    >don't seem to be different from each other)...

Just on the off case you're not joking (I don't mean that to be rude, but
more of a blanket statement to prevent other people from thinking I'm
gullible), there's no such thing as 1/1 time. 2/2 is the lowest it goes,
and that's called cut-time. You only use that for slow songs, typically,
or otherwise there'd be mad flags all over the place. We're talking 64th
note city. As for the song, I'm not familiar with it, but you can pretty
much assume it's 4/4. Yes, I'll admit it, I don't have every Metallica
album yet. But I do have rhythm, and that's all I need, right? Or, was
that love? Something quantum and metaphysical, I know that much.

Well, then you missed a pretty damn bizarre evening. :)

Sometime between soundcheck, and the Doomsday intro tape, Ed Carlson's
guitar rig stopped working. The band decided to keep playing while the
crew worked on it. Two songs later, the other guitarist's (don't
remember his name, but he replaced Mike Gilbert and was damn good,
    considering) rig stopped working, too!!

Amid all the chaos and confusion, Jason Ward filled up time with a bass
solo, then the drummer followed suit (and then the crowd was actually
requesting a vocal solo!). They then took about a 10-15 minute break to
fix everything (turned out to be a power problem with the club), during
which most of the remaining crowd left. Finally everything was in order
and they played the rest of the set (about a bit more than an hour).

I must give the guys credit for dealing with the situation admirably,
esp since, IMO, Nevermore completely blew them and the crowd far, far
    away.

And in case you're all wondering, Eric AK's voice was thoroughly shot.
Though he did hit many of the high notes, it was not without much
effort, and thus it seems to me like his singing days may very well be
    numbered.

    Hello all,

I have to been meaning to ask if anyone would be interested in a tape trade. I'm looking for a good copy of the fix for '96 show(s). I have quite a few to offer in return. Somebody email me back if interested. Andy Keegan (are you still around) I've dealt with you before....

By the way - I'm in Australia and I don't trade in DATs..

    thanks in advance someone...

P.S. Brian Cox need NOT apply.

I haven't checked out Merlo's new FAQ, but I believe a chapman stick is a
6-10 string fingerboard. It takes amazing skill and dexterity to play. The
bass player from King Crimson uses it often, and Cynic used it quite a bit
    too!

Hello jammers, I’m a big DT fan from Brazil, and believe me we’re not a
    few down here).
This is my first post to the jam(and it’s gonna be a huge one) and God
knows what I’ve learned about DT these past weeks.
Let me tell you guys what happened to me during DT’s Brazilian Tour last
month(the concerts were so packed and took place on Sep 11th 12th and
15th, on the 13th MP’s drum clinic and JP guitar’s.....you name it).
One day before the 1st concert they did an autograph session in a CD
store downtown, it was scheduled for 4:00pm. I got there at 4:30pm
imagining I was late, your kidding me the guys didn’t show up until
6:00(the siren kicks from...). The place was so crowded and there were
no lines or any thing, there were just a bunch of maniacs(about a 1000)
trying to see DT and take some pictures. Since there was no way in or
out of the CD store, how could the band get in? The security guards had
to force up(when I say force up, I mean hitting and pushing you - the
other brazilian guys on the jam will understand) a corridor in the
middle of the crowd so the band could get through, and everybody was
helping to maintain the corridor, so was I. Finally the band got in
after La Brie’s screaming when someone pulls his hair. Ppl got so exited
to know that DT was inside and started pushing back ‘n forth, at this
time the security guards were so mad cause they were losing control of
the situation, and here comes the (best or worst) part, you’ll
understand this words at the end.
One security guard starts arguing with me saying that I was pushing and
stuff and suddenly 2 more come and one of them starts slapping me in the
face and hits me in the HEAD with sort of a truncking, those radios that
securities use. I went back and a guy says to me "Hey man your head is
    bleeding".
I just went crazy when I felt the blood running down my face and neck, I
went to the font of the store screaming and showing my wound and the
guys from the store had to let me in, and they did. The first one to get
in(they started letting ppl in 20 min after I got in).
Man you should have seen the look in their the face when I got in with
my face covered with blood. JLB was the first to ask what had happened,
then JM led me to the restroom with a girl and helped washing my face
and to stop the bleeding. After the bleeding stopped I started to get
autographs to take pictures with all the guys. We talked about the new
album, the tour and about me, can you believe that. JM was the one that
I talked the most(and people say he never speaks).
After all this dream come true, I went to the hospital and got my self 5
stitches in the head, developed the pictures and went home to prepare my
self to the 3 concerts that were coming up.

Hey Mike Bahr, this was the story I was telling you about.

Thanks and sorry for the long lines,

    Leandro(BR jammer)- beling@amcham.com.br

    Hola Jammerz!

Roger Brito was asking about Metallica songs that are not in 4/4. I
happen to have a complete Metallica completion which I checked to find this
info. Here are the songs that aren't 4/4.

    Nothing Else Matters: 6/8
    Don't Tread on Me: 12/8
    AJFA : 3/4
    Disposable Heroes: 6/4

These aren't strange time sigs, but they're not 4/4.

I converted one of my roommates to a DT and Savatage fan. He now owns
more prog than I do. (of course he has money to spend on music which I
have to spend on food.) I'm working on the other two roomates.

