I have read several posts now claiming that FII should be judged on its own
merits. (I think even Petrucci said so). Which sounds just fine, except that
it isn't really possible, at least not if you've heard DT's previous albums.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I started listening to DT when I&W
was released, and I loved it. I bought Awake, and I loved it even more. ACOS
has taken a long time to grow on me, but now it's an essential as well as LatM.
Do you see where I'm going with this? Those albums are the reason i like DT.
How could I not compare FII with them?
I have come to expect certain things of DT. When FII didn't live up to my
expectations, of course I was disappointed. I wish it didn't have to be that
way, but that's how human emotions work. By now, I've tried my best to look
beyond those expectations, and in light of that I'm starting to accept that
they have changed, and to be fair - it really is a killer album. I just
think it's a stupid thing to say - don't compare it to their previous
albums. Don't you know that everything is relative?
Oh, almost forgot: Just got my hands on Petrucci's video "Rock Discipline".
I'm starting to understand how he became so good - I'm having trouble
getting through the warm up excercises :-)

Hmm
It has been long enough since the last YtseCon... SOMEONE should
arrange one soon. I am personally thinking St. Louis or Chicago (because
they're closer to ME, just as the CA YtseCon would be better for someone
like Charone). The only thing that comes to mind that might help make
Chicago a better Con would be that it looks as though DT is playin' here on
November 1st. If we can organize it fast enough, we can have a YtseCon and
see the Chicago show all on the same weekend.
If anyone's planning to drive here for the Chicago show, please
contact me. I can probably help get you a place to stay, and can certainly
help with directions at the least. Keep in mind that the House of Blues is
a small club, and if DT does play there, it WILL sell out... they've sold
out the Vic at least twice, and that's a larger venue. Sometimes they
change venues because of high demand, so you never know... but if you're
thinking of going, start planning now.
Just a few thoughts bubbling in my head right now...

It wasn't ever released. :) About 300 "promo" CDs got out, and I
got one. Crack a Smile is the best album Poison ever did. Too bad
Capitol Records screwed them on it. I am thankful to say I got one
of the 300 boots out there.

The last I heard, Warren DeMartini was out of music and doing the father
thing. I had understood from an interview with him that Ratt was over and

On another note: THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to all the jamanoids who
recommended Stratovarius, Angra, and Conception. After a *terrible* day
last week I came home from work and discovered "Episode," "Angels Cry" and
"Flow" in my mailbox, courtesy of Denis at Sentinel Steel. (Thanks, Carlo,
for the recommendation!). What a pickup.
My thoughts: These discs are cool. I think I like Angra best (incredible
vocals from Matos -- you people are right about him! -- and cool keyboards
and orchestrations) but Stratovarius too is excellent, with strong vocals
and great playing from everybody involved. Conception I'm not quite so keen
on, though the first track "Gethsemane" is excellent. I think I'd like them
more if they had less of a industrial sound to them at times.
Keep the recommendations coming! What should I get next?

Yeah, he doesn't have an ego. I met him after the show last night.
I've helped him over the phone in doing some tech support when I
used to work at Opcode. He's really cool and outgoing. I gave him my card
so I hope I can help him out privately with any studio stuff.

will be doing more 'Surfing with the Alien" type stuff on his new CD

An interest comment. Frank Bello (who recorded the aforementioned line in
"Got The Time") actually doesn't play with a pick very much, either. As I
recall, he used a pick at the engineer's urging. I don't use a pick very
often, either...I'm so enamored of what, say, Jeff Berlin can do from an
attack standpoint with his right hand that I don't think the pick is,
generally, all that necessarily. Normally, it's an issue of clarity, and I
haven't generally had a lot to complain about in terms of sonic space, so I
don't have to tweak the tone I prefer to get heard.
On the other hand, sometimes pick playing is a perfectly acceptable thing.
Anthony Jackson, for example, has done some cool stuff with the pick ("For
The Love of Money" is the essence of plectrum funk).
A lot of folks cite the speed of alternate picking as a primary advantage of
using the pick, but you can make the same back-and-forth motion with a
finger and have it sound reasonably good (after you've beaten the hell out
of it practicing the technique). Victor Wooten does all kinds of things to
give him maximum flexibility...it's really very impressive.

I have sent the updated files to Kevin Hammer, but he is swamped with work
and probably won't have them up until Friday. So I guess I will probably
wait until sometime next week to send it off to Petrucci. So check this
weekend for the updated files and send in any last minute changes before we
send it off. I'll also post when it is up.
I hope Petrucci will look it over and can read it. The last time someone
actually showed the TAB to him, he looked at it like he didn't know how to
read it. He probably writes most of his stuff out as actual notes. But
there are not any programs that I know of that will do both notes and
7-string TAB (although there is a _very_ inexpensive program called MusEdit
that will do 6-string TAB. You can put in TAB and have it put the notes
in, or vice versa. Cool program and only $35. Check it out at:
