If you find the resonance frequency of the glass (by getting the glass to
'sing' by rubbing a finger on top of it), play this frequency (it's not
likely to be a 'clean' note, it might be a few cents off pitch) through
your stereo (your amps and speakers must be able to handle this frequency
    with minimum distortion), CRACK !!!

    > Helloween
"Keeper of the Seven Keys Pt. I"

Helloween is awesome. 80% awesome, at least. Which is a lot in my book.

    > Helstar
"Nosferatu" <-- The BEST album mankind has ever known. Words cannot
    decribe :-)
One of my top ten in my 500+ collection.

Hmm. Maybe I'll have to go back and listen to it... I tried a few
times, but it sounded too dated and like standard generic prog-metal
for me to get into it.

    > In Flames
"The Jester Race" My new love second to HELSTAR....magical!!

Yeah. I picked this up last week. The music is awesome, swinging from
thrash to beautiful prog-metal (and a lot of acoustic interludes
thrown in) and back. Be warned, it does have "cookie-monster" vocals,
which I don't normally like, but they are low enough in the mix that
it really fits the music. About the only other bands with similar
vocals that I can stand to listen to are Death, Moonspell, and Therion
(well, the last two vary the vocal styles throughout, so I find it
    interesting).

    > Leviathian
            "Deepest Secrets Beneath"

Like Nosferatu, I think this has really good music, but it sounds
too "standard" to me. Perhaps, as it's been sitting for a while, I'll
give it another spin. Maybe it's the production...

    > Mastermind
            "Volume II - Brainstorm"

Definite must get. I only have the first album besides this (though
I plan on getting the lates two when I get around to it). It is too
bad that I was leaving my "Yes/ELP" prog faze when I got this a few
years ago, or I'd love it more, but it is an excellent combination of
'70s style prog and metal. I like it better than the first one, as
this has those "long-songs" that a lot of us here like !^)> It is
    pretty heavy.

And to anyone here recommending like music, *please* tell what type
of vocals they have. Except for the above that I mentioned, I have
been turned off by some recommendations here for that reason.

And *this*, kids, is what this list has been for from the beginning.
    Oh, and also Dream Theater.

I got Precious Things last week, and I think this is my
favorite Mike B. Production, and I have all of the DT ones,
the Metallica one and the first Rush one. Bravo!

I don't believe the first Ytsecon happened until 1995. Awake came out in
Oct. 1994, and I thought it preceeded the first ytsecon. I could be wrong.
    KAI
ps. I think I joined right after you Mike, sometime in late '93. I can
distictly remember seeing Eric Moegling's 'key of Z - circle of fifths'
signature file, and I think he's still around.

Yep. I joined in Oct. '93... saw an advertisment on a.m.r,
just after I got my 'net access.

Also, when did the jam start? Someone mentioned digest 60 in the spring of
'93, but that doesn't sound right to me. And what was the server name
    before arastar.com?

... does _anyone_ remember? Was it on the first ytsejam shirt?
I still have it somewhere, it is much faded. Yeah, and I remember
Chris Oates. Didn't you used to be stmpyjcat or something? Or was
that someone else. If so, then I met you at the IAW concert in
SFO in '93 or '94, whenever it was. Now we old-schoolers can
give ourselves a huge pat on the back for sticking around here
for soooo long. I remember it took forever to get to digest 100.

Anybody moving to Southern CA with hopes of finding a good radio station=
better stay put (even my requests get ignored!). I've lived here all my=
life, and if I'd learned only one thing, it's that CA is one of the=
trendiest states in the U.S of A. Sure, the weather's nice, and the people=
are ok, but it sometimes seems as if there's no need for conformity around=
here. One station here used to have a real whup-ass show called 10-21=
Thrash, where they'd select an album, and play the whole thing during the=
show, along with some other choice tunes (my fave was when they chose=
    "..And Justice For All :

Hey, you forget the rest of the state! I've seen Bay Area radio
kind of go apesh*t in the five years I've been stuck here, but
93 Rock in Sacramento is still the most kick-ass station I've
heard anywhere, and I've been quite a few places around the States.
It still isn't as good as it was when I was in high school in the
'80s though. At least KSJO is doing the "Lost '80s Weekend" here.
            It's rad.

