You won't get rid of me that easily! [insert manic laughter here]

The good old "I was converted by..." chain has surfaced once more,
and I couldn't live with myself if I didn't throw my 0.02 EEK in.

I was converted by ACOS. The old version, off Dance of Eternity.
Honestly. An old jammer (Timo Haanpaa) convinced me to buy I&W,
but it didn't sink in immediately. Then I found DoE at a store
and decided to buy it (thinking that I'd sell it to Timo if I
didn't like it) since I figured it was a hard boot to come by.

Then, one night, I listened to ACOS, through headphones, with
the lights turned off. And there's been no turning back since.
It was as close to a feeling of enlightenment as one can have
with music. There are no words for it. And after that, I&W
grew on me quickly and ... as they say, the rest is history.

P.S. I still like the old ACOS better :)

    waistbands and asses to y'all,
    antti

    Hello everybody!

I'm sorry for YELLING at you ;-), but I really want to know how the new album
sells. So if anyone knows the charts position of FII in his/her country,
please tell me! Could be interesting...

BTW, if anyone's still wondering if some of the band members are reading the
Ytsejam -- they do. I promise I will keep my mouth shut (and my fingers
still) in future... Well, at least I'll try ;-)...

    Take care,

    Hi all

after the release of 'Falling Into Infinity' life goes on as usual, and other bands release their new albums. One of these bands is Clawfinger, who have just released their self-titled third album.

    Clawfinger - Clawfinger

Release number three from Sweden's cross-over band number one, and their best album so far. Everything you would expect from a Clawfinger album is there - Zak's unique vocals, very catchy tunes, hard guitars and keyboards, and the industrial/techno sound that is Clawfinger. But this time there is more, which becomes apparent on the first track 'Two Sides' - a very middle-eastern feel, and a backing singer who reminds me a lot of Ofra Haza. Other new things include trumpets and strings - it will be interesting to see how they do this stuff live when they tour in November. If you like bands like Rammstein, Die Krupps and Waltari, this album could well be one for you. 9/10.

Yesterday somebody wrote "23 bonding pairs form a human DNA molecule". You obviously weren't paying attention in biology class. I guess what you mean is that a human sperm cell and a human ovum both contain 23 chromasomes to give a total of 46 after fertilization. Reminds me of the Tool song 'Fourty six & 2'. Class dismissed.

Tomorrow is a public holiday here in Germany, so have fun doing whatever it is you do at weekends to get your kicks. Any Kraut jammers going to the Tiamat/The Gathering gig in Offenbach on Monday? Falling Into Alcohol. Hollow legs.

stay safe and happy listening Neil Gallop (nga@software-ag.de) Currently playing: Skyclad - The Silent Whales Of Lunar Sea

If you're looking for a good stating point to start collecting RUSH, I'd recommend picking up the Chronicles 2 CD set (one that I found used for a mere $16.99). Also, since you mentioned you're a metalhead, I'd recommend the album "Counterparts" there are a rew more crunchy riff oriented songs on that CD.

A thought on Trial of Tears. This is a great song, but there's one thing I don't like. Towards the end, they build up to that great part with James singing "It's raining deep in Heaven" over and over and everyone playing like hell...and then they back off and end it slowly. This same thing has bothered me about Iron Maiden's "Afraid to Shoot Strangers" for years. I think as good as the song is, it would have much more of an impact if it ended full throttle.

    Just my opinion.

    One word, really:

    tastefullness.

My guitarist and i actually discussed this. He doesn't like "busy" progressive rock (like Spock's Beard, Echolyn, and the like) but he really, really digs the new dt. why? it's tastefull. it's not "hey, look how fast -i- can play!" anymore. it's "we can write really good songs and fit out playing to match these tunes" kinda stuff. there's no overblown mastrubatory guitar solos (almost standard in the prog rock vocabulary), and each song knows _when_ to do what, almost as if it's dictating the song itself.

that's why FII is so good.

Well, I still have problems understanding what this word ("cheesy") mean, since it seems to be a slang (and, of course, dictionaries usually don't list slangs), but from what I understand from context (I may be wrong), I can say that Anna Lee is not cheesy. Just not well written (maybe James doesn't have that practice/talent to write lyrics). The song seems to be talking about a little girl (child) that has been put (forced to) to prostitution.