If there are any other Charlotte, NC area jammerz, e-mail me. We need to get
DT some airplay here. I'm been calling 106.5 and requesting YNM or BMS, but
    they won't play either.

Is it just me or does anyone else HATE that friggin wankin' Petrucci does
in the middle of Erotomania? The instrumental is amazing in it's melodies
and textures and does not need that neo-classical shit going off where it
plainly doesn't fit. It sounds like it was lifted right off of an old
Cacophany disc (Jason Becker and Marty Friedman) from the 80's. DT's
"showing off" is usually in good taste and improves the song for the most
part but that part is absolute shit. OK - I'm done now. :P

    WHERE SEVENTEEN UNIVERSES INTERSECT

    DREAM THEATER
    'When Dream And Day Unite'
    (MCA MCF 3445)
    KKKKK

THIS MORNING I place a tape in my hi-fi system. It is by a new American
rock group called Dream Theater. We press the play button and I am
immediately impressed. There sounds coming out of my speakers that I have
not experienced for 16 years or more.
I hope you are beginning to cotton on to what is going on here. This is a
new record by a new band who appear to be anxious to re-experience the
years 1972 to 1978, the golden age of progressive rock music. Surprisingly
they do it very well and for that we shall deliver them more than positive
appraisal of their work - that's 8 tracks, or if you like, all 51 minutes
    17 seconds' worth.
'When Dream And Day Unite' is a preposterous title. It suggests that the
contents are in some way selective, a poignant cut above the rest and in
that respect our assumption is absolutely correct. Here is musical
dexterity I have not heard since the glory jazz rock days or Dixie Dreggs
or, as a more accurate description early Kansas.
Keyboards run wild in al directions conjuring up sounds from the common
Hammond organ to the more select poly-Moog. Meanwhile the guitar playing is
of such an awesome technical standard I was immediately reminded of a
sensational hybrid of Jeff Beck ('Blow By Blow' vintage) and Phil Manzanera
    (Brand X).
Then there is the drumming to concider. We must all sit down now and
breathe deeply because in Mike Portnoy I see someone who is clearly better
than Neil Peart or Billy Cobham. Yes, this record is a wonderful bundle of
fun and even the longest track - that's the madcap opus 'The Killing Hand',
which weighs in at a cozy nine minutes - is so captivating that it appears
to be over before it's even begun.
Dream Theater stick out of the current scene like a sore thumb. Every
track tells a story, whether it be about lost love or castles in the sky,
and there for us all to mock is a real life all instrumental track 'The
One's Who Help To Set The Sun' (what a marvelous title) which twists,
weaves and hops on the spot like a Mexican jumping bean.
I return to the tape deck and select the continuous play mode, Dream
Theater and myself are now the best of buddies and we will continue to
enjoy each other's company for many moons. Tonight as they say, will last
    forever.
    DEREK OLIVER

    Hey all,
I dunno if any of you can relate, but there's a lyric line in "Trial of
Tears" that has been throwing me off since I bought the CD. After several
listens, it still sounds like LaBrie is singing the same thing...

"I may have spent too long in darkness
In the warmth of my penis."

While histerically funny, it just makes no damn sense. I finally took out
the booklet to solve this personal mystery. Cool..."fears" :)
Anyone else hear this, or am I just weird? ;)~

Phil Carter (a rare Ytsejammer from Atlanta) mentioned that it was
hard to get through on 96rock's request line (404-741-9696). Yes, but
it's not nearly so hard to get through on the FAX line. This applies
to both stations here, and FAX requests might "weigh" more.

I can now basically confirm that 99-X here played "Burning My Soul"
this past Wed. afternoon (my friend recognized the chorus), so it
would behoove us, if you're calling them, to say "Hey, that cool song
you played on Wed. by, uh, Dream Theater, I think it was? That was
really good, could you play it again?" :) 404-741-0997 voice,

I noticed that the Christmas CD from Trans-Siberian Orchestra (i.e.,
Savatage) has now been rereleased for the new Xmas season, so those of
you who didn't find it last year after Christmas should be able to
find it now. METAL EDGE reports a similar project is in the works

I'm curious. How many of you lyric writers out there really prefer to have music before hand to write the words to? I almost always write without music, but when I do have music to write to it makes it much easier, and I tend to come up with better stuff. Maybe just setting the mood helps, I guess. Feel free to email privately if you don't think this is something for the 'jam.

Hey jammers, check this out , listen to the piano that starts out at 5:53 on LitS sounds just like the intro to UFO's LOVE TO LOVE, & also check the acoustic guitar part on ToT at about 10:00 , I keep waiting for Ian Anderson of JETHRO TULL to come in singing" aqua lung my freind....." After a few listens of the album these two songs are my favs (so far!). Randy Shewey..

i wasn't "conerveted" per se, i was kinda flooded with music... a friend of mine sent me a couple of dubs in Dec of '96... one had I&W and the song ACOS on it and the other had Awake on it... at first it was just the amazing sound of the music and lyrics that caught me... then the individual songs started sinking in... i dont know if it was an individual song but the fact that those tapes got me through some pretty rough times... almost melted them :} and, as its been said before and must be said again... "The rest is history"
