Further, this >excerpt of the '89 show is also found on a boot called "Afterlife/Early >Fantasy" with one extra track.

I'm not sure this is correct. Consciously Unreal has 5 songs with Charlie; Metropolis, Afterlife, Ytsejam, TLF, and The Killing Hand. There's no guitar solo (unless you count the beginning of TKH) and there's no OaMoT. This setlist doesn't match the one above, so unless Tim mistyped it, it's not the same set. They could, however, be segments from the same show, in which case we might just want to try to track down the entire show. I would like to hear a boot with Charlie doing Status Seeker, OaMoT, and anything else that he sang live.

Kuba shoved his "subjective" opinions down our throats as if they were facts. The word "opinion" kinda implies that other people are allowed to feel differently. Kuba's "opinion" didn't leave much room for that. Basically, if you didn't agree with his "opinion", you must be stupid. That's not how opinions work.

I would venture to guess that the lounge version isn't going to be there, simply because it's not DT playing. My guesses (standard disclaimer applies - they're just guesses) would include something live from the Fix tours. Almost definitely CIA9ITG, and maybe one or two other things. Then maybe those songs you've been hearing in set breaks, and who knows, maybe another cover.

    Just my guesses. -d

    >Someone mentioned >him being "the silent man" and he became embarrassed, and I got the feeling >that this irritates him. FYI, you might want to avoid mentioning it.

I've often wondered this myself. I'm quite an introvert myself, and freely admit it, however it still kind of annoys me when my friends actually say it to my face. =) It makes me even more self-conscious, because I know that if I do anything that doesn't fit this mold, then people will notice even more, so I just stay quiet. Kind of a vicious cycle...

Anyway, I've always thought that I'd be a bit annoyed if everyone called me the silent man, and I've often wondered if Myung would feel the same way...

    Jim

P.S. Great concert reviews everyone! Keep 'em up!

While I'm thinking about it, here are a couple of bands that have female vocals that you may want to check out.

Finneus Gauge: one of the bands to come out of the breakup of echolyn, FG retains a lot of the echolyn sound (due to Chris Buzby's keys). But one of the things that keeps them sounding fresh is Laura Martin's voice. She sings almost completely unlike anyone else I've heard sing. Very beautiful, powerful voice, but she does stuff to melodies that I can't even explain. You *must* pay attention while listening to this stuff. Check out http://www.ghostland.com/finneus.html for more info and how to order "More Once More."

Animal Logic: All I know about this band is that at one time they kicked ass. I have no idea if they even exist anymore. Stanley Clarke on bass (muh), Stewart Copeland (ex-Police) on drums, and Deborah Holland (I don't know either) on vox, with a bunch of guest guitarists and keyboard players and string players and such. THIS IS NOT PROG, AND IT'S NOT HEAVY. But if you find yourself in the mood every now and then for some really sweet melodies and jazzy pop tendencies, coupled with Copelandesque drums and a bass player that leaves you unable to say much but "muh," then this is the band for you. I know they have at least two albums out. I only have "II", but I've been assured that the first one is also very enjoyable. Good luck finding it, though.

Then there are the couple of tracks on "Victor" that are sung by Dalbello. She's got a set of pipes, and a kickass attitude.

    Happy hunting! -d

On the topic of female singers, I don't know if anyone mentioned the band Crisis. Crisis is death metal with a female singer and it is the funniest thing I have ever heard. I am not a fan of the growling vocals but this is quite unique. She actually changes from screeching to singing to growling in the same line! I don't have the CD, but the 2 songs I have heard I didn't actually mind at all. I may pick it up eventually, but it is not number one on my list, but maybe there is someone here who would want to give it a try.

On the topic of obscure bands, has anyone here heard of Mind Bomb? They are not prog. I have heard them called Alterna-metal. I don't really see where they get the Alternative from except that their use of synthesizers gives it a bit of an industrial feel. It was Columbia House or something so they were just using buzz words to sell it. Anyway, they just have a self titled album and an EP with 4 versions of one of their songs on the LP. And I don't think that they are made anymore. You'd have to check out the used CD stores on this one if interested. If anyone knows anything about what this band or any members are doing now, let me know.

Well, I'm really busy right now and quite depressed (I guess I need a girlfriend to share love, happiness, some good moments --- I've been told that the true happiness one finds by himself, but what if I can't even concretize the desire of having someone at my side?) so I haven't posted to the 'jam as I used to.

BTW, to everyone with whom I had trades going, I will be sending your stuff until this Saturday. I'm sorry for the problems. I will also reply when I have some time.

BTW2, D-Man, I'm working on the Caseliner for Unix. It will be part of a program that will maintain a database for trades and as a module, you'll be able to print the contents of a tape on your printer (I had to implement something for a Databases class which I'm attending). I don't remember if I replied to your ealier mails and I had some problems here with hard disk crashes (isn't technology great? It makes you waste even the time you don't have).

BTW3, wouldn't it be nice if Dream Theater did a complete cover of that song by that "sellout" band that I like a lot (Damage, Inc. & Metallica). All the versions that I have aren't sung or only have those horrible growls by Barney Greenway (you know, the Ronnie Scott's Uncovered). I would really love to hear James (LaBrie, not Jaymz :-) ) singing this song with his "Awake"/angry type of voice.

BTW4 :-), I haven't heard ReLoad yet. And I don't know why we can't have reviews of Metallica albums. When I joined this mailing list, "A Pleasant Shade of Gray" had just been released and the 'jam was flooded with reviews and that long acronym that I tried to figure out during at least 2 days (it was very hard to see the full title of the album/song spelled out in its entirety --- people here seem to like acronyms :-) ). Why can't we discuss a band that OOOFB :-) has declared to be one of their major influences? Just because some people here can't stand those Hammet soloes, but would love to be able to cite Friedman as an influence?

You know, for each, their own.

BTW5, I'd really love to have the eletric version of "The Silent Man" on the DTIFC CD. Other variations of their songs such as the industrial version of "Caught in a Web" (I think it is called "Caught it 9 Inch Tool Garden", or something like it) would be cool also. The extended version of Metropolis (again with those outros by those "sellout" bands, U2 and Metallica).

    BTW6, I guess I'll enter the AAAAA.

Let the flames begin (man, it is really nice to be able to filter mail...). Seroussi will be the first to flame me (I know, it happened before :-) ).

    See you later, Roger...

Did I hear my name? Yeah, I'll stuck up for Chris here... I think 'Idiot' is probably the one thing you can't call someone on this mailing list. I Would venture to say that we're all reasonably intelligent, and (although we failed spelling and grammer in high school) we're all capable of having semi-intelligent conversation. Yeah, Chris is an asshole... ;) but then, so am I, so is everyone else on the list, and so are you. It comes with our elitist love for Prog music (which is superior to all other music, in case you missed the discussion) that causes us to get big-headed and angry when someone contradicts us. . . nothing to be done. Just sit back and enjoy the flame wars.. . So much could be avoided if people would just post polite responses, and _clarifications_ instead of attacks... for example, if Chris P had said "Sorry, I think you missed the tone of my last post. I was trying to say. . . blah blah blah", we wouldn't have the next big flame that'll hit in the next jam. .. but then, it wouldn't be the Ytsejam if that happened, eh? And I wouldn't be having so much fun watching the email battles...