    > but when taken in context of the song (especially BMS and JLMB) they're pretty > damn cool. Has anyone noticed that the lyrics on the harder songs are mostly > Portnoy and Petrucci does most of the softer ones?

Sure. Not only this, but Portnoy's lyrics are less poetic (the language is much more current, with less uncommon words) than those by Petrucci, while Petrucci seems to be using the narrative style, telling you stories. Portnoy usually tells you his opinion, tells the situation.

Had sort of a similar experience. This goes back to '90-'91, I think. Tenth grade, is what I remember. I was taking bass lessons, living right around the corner from the locally famous Focus II, where a few of the guys worked for a time. I think JP and KM were giving lessons, and MP was working there doing other stuff, not really exactly sure... but that's besides the point. My bass teacher one day during a lesson tells me, I got this tape from a guy named John I just ran into, went to Berklee with me for a little while. Was JM, of course. Anyway, my teacher (who is now my cousin-in-law, if there is such a thing) tells me it was great stuff, though not really his style, and that I may like it. So I promptly listened to WDADU constantly, shared it with a few of my friends, and we thought we had discovered the greatest band that (as far as we could tell) had basically vanished, didn't exist anymore. It was like we were blessed with this great treasure, for us only. Not to mention how cool it was for me to say, yeah, this copy of the tape, John Myung was actually carrying around with him once. Still, I religiously checked the new releases, praying they'd surface again.

Sure enough, one day, go into a local music store, and there sits I&W. I grabbed a copy, practically shaking, saying to the guy at the dask, wow, you don't know how happy I am right now. Got a strange look for that one. Bought it, ran home, threw it in--and I was confused. What the hell is this? Wasn't immediately grabbed by PMU, hated AD. Missed Charlie (wow, I can't believe I thought that, even for only a few minutes). Felt let down immediately. That lasted for, oh, maybe ten minutes (including a moment of desperation when I thought my tape broke at the end of PMU). Started over again, with a clearer mind, second chance sort of thing--and I don't think I've stopped listening to it.

Atlanta radio really sucks, which is why we need your help! :)

We have two radio stations in Atlanta that might play something off FALLING INTO INFINITY, 96rock and 99-X. Best to start with "BMS," although I think "PS" might be a better choice at 96rock. Maybe later. :)

96rock has played "PMU" before and is more hard-rock oriented, but they don't play too much new music unless it "flies" over at 99-X -- with rare exceptions. I haven't heard of "BMS" being played on 96rock yet. Their request number is 404-741-9696; best to try between 10am and 8pm. Their FAX number for requests is 404-634-5281. Their normal weekday lunchtime jock is Willard (who I've known since 1983, but don't mention that! He told me yesterday if it were his choice he'd play Rush and DT all day :)), and their evening jock is Kaedy Kaely ("KAY-dee"). Both are veterans, with 96rock at least fifteen years....

99-X is our mallternative station, and they tend to take more chances with new music. A friend has reported hearing "BMS" on 99-X twice, although I have no independent confirmation yet. In any event, they're worth trying. Request phone is 404-741-0997 and their FAX number is 404-364-5855. Midday deejay is Steve Craig (really cool and knowledgeable, probably Atlanta's best deejay) and afternoons after 2pm is Sean Demery, who may have played "BMS" on his show recently per my friend. It might be cool to say "I think I heard you play a new Dream Theater song -- 'Burning My Soul'? Could you play that again? It sounded good!" :)

At either station, if the deejay asks you where you're calling from (a common ploy to see if you're "carpetbagging" for a record label or, say, a band's mailing list :)), say you're calling from one of the following: Clarkston, Norcross, Duluth (GA), Alpharetta or Dunwoody. (These are local suburbs that are easiest to pronounce.) If you're FAXing and can't hide the origin phone number, you can say you're listening to either station over the Internet; both have RealAudio feeds.

If they ask your age, be honest. --But if you're between, say, 22 and 34, go ahead and volunteer your age if they don't ask. :)

Note that after 40 or so rings, the phone company will "time out" your call to anything in the 741 exchange and hang up -- the rats! :)

I'd really like to give DT a well-earned push here. The BEST part about calling for requests is it doesn't COST you a penny long-distance unless you get through, and if you do, hey, you've won the battle!

    Thanks for your support! :)
