    To Nicholas,
            I play through a Highwayman amp with a 1x15T and a 4x10T. I would
HIGHLY recommend this company (David Eden) to any serious bass player
trying to get the best rig they can for both jazz and rock. With a quick
EQ (or Effects rig) change the setup is great for both. I would also have
to recommend the higher level Vantage basses. My six string is a fantastic
instrument (if you do buy vantage, be prepared to swap out ALL the
electronics, ie pickups, pots, knobs, board because tha is where the
company skimps on). I replaced mine with Seymour Duncan Basslines and I'd
put my bass up against a Carvin ($3000) or a Tung ($4-6000) anyday and I
    only paid $1600, electronics included.

Anyway, If anyone from St. Louis is planing on going to Chicago to see DT
and need a ride, I'd love the company.

monsters, so it's OK. Restaurants that allow patrons to select live lobsters
from a tank should be made to paint names on their shells: "Happy", "Baby
Doll", "Junior." I defy anyone to drop a living thing called "Happy" in
    rapidly boiling water."

Wow, so many thoughts, so little time... :)

Just so you know, I cought myself nodding along with several points that
were made that I didn't even agree with, so I guess you can call that a
persausive post. I just want to post thoughts from a different point of view.

I am one of the PMU converts - one of the people who got into DT from
hearing PMU on the radio. So, I eventually went out and bought the album. I
popped it in, PMU came on, I rocked. Then, I waited for the next bangin'
tidbit to grace my ears. What comes out next? Another Day. Not a very
auspicious second impression. After the first listen, I felt a little
cheated because this band wasn't as heavy as I had led myself to believe.
At that point, I dind't know anything much about the "intricacies" of the
music, because I wasn't listeneing to it that deeply. In fact, it wasn't
until I joined this list that I actaully "heard" the album for the first time.

So my "expectations" of the band over time have been a little different.
I've learned to apreciate the complexities, but at the same time, I like
music that has structure. I'm ashamed to admit that I didn't like
Metropolis at first because I thought it "wandered" too much. Of course, I
have since mended my ways and seen the light. :) The fact is, for
non-fans/non-musicians, DT's music is difficult to listen to because of the
complexity. I accept FII and applaud it as an attempt by the band to keep
the trademark "nuances" that define the band, but layer them over less
complex, and easier to listen to SONGS.

As for compositions, I think Metropolis Pt. II will fill that bill nicely,
when it's finally released. It's for that reason that I don't think you can
take FII as the be-all and end-all of where DT is today. There is a lot of
interesting stuff going on in there: They experiment with Jazz/fusion
beats, latin beats, and big, fat grooves. All those vocal harmonies...On
some of them, the actual "lead" vocal tone is pushed back. That's
interesting to me. There are a couple of places where it sounds like JP is
playing plugged into Derek's rig (I know he said he did it at least once).
That's a very interesting sound. There are little things like that all over
the place if you look for them.

The problem is, I think too many people are doing what I did with I&W. I
was looking for a heavy rock album, and I dind't get it. Too many people
had expectations for this album that it didn't meet. Let's face it, when
you've released an album like I&W, it becomes REAL tough to top yourself
    REAL fast.

My conclusion (and this is not aimed at you, Clark, just a general
statement): Don't focus on what FII *isn't*, look at what it *is*. There's
    enough there for everyone.

Good luck, man. I've been looking for that one for years. It got so bad
that I almost stole it from a friend of mine. Personally though, I think
their second one, Victims Of Deception, blows BtS away.

btw, the guitarist and drummer relocated to Germany a few years ago to
play for Die Krupps (a better-than-average heavy industrial band, whose
main claim to fame is the Metallica tribute album they did in '93).

OK DAMMIT.... Let's drop the HAIR's/HAIR IS/HAIRS/etc. thread... god...
this is getting annoying, when every digest has 3-4 messages about
    this/grammar errors/etc. as a joke from time to time it's cool...but

c'mon.. read his damn post!!!! "Don't email me about reserving a copy
yet".... and don't encourage anyone else to clutter the jam like this as
    well...

Dude.. this is one of Petrucci's most emotional songs (of course next to TAMP)
I've heard!!! What do you mean it stinks of doctoring??? "You Not Me" is the
Desmond Child flick (and as such "sounds like it could get a lot of
    airplay").. it
is co-written by Petrucci (you can definitely hear his part in the song),
    but overall
    it's the obviously doctored one...

    >Do you see where I'm going with this? Those albums are the reason i like DT.
    >How could I not compare FII with them?

