I'm sure a zillion people will post about the actual show, so I'll just say
that the show was amazing. The best part for me was during the encore when
everyone swapped instruments and launched into "Perfect Strangers", probably
because I got closer to the stage.

IRVING PLAZA itself was awesome. Plenty of room and they didn't try to jam
as many people in as possible (a la the Birch Hill - where I couldn't even get
up past the staircase). A sold out show and there was plenty of room to
    spare!

    Hi

I just wondering, if Rush's Fly By Night is a good album to buy ?

I have heard all Rush album's since 1988 and don't like them very much.

The live album A Show Of Hands is good. I like also their album from 1993,
    which includes Animated (Co...).

I can get Fly By Night (digital remastered) very cheap and want to know,
    if it's a good album ?

I have "The Graveyard" and it is excellent, although I hear from people that it is his
worst. I plan on getting "The Eye" next because the concept sounds cool and I have heard
some people say it's their favorite. I haven't heard "Abigail" yet. When you get an
album, if you are ok with the vocals, then I suggest trying a Mercyful Fate (King
Diamond's other band) album. I have "Into the Shadows" and alot of the songs on there are
simply amazing. The Room with Golden Air is a beautiful instrumental, and Is That You,
Melissa? is a wonderful chilling ballad. Plus this cd has Return of the Vampire with Lars
    Ulrich as guest drummer.

    "Mysteries".
The way James sings that word in the last verse of LITS, after the song kept
building up for hours (or so it seems to me) brings me close to collapsing
    everytime I listen to it.
"And the *mysteries* we nurture, are the fabrics of our lives"

I still can't understand why they keep playing that song as opener. It's just
too intense to play it that early, but nobody listens to me...

The UK 'metal' press is obsessed with those bands with
female members - Coal Chamber, Tura Satana, etc, but
when it comes to all-female metal bands, the UK is in a
class of its own - Girlschool eventually earned some
grudging respect after years on the circuit, but current fare
like Rockbitch and now Tampasm leave me reaching for the
    sick bucket!

    Check out:

They're young, there not particularly good looking, they sing
lots of songs about having sex and guess what, they've got
a recording contract. Look out, they're the heavy metal Spice
    Girls!!

    | Kickass. Some people say I'm good, but my "I can play crap" is part of a
    | more generalized "I suck at everything" attitude I have...I've felt this
    | inadequacy thing my whole life, for at least one BIG reason I know....
    +------

Urk... yes, I've had to kinda re-live an obviously similar pattern w/
several respects, too... e.g. I also thought I was such a lousy academic
until I ended up w/ a research grant of my own... still worse in more
    personal matters...

I only can hope that you will be able to replace these experiences
gradually w/ really positive ones :-)

    +------
    | Uhmmm, maybe, but I think it has more to due with the unsettling
    | one-more-than-6 effect. Most "normal" music-listeners (read: people who
    | know next to nothing or absolutely nothing about music) find odd time
    | signatures hard to keep a tapping foot steady to.
    +------

<hehehe> They only have to do it for 2 bars instead of just 1 :-)

(Hope this also helps to clarify things w/ those who still are trying to
fathom my remark on Watchtower :-)))

    +------
    | Yay! Someone who doesn't like to be stared at by bunches of judgmental
    | people.... :}
    +------

Well... in a way I got over it by thinking like most of the audience won't
understand what I'm doing anyway, or to quote Alphonso Johnson "In case I
make a mistake I'll simply do it again so everyone will be thinking I've
    done it on purpose..." :-)

    +------
    | Hmm, if anyone TOUCHED my guitar without my permission I swear to my DT
    | signatures and my p2 266 that I would literally beat the shit out of them
    | (ahhh, heavy boots and fast kicks!). I ALWAYS play with the door closed,
    | and I find it really hard to play either the oboe OR the guitar with ANYONE
    | watching. I get really tense. Fortunately for my formal performance
    | career, I've been better about relaxing when I play oboe...but that's not
    | what I'll talk about here. Another problem for me is that I hang around
    | with some really amazing guitarists who have been playing for near 10
    | years. I've been playing like almost one and a half. Is this a fair
    | comparison? Not really, but I can't get over the fact that I suck in
    | comparison to them, so I obsess about it...plus, as I said before, I
    | already have a general "I suck" sort of philosophy.
    +------

Nah... this really isn't any such thing as fair... and I don't have the
impression you generally suck, believe me :-)

I know another guitar player, whose name also is Erica :-), who has started
to play only like 7 or 8 years ago, and she's 29 now and has become real
    good...