Hey, did I miss something? I can't believe no one's mentioned
Superior's Michael Tangermann yet. Go listen to Tainted Silence again!

I think that dude's better than anyone that has been
mentioned so far. More listenable than Tate, IMO. And
I love Tate. (yeah! "Can't Live W/out You" from the Scorp's
            is on the radio!)

And thanks, Joe Kruger... for clarifying some things. We
could have used one of your Y&J deals here recently, no?
Well, the list should be a bit better for the summer.

And as how the 'jam used to be, the s/n ratio *really*
dropped when ACOS came out. That was a major change, and
            it has never gone back.

    Hello all,

Well, since I'm finally caught up on my jams I thought I'd respond
    to a couple of posts.

    Scott <skooc@earthlink.net> writes:
    >HELP!!!!
    >NO radio stations around here broadcast the QR show from New Mexico.

According to http://www.mcs.net/~ryche this show is scheduled for
    June 5. Don't panic just yet. :)

    Scott Cook writes:

    >>According to the Rush FAQ, the way the band came up with the title
    >>was by the song's length on vinyl -- 21 minutes and 12 seconds long.

    >If you want me to I can pull out the vinyl and add the times up, but
    >I'm 1,000,000 sure that the song is *not* 21:12.

Yeah, I'm sure too. The Rush FAQ has had this clearly incorrect
entry for a long time. My theory is that on my vinyl, it doesn't
have a track time listed, just "Rush 2112" so maybe the FAQ writer/
contributor inferred the time as 21:12. Maybe they took that Passage to Bangkok
one too many times too. :)

By the way, the Houston show rocked on Sunday. :) Only disappointment was my
fiancee and I both wore ytse, but no acknowledgements from anyone. We didn't
    hang around afterwards
    though.

Have to agree with your assessment of this dude, he definitely is "goofy". I
saw Nitro years ago and it was a total bomb. I loved watching Michael Angelo
(nice name...) totally burn up and down his fretboard - especially the cool
doubleneck. The crowd didn't seem to be into them and they actually got booed
when Gillette started doing his glass-shattering schitck. Very impressive
stuff, but it didn't make up for their lack of material.

    GO WINGS!!!

    Hello,
The Lost World sucked, IMHO. The last fifteen minutes were great, but
the hour and a half leading up to that wasn't worth it. It was really
just the same effects as the first one, but more of them and no real
    story. Big whoop.
Got eight CDs for $30 on Saturday! Woo-hoo! I got Prunella Scales (I
know you've never heard of them), Type O Negative "Bloody Kisses", Fear
Factory "Demanufacture", two Earl Klugh discs, Miles Davis and Quincy
Jones live, John Coltrane, and Pat Metheny and John Scofield. And of
course I'm packing up my stereo to move, so I won't hear them until I
unpack it in two months when I get to my new home of Charleston, SC.
On Type O, is their latest (October Rust) a little more "keys heavy"? I
liked the song with keys the most (Christian Woman, Black Number One)
and would like to hear more. Private mail please, Type O was beaten to
death on the Jam before (and I regret not reading it all now). The Fear
Factory disc is pretty cool. I didn't know they were so freaquin' heavy!
I'm dying for Ozzfest now (Giants Stadium). Hey Al, are you going?
Prunella Scales features former members of Saigon Kick and Skid Row
along with some other guys. It's pretty close to "skater punk" but has
some good stuff on it. I doubt many of you Jammers would like it though.
Picking up my copy of the widescreen remaster of Dune today. Just
finished the book for the first time and I wasn't impressed really. I
remember liking the movie as a kid though. But that was ten years ago...

Getting ready for the little move before the big move,

    Ytsejammers:

A friend of mine (w/o Internet access) asked me if I could find a few
tracks in chord/tab notation (he plays keyboards as well as guitar). I
managed to find Ytse & Erotomania (most of it), but couldn't find CIAW.
I checked the DT FAQs as well as about six different search engines but
the best I could do was OLGA, which is great but doesn't have CIAW
(though it does have a bunch of good DT stuff). If you know of any
places where I could get him this stuff, let me know directly via e-mail
or by posting or on Gretchen Goes to the Internet (King's X list) as I
am a GGTTI subscriber. Thanks in advance!