I think the thing people are saying, is not to compare them TO each other
to determine if you like the album or not, I know it's difficult not to
compare, but instead try appreciating the parts of FII not ever heard
before (and there's quite a bit of it), and not looking for parts that you
would expect to be in IaW/Awake. With Hootie (sorry hootie fans), you
could do that... one album just sounds like the next, but with a band as
intricate and complex as DT, it's impossible to get everything you expect
(and expect everything you get - since you usually get more!).

Later on... keep listenin'... it only gets better from here!

Kind of reminds me of the Old Milwaukee quote -- " guys... it doesn't get
any better than this!!! " how true!

I finally received my FII copy (thanks, CD Universe!), and here come my thoughts and comments:

New Millennium: nice instrumental sections - JLB's voice doesn't fit into the song, though. The song is long, yet the final part makes me feel it came somewhat short.

You Not Me: hated the MP3, hate the song now. That "Youuuuu, not meeeee" chorus is simply horrible - probably D.Child's "work" on it. I wonder if DT will play the song live this way (hope not) and how it was originally. Besides, each time I hear it, I wish more and more it was about a minute shorter. I figure I'll end up skipping this song every time.

Peruvian Skies: quite good, except for a detail: the sung section and the instrumental section are so different they could be two different songs. Also, does the latter one sound Metallica-ish or is it just me?

Hollow Years: pretty good, though the ending is somewhat unoriginal.

Burning My Soul: good, but it has a BIG flaw: that "Buuuurniing my soul" ("BMS"), followed by the electronically altered repeat ("[bms]"). It's done TOO MANY times - had it been "BMS" or "BMS BMS" instead of "BMS [bms] BMS [bms] BMS [bms] BMS [bms] BMS [bms]" I wouldn't be complaining now.

Hell's Kitchen: WOW! This instrumental ALONE justifies my $$$. The best song^H^H^H^Htheme in the album (and, let me be crystal clear on this, is NOT because JLB doesn't sing). I wish it was a minute longer (taking it from YNM, of course!). A week ago I downloaded many MP3s, and will erase them now that I have the CD, (disk space: the final frontier) but I am keeping this one...

Lines In The Sand: just what the hell was that "Ye, ye, ye!" at 3:51??? It took me entirely by surprise! Song's good, in any case.

Take Away My Pain: the music at the beginning (the first 50 seconds) of the song keeps reminding of another (non-DT) one, but I can't identify it. It's driving me nuts! Can anyone help me? Please? Besides this, its typical pop song structure is quite obvious, which is not a Good Thing [tm].

Just Let Me Breathe: So DT throws shit to commercial music, yet they seem to be going into it... I must say this bothers me. (and did I hear an Awake riff reused here?)

Anna Lee: VERY VERY nice. However, the song's structure is SO obvious that AL, as a whole, can't be titled as "perfect". I, being a proghead and a Tangerine Dream fan, value VERY MUCH a "non-standard" structure for a song (other than the typical intro/verse/chorus/verse/chorus/instrumental/chorus/chorus/chorus used in strictly commercial songs (as in, say, the dreaded SG)). In this matter, FII has failed, as most of the songs use well known structures, being this song the most obvious case. In any case, if something it's well done, then very probably it's good, and AL *IS* good (though not perfect).

Trial of Tears: I don't want to yell "rip-off!" (yet), but the beginning part (0:00..1:10, and again at 12:30..12:50) sounds *TOO MUCH* like Rush's _Xanadu_ (from their _A Farewell to Kings_ album), and I feel quite umcomfortable hearing this. I'd like to know what both bands have to say about this issue before I comment any further.

Well, I finally got my copy of FII, even though I'm week late. I've listened to it a few times and feel like sharing my own thoughts on the album. My highlights are NM, LITS, PS, BMS/HK, TAMP, and of course, TOT. YNM: I still don't like this song. I listened to it in mp3 format and just can't get into it. It really is cheesy imo. Maybe it will grow on me (If I can control myself not to skip the track once in a while!) BMS: This is obviously the "balls and chunk" song of the album. While I do like the album, I was disapointed that there was only one heavy song. TAMP and PS: I remember these songs sounding much better live at the fix show last year. TAMP still has lots of emotion, but when I heard it live last year it almost brought a tear to my eye. PS had some cool harmonies by JP and MP. Where are they? TOT: When I read the lyrics, I knew this was going to be a great song. John M is a great lyric writer. He conveys such powerful images. JLMB: This song cracks me up. I hate posers, and there seem to be more and more starting younger and younger each day in my school. This song is so cool just because it makes fun of all these people. I love "daily dose of eMpTyV"! Now I wonder if Mike got that from the jam... Well, since everyone's heard a gazillion reviews by now, I'll just keep mine short and end it now. Just wanted to share a few feelings.

BTW, who is Desmond Child? I know that I know the name but just can't place it. ========================================================================
