Perhaps this is proof that DT puts a lot of feeling into their
music and do not just have a 70 minute wank fest on their albums:

I do not play an instrument, and I have very limited musical knowledge.
What attracted me to DT? It was the images that the music conjured up in
my head as I listened.. it was the feelings and emotioned it inspired, it
was the surreal atmosphere. Perhaps they use extremely complex riffs or
whatever, but it is apparent to me that they are using them in the correct
fashion to convey their feelings.. they aren't losing anything by
    "overplaying".

time to return to my hole:

    Hello, all!

It's that time of the year again. It's time to pick your top 5
releases of the year. Last year we had over 300 people from the ytsejam
who picked their favorites and i hope to have that many responces this time.

            DIRECTIONS:

email me (either respond to this or email me at the address
below) with your top 5 CD's of 1997. THIS MEANS: the cd MUST have been
released in 1997. Any Mike Bahr CD released in 1997 counts. Hell, ANY
CD counts - but it has to have been released this year.

Send them to me with the subject: ytsejam top 5 - and we'll be
    on our way.

            HOW THE SCORES WORK.

You send your top 5 IN ORDER of how you want them. For every 1st
place vote, that CD gets 5 points. For 2nd place, 4 point, and etc. For
example, this is what I picked for last year's top 5:

            1. I Mother Earth - Scenary And Fish
                    (this got 5 points)
            2. Tool - Aenima
                    (this got 4 points)
            3. Rush - Test For Echo
                    (this got 3 points)
            4. Lemur Voice - Insights
                    (this got 2 points)
            5. Swamp Terrorists - Killer
                    (this got 1 point)

seem easy? it is! so, send your choices away.

THIS WILL BE VALID UNTIL DECEMBER 31, 1997.

Hey...thanks for the info on Peruvian Skies...cool.

I guess JP did not know Vanessa was full of shit when he wrote
and DT subsequently recorded the song!

I guess that gives "Liar by day" a whole new meaning for this
    song... 8^)

Why do you assume that? It's certainly fathomable that he knew the entire
story, and the lyrics would still make sense. The "Liar by day" line
actually seems to prove that he knew the whole story. "Poor Venessa" might
be a sarcastic remark, meaning she has it so bad because her dad won't let
her stay out all night - poor baby. Just my thoughts. To whoever posted
    the story, thanks.

For jazz drummers, let me add one more....Roy Haynes. He is a tiny drummer
    >who plays with Chick Corea band.

Sorry, but you forgot one of the best Jazz drummers of all times: Steve Gadd.
He's not only a jazz drummer, but when he plays jazz he kicks azz! :)
If you want to listen to him check this Chick Corea's album: "Three Quartets".
    That's it.

I have to disagree, though all these guys are great, the best jazz drummer
that ever lived, was Buddy Rich. That is IMO and the opinion of a large
number of professional drummers, including the infamous Neil Peart, who's
    influence greatly affects Mike Portnoy.
Buddy Rich has totally affected the way I play today. I bought his book
when I was 12 and learned to play drums to it (he died that year) all of
the rudiments that he exclusively used were outlined in this book. If you
are a drummer I recommend this book. It's called "Buddy Rich's Modern
Interpretation of Snare Drum Rudiments" I still use this book today.

3 or 4 notes per string at that speed. I max out around 180 for 2
notes per string, and about 160 for 1 note per string. I spend way
too much time on that stuff! Of course, that doesn't mean it sounds

It's also possible that the stories have nothing to do with each
other, or were fictional, and any similarity is purely coincedence,
and Elektra/Warner takes no legal responsibility.... :)
Dunno. Merlo? Another question you get to ask Portnoy! Aren't you

In addition to those, I'd suggest _Just a Game_, which is a fantastic
album. It shows a great deal of variety on the part of guitarist Rik
Emmett. Their live album, _Stages_, is also pretty good and has a good
sampling of stuff from various albums.

ToT does end with a bas solo -- from 12:05 all the way to 12:30 or so is a
Myung solo. For a bass player, that may as well be the end of the song,
because it kicks much ass and the rest is coda-style fadeout.

    I won't argue the stick point yet -- I can't hear it eaither. ^_^

Well, I haven't heard anyone mention it so I'll go ahead.....pardon me
    if I'm wrong....
I found a new 2CD bootleg today titled "Small Club Adventure" taped in
April of 1997 in Amsterdam. this marvelous piece of work contains (pretty
much) the Fix for '96 setlist because it has the demos of BMS, PS, TAMP, and
stuff...but it also has Met with Discotheque and One mixed in!!
The sound quality is absolutely fabulous....dare I say close to the DOE??
the crowd is relatively quiet except for right in the beginning.....Labrie
actually asks what the crowd took because they're so quiet....
Anyway to make a long story longer, this boot kicks ass. It's been so
long since the Fix shows that BMS with the HK intro sounded weird. Anyways....

any other questions feel free to email me.....

a return to my Jr. High school years again! I miss the music from that
era, I don't miss the image.. but nonetheless, the music fucking rocked! I
wait in anxious anticipation of the return of the POWER BALLAD!! I thought
I was going to get one with TAMP, but that got changed quick :( Oh well,
scrutinize me all you want. I love the 80's. Thanks to my buddy Tony for

    Message-ID: <199711260029.AA28835@crl.crl.com>

..and contains initial, tentative plans, directions to the Masquerade
and a list of those who are coming (so far).

    http://www.crl.com/~vanyel/ytses.html

Also included are some thoughts on gathering for the Fates show two
    days earlier.

Gee, if Fates linger in town for a day after their show and DT leave
directly for Atlanta from Philly, both bands could actually be within
the metro Atlanta area on the same day.

The resulting earthquakes, cataclysms and Chaos-storms might crack the
Earth's crust, and with any luck, topple 96rock's tower since they
don't think progressive metal is cool. :)

Even though 96rock won't mention either show on the air or much less
PLAY anything by either band, I plan to announce both shows during
WREKage, 10pm-2am WREK-FM 91.1. And we'll play something by both bands,
too. There is a RealAudio feed for the station at www.gatech.edu/wrek
(I think). I'll probably be arriving a bit late as I'll be at the David
Arkenstone show (shaddup :)) that evening. It'll be quite a contrast
to our usual WREKage radio fare (Cryptopsy, Dismember, At The Gates,
    Dissection, Slayer, etc. :))

Hey folx, this is to any of you who attended the Chance show in Poughkeepsie:

I'm interested in hearing your review, opinions, comments or whatever about the show, and welcome them sent to my personal email so as not to clutter the 'jam. I'd like to know about DT of course, but also the crowd, the hall or club itself, and anything unique that happened. Email it to buster@ee.net if you feel like it.

Thanks in advance!!! buster http://users1.ee.net/buster http://www.dhpc.com/ryche/