There's an answer to this, I believe, and here's my thought(s) on the subject.

When you have a progressive band like DT performing live, they are
perfectionists. They want everything to go smoothly, and for the most part,
    it does. The feelings and
emotions are in the performance ... they are putting their all into the
    show, as it should be.

I know myself, more than once, have sensed my audience not paying
attention or whatnot. Though I don't show it, it's frustrating because I'm
    putting all my energies into
the show and into the moment on stage. Nothing else matters to me, and my
band, than to give the audience a good show ... a memorable show, and
making them want to see us again.

Though slightly unprofessional, I believe James is letting his anger show
to the "unattentive" fans. He's putting all efforts into the show, and a
few people are not getting into the music. (Please, feel free to point out
    any errors I am making)

I believe this is the case, though it's largely speculative because I
haven't seen or heard the shows in question. Our old singer actually walked
off stage one night because of these circumstances. Needless to say, we
fired him later that night. :-)

Starting a thread is unintentional, but if this does, so be it.

      Laterness...

Interesting. I would recommend "Holy Land", but I appear to be in the
minority on that. I love AC, but it's not as varied.

    >> At the Gates
    > "Slaughter of the Soul"
    >> Blind Guardian
    > "Tales From the Twilight World" (again, recent stuff is great!)

Hands down I would say "Imaginations From The Other Side" - a brilliant
blend of power, melody, and great production values.

    >> Crimson Glory
    > "Transcendence"

If you don't own this, run out the door and BUY IT NOW. Actually, if you
can get both the S/T and this, I'd say get these FIRST. Two of the best
    - great songs, great vocals, great melodic playing - what more can you
    ask?

    >> Dissection
    > "Storm of the Light's Bane"
    > ELDRITCH
    > "Seeds of Rage" (prog-metal at its finest....another must buy.
    >Wonderful keyboard/guitar duel shredfest..good

    >> Elegy
    > "Supremacy" (total shredfest w/ these guys. Horrible lyrics but
    >amazing musicianship. All albums are similar..harmonized
    >shredding w/ sappy lyrics. I LOVE 'em!
    >> Gamma Ray
    > "Land of the Free" (amazing speed/power)..perfect album when driving
    >90mph!
    >> Helloween
    > "Keeper of the Seven Keys Pt. I"
    >> Helstar
    > "Nosferatu" <-- The BEST album mankind has ever known. Words cannot
    >decribe :-)
    > One of my top ten in my 500+ collection.
    >> In Flames
    > "The Jester Race" My new love second to HELSTAR....magical!!
    >> Leviathian
    > "Deepest Secrets Beneath"

"Riddles, Questions, etc." is pretty damnn good too, but I agree here.

    >> Skyclad
    > "Prince of the Poverty Line"
    >> Startovarious
    > "Episode"
    >> Symphony X
    > If you don't own these guys by now, make it your first priority (after
    >you get HELSTAR of course!) Start w/ "Divine Wings of Tragedy"
    >> Tiamat
    > "Wildhoney"

I would say "Clouds". Not as melodic, but very powerful - I think
"Wildhoney" gets too trippy for it's own good...

    >> Watchtower
    > "Control and Resistance" (make sure you are sitting down when you hear
    >this!)

Yeah, this is a roller coaster ride, that's for sure. WT take an open
mind to really like, and are still the most complicated metal band I've
ever heard (and yes, I've heard Siege's Even).

    >> Mastermind
    > "Volume II - Brainstorm"

I like "Tragic Symphony" better - I think the style is less derivative.

    >> Magellan(sp?)
    > "Hour of Restoration"

I had to put my $.02 in on some of these, being the opinionated person I
am. I don't post a lot, but I agree - I think a lot of people on the
'jam might like these bands, so even if this post has zero DTC...

    >
    >--just got orchestra seats for QUEENSRYCHE at Jones Beach (7/30)!!!
    >Fookin' A!

I saw them from the third row here in VA on the Promised Land tour -
totally awesome! You're in for a treat...

I had my mind blown here in the DC area by turning on my car radio at
about midnight on Sat. and having 98Rock play "The Number Of The Beast"!
Not during any kind of metal show, either! Of course, these guys play
"One" and "Pull Me Under" a lot, too... (Hey, I did get some DTC in
    here, after all!)