Oboe is great... I ADMIRE YOU!!!! I've never managed to learn to play this
    one... :-|

    +------
    | Oh MAN, I couldn't even work up the nerve to ASK. I'd DIE to study with
    | him...even though it would be pointless to die...oh well hehe. Figures of
    | speech never hurt anyone.... Anyway, that brings me to a new point: what
    | the heck are guys going to do with a female student?! Especially in such a
    | testosterone-laden area of performance.... I'm almost afraid to GET a
    | teacher, because I don't know if a) they would want to teach a GIRL :p, or
    | b) how they would treat a girl vs. a boy student.
    +------

As always in life it depends... I simply wouldn't recommend an *immature*
teacher, I mean I won't pay anyone for telling me way tired jokes...
nevertheless it's true that many girls & young women prefer to study w/
female teachers... In my experience it probably doesn't matter that much
any longer once you have reached a more advanced level... but then I never
was too impressed w/someone having a 10-20 or whatever times (sorry I'm a
turkey in endocrinolgy) higher testo level than me :-) My preferred style
of learning was basically autodidactic, but then meeting experienced pros
from time to time over a cop of tea and discussing problems, which they
obviously enjoyed, too, as they also learned something and it wasn't that
    boring...

I also believe a lot in something I call *trained intuition*... basically a
blend of talent, experience and "maturing"... more like "instinctively"
reacting to certain situations, not having to count but simply *feel*
certain time sigs, stuff like that...

    +------
    | Everyone at this school--okay, ALMOST everyone--is a spoiled rich brat or
    | a neohippie who gets stoned/drunk every day (or at least every Thurs-Sun)
    | and doesn't have any respect for ANYONE with different priorities. PLUS
    | everyone here seems to be VERY rude, insensitive, and VERY
    | selfish...sigh...college seems to be a total regression to preschool. From
    | birthdays to personal behavior, it's all childish....
    +------

Let me tell you one thing... the reason I used to watch Beavis & Butthead
on eMpTyV was nostalgia... they reminded me of the dudes I had to endure at
    school... :-\

Well, since everyone else is doing it, I guess I'll throw my favs in...

    Learning to Live:
Filled to the brim with them.. . Some of the biggest ones are:
the 'harmless' keyboard part right before the acoustic guitar interlude
(starting at 5:11); The guitar part _right after_ the whoas... it's
beautiful <sniff, sniff>; and lastly, the outro. That would have to be
the bset use of harmonics I've ever heard. Simply the most intense, most
incredible ending to a song I've ever heard
But then, almost everything in that song gives me goosebumps...

    The ytsejam:
the final 'chorus'... just the main theme again, but listen to the
    keyboards! Beautiful. .

Another Hand/the killing hand (LATM, Live):
The guitar solo from the LATM version. It brings tears to my
eyes... Also, I saw this live in Birch Hill '96, and the new middle
section blew me away. It was so beautiful... only later, when I heard
the MP3, did I realize that it's really the Carol of the Bells!

    Non DT:
Kansas' _Hopelessly Human_ from 'Point of Know Return'
Alright, I keep raving about this band, and this song. One would
think I'm obsessed. Maybe I am. . . but here's why: Right before the
outro, the transition to the main theme, and the main theme itself. What
    a powerful moment...
Kansas' _Miracles out of Nowhere_ from 'Leftoverture'
I'm obsessed with this song to. The middle section. . polyrythms
    in 7/8! It's incredible!

Alright, that's enough for one jam. . .

    figuratively,
    Rich

You don't think they would stick a crazy jazz riff/line in the middle of
    TAMP, do you?

IMO there are sacred things that should never be changed, for example:
     - Scarred (the whole song)
     - The Killing Hand (The new version I've heard (CIA97) has been changed
and I prefer the Marquee/TDOE version)
     - Voices

    You get my point, right?

    -------------------------------------------------
Well, after finally listening to some DT boots (got Spinning Years) I
    have some highlights and remarks:

    - Another Day live with Moore: I just can't believe Moore played that
sax solo in the end note by note according to the CD version... He
    is amazing...
    - Original ACOS: Love it. Very different from the EP version. I love
that Yngwie-style Moore solo before "The Crimson Sunset".
    - LTL live with Moore: Amazing. Simply amzing. I didn't expect too much
due to the structure of the song and got surprised. :-)
    - Ytsejam with Derek: I love how he played that classical riff on the
    piano. Cool.
    - TOWHTSTS with LaBrie: Cool. Mucho cool. Love that song. (He did
    that opening riff!!!!!!!)
    - Original BMS: I think the new version is better...
    - Original TAMP: Get me that Shirley so I could hang him from the
    balls...
    - Original LITS: I like both versions.

What are the last 2 tracks on "Uncovered"? This isn't on no FAQ nor DT
    Unofficial Songbook.

Thanx, laterz, take care and enjoy,

I'm gonna confine mine (for now) to ACOS and FII.

ACOS: "I turned for one last look/she looked me in the eye/I said I love you..." KJLB screaming it to us, showing the urgency of the moment, then DADADADADADADADA "...goodbye." Great emotional transition. Also, the keyboard solo after the locomotive noise. This is where I started thinking that maybe this Derek guy *was* the perfect replacement for K. Moore.

FII: LitS - "Living comes much easier/once we admit.....we're dying". Once again, great vocal emotions followed up by un understated, tasty little guitar part. And, once again, The key solos in BMS and ToT - particularly the last one. This is when I *know* this Derek guy was the perfect replacement for Mr. Moore.

Uh... Forgive my ignorance, but what is falsetto? Could anybody explain, please? I've heard that it has to do with something called "voice register", but I don't have any clue of what a voice register is also.

Any examples would also be very enlightening.

Thank you for any information, Roger...
