    I actually haven't had much time to listen to ToT (or much of the new DT
    album in general), but I definitely can relate to the problem of
    uncharacteristic endings of songs. One great example of this (and perhaps
    other prog-minded jammers can attest to this) is the ending of the Yes
    song "Awaken." After coming to an amazing climax, complete with
    thundering pipe organ, crashing cymbals, and Steve Howe's guitar soaring
    into the stratosphere...the song falls back down and repeats the first
    verse. Although it ends tastefully, moving from minor into major, and
    contains an interesting sense of completeness...I believe ending the song
    with the climax would have been much more effective. Any thoughts?

            I know a few people had been talking about promos for the FII
    album. I have been playing my copy of FII on the radio, but today I read in
    one of college music magazines a review for DT-FII claiming that BMS was
    the single (with it's "obvious catchiness" the article said) and that also
    another favorite might be the "Floydian Peruvian skies". It also contained
    the email address for one of the agents, so I was suggested by my
    stationmaster to write and and get some promos and such so that everyone
    can play some Dream Theater. I know there are probably alot of other
    student DJs out there who may like to get their station some Dream Theater
    stuff to play, so if you are interested, I can give you his email address.
    I haven't gotten anything from him yet, so I don't know what he'll send,
    but hey, to promote DT, it's worth it!

    Interesting thought here. I was immediately drawn to FII, and being a
    bassist, one of the huge attractions was Myung's prominence in the mix.
    Somebody a little back posted about how Prater knew how to keep the bass
    in its place, and I was pretty horrified at that one. Point is, with
    the bass moving up in the mix, and the low end playing a more prominent
    role in the music with each album, maybe that's why some guitarists I
    know are pining for the I&W days....

    I was also an '89 convert. However, mine was pretty close to pure luck. I was in the record store (I used to do this a lot) looking for something new to listen to. Ran across the Dream Theater album, thought I'd take a chance and picked it up. Probably the best "blind" purchase I ever made!

    I don't do it too much anymore because it's too hard to tell the bands apart from the album cover and record company any more. I did it once recently and ended up with a dance industrial type of album...which will be going quickly back to a used record store (my first sell back ever).

    I loved LaBrie's voice right away, but I *did* noticed how much they had changed... That's why I can't stand those fuckers who claim that "FII" isn't Dream Theater. They haven't really changed a *bit* since IAW, ACOS and Awake. The songs on "FII" are a bit different from all the other songs they've written. Well, what the hell did you expect.

    The first thing I did when I got on the 'Net, was join the Marillion mailinglist "Freaks". In the welcoming message were instructions on how to get a list of other mailinglists. That's how I found Ytsejam, the second mailinglist I subscribed to (24 August, 1995... memories, indeed). Many times I've regretted getting on here. But my love for Dream Theater's music, the occasional DTC and some intelligent posts every now and then (read: one a month) have kept me from unsubbing.

    I've also mastered the art of pagedowning through endless crap about Dream Theater's most recent masterpiece :-) _____

    People read about Desmond Child's involvement, even before the Mpeg3 hit the 'Net... He has different priorities than Dream Theater seems to have, namely scoring hits. What the Desmond Child linch mob does NOT get, is the fact that Dream Theater agreed to work with him *or* maybe even personally asked him to work with them.

    Hey, that's not a bad idea at all :-) Enchant's drummer played on Steve Rothery's solo project "The Wishing Tree" last year. I'm sure contacting them about this project won't be much of a problem :-)

    Well, I've been lurking for quite some time now, for various reasons (geology program and girlfriend being cheif among them). But I had some free time tonight, and I just thought I'd like to say hi to everyone out there that I haven't chatted with in a while on #ytsejam. Anyways, this part caught my attention, because I've heard Bleeding Me compared with a couple of groups or songs. Anyways, I've always thought that song sounded a lot like some Paradise Lost songs. Has anyone else ever noticed this? I know a lot of people say that Paradise Lost sounded like Metallica, but I never did--only when Load came out, did I see any similarities between the two. Anyways, I'll have to listen to PS some more to hear the similarities to Bleeding Me.

    On a side note, does anyone ever hear, when listening to Load, that a few songs sound like Metallica is *trying* to sound CoC-ish but not quite succeeding? Anyways, I guess I'll let that one go....

    It took me a listen ot two of the first half of the album to get the groove of it, but now, I even love the simpler songs such as Hollow Years, and You Not Me. (btw, Anna Lee was written by LaBrie right? I suppose we should give him a break on his lyric writing abilities, he hasn't really ever written many.) And even if the album isn't quite as complex as I&W, Petrucci's heavy guitars more than make up for that to me, since I love most forms of metal--from death, goth, and such, to speed/thrash, to hardcore, to prog and even a *little* glam stuff that I grew up on in the 80's such as Poison, Skid Row, and Motley Crue. Anyways, that's just my ramblings, and I hope I didn't bore everyone to tears! seeeeeee ya,

    P.S. To the guy (forgot your name buddy heh) who had the near fatal accident, I hope ya recover and get healthy soon!!!     It means the same thing as sappy, if you know that word. LIke, he had a good idea, but the writing is cliched and tries too hard to make its point (it's still a good song though).
