Oliva, the days they died. I still do my
theory studies, I just don't look at a guitar for those 24 hrs.
Everyone's been listing top 5 vocalists. So, as a guitarist...
My top 5 guitarists w/reasons why: (in order)
===========================
1> Randy Rhoads (Precision - The best ever)
2> Criss Oliva (Speed & power - Beyond belief)
3> John Petrucci (Finesse - Shred's crown prince)
4> Frank Gambale (The God of sweep-picking)
5> Liona Boyd (No comment...the name is synonymous with classical guitar)
These are lean times for fans of bands like DT, Savatage and the like. I
believe the faithful's patience will be rewarded...metal will rise to
prominence again. Wait-n-c.
These are only opinions..."discussions" by e-mail welcome.

The host was "uncle" Joe Benson.
Reply... I was in grad school in the larger LA area for a number of years,
and taped many a CD off the air (in my poor mode), although my most
treasured of recording are the series of U2 'Wilde' compilations of
rare/import/B side U2 songs. One of the other DJ's is/was an avid collector
of U2 music, and she let Uncle Joe make the compilations, which were aired
about the times that a U2 tour was in the area. I got a lot of
next-to-impossible-to-find early U2 music

Hey gang -
Just a quick one for anyone out there who can help...
I've been reading from time to time people raving about Symphony X "Divine
Wings of Tragedy". Can anyone offer up a review as to what they, or at least
this album, sound like? Lately, I've been on a "Euro-speedmetal" kick after
discovering Angra, Gamma Ray, and Stratovarius. (Thanx, Jason! :-) ) Does
Symphony X sound like these guys? I'm waiting for my 2 Angra CD's to be sent
to me (I've only heard "Carry On" and loved it), and I have "Land Of the
Free" by G.R. and "Episode" by Strat, in case people wanna use those as a
point of reference. Oh yeah, I've heard that the latest Stratovarius blows
away "Episode". Is this true?
Thanx, Jammerz.... Matt T.

Hi Dan.
Each of the Queensryche shows will be opened by a local act so it might
very
well be Dream Theatre. We are waiting for a full list of all the
confirmed
opening acts, but the best thing to do is check with the venue and the
local
radio station supporting it.
All the best.

Actually, I just recieved my Symphony X!. I heard it before, but just
revieved DWOT. I think it smokes so far!...The question I have for
other people is, is Michael Romeo the Big Hefty looking guy on the
band picture??? I'm just wondering because usually the guitar hero's
are lanky and skinny looking. No offense to Michael if that is him. I
think it's great!!!!!!! It's just that I have a friend who is about
his size(if that is him), and although I think he's great, he doesn't
think he will ever be that good because of his size. I know it
doesn't make any sense, but I think it's because he's seen too many
guitar hero's with the same size and shape.......By the way, for
those who haven't heard Michael Romeo's playing, THE MAN SHREDS!!!!!!
He is up there with the best of them that's for sure!!!!!!!!!!

YES! This is absolutely correct.
I'll admit, it is amazing to listen to her, but it gets really old really
fast. And I STILL don't believe that she has a six octave range.

Cool. What kind of voice? What kind of music does he do? I'd like to
hear him.

In fact, no.
There are 5 registers of the human voice: vocal fry <or the pulse
register>, chest register, head register, falsetto, and whistle tones.
What Mariah Carey does is called whistle tones. In this register, the
vocal folds are very close together and so tense that when the air goes
through them the sound is that of actual whistling of the folds. This
tension gives her the high notes, but it is also what has killed her head
register. <The falsetto in females is so small that it is hardly ever
used.> Most of the rest of her singing is in the chest register. She
does have head voice, but she can't give it any power or she'll crack into
whistle tones, so she has to belt it out in chest voice. Vocal fry is the
sort of "clicking" noise that your voice makes when you are tired or
something. That involves the vocal folds being tense all around the
edges, but loose in the middle, thus making the sound that you hear the
actual pulses of the vocal folds, like the buzzing of the lips as if to
play a brass instument. The differences between the other registers are
the subject of much debate in the legit voice training world, so I will
not get into them here.
In legitimate, Bel canto singing the soprano should have about two
and a half octaves, tenors <an octave lower, of course> the same or
slightly less. A baritone's range should be comparable to the tenor <only
a minor third lower>, or slightly less. Basses usually have the high
notes equivalent to baritones <but can get away with slightly less>, just
extending lower. The Mezzo-soprano voice is by far the most elusive, with
some mezzos having three usable octaves. You haven't lived until you've
hear a mezzo sing Schubert's "Der Tod und Das Maedchen" and sing the low d
at the end. Woah.
