Yes, it's true: OFB was interviewed live on television here where the
reindeer roam. Well, actually the only band members present were MP and
DS, obviously surprised and delighted by their chart success over here (in
case you haven't hear: number 5 - beat that, any other country).

The interview in itself was pretty short and crappy, a couple of questions
about the new disc, and a couple of Finnish fans (of which neither one was
me for some cruel and unjust reason) got to ask something. The only really
new thing to know is that Hollow Years is the first single in Europe to
which they'll do the video in a couple of days. The guys also promised to
play here around February, so the European tour will
probably take place sometime then. Yes, after cancelling their last show
and being unable to attend the only one they've played here so far, they'd
better come here or I'm just going to have to kill everyone.

But the major shocker was Derek's look: with the sunglasses and
leather-with-a-gallon-of-hair-gel -look he looked *exactly* like Tommy
    Lee. IMHO anyway.

What sucked is that the program didn't show a DT-video (probably didn't
have one), even though it was mentioned that they were supposed to play a
live recording from Brazil, but the tape hadn't arrived in time. From last
few gigs in Southern America, I'd guess..? Got to catch that when they do
air it. And the program did have a long Stratovarius-interview from Athens
where they recorded some tracks for their upcoming live disc.

Also worth mentioning (hardly) is that Metropolis pt.2 has been played
    completely through once so far.

    Matt:

    > Interesting thought here. I was immediately drawn to FII, and being a

The thing I'm noticing on FII is how well they play together (someone
mentioned something similar that about WDADU). I had heard several
samples of it before. First impressions were right where you might
expect them to be: A New Millenium :) What I hear on this song (and the
album) is just a great overall mix.

I also hear something that truly is the mark of a great band: the
ability to trade off being in the foreground and to control volume
themselves. The way they all come back together at the chorus (pick any
one instance of this, they all rule :) is so sweet. That layered sound
they deliver is so well constructed and Try listening to NM with these
things in mind and see what ya think.

I'm not gonna even address togetherness on LiTS yet. :)

I do agree with what everyone is saying about Myung in the mix and I
like it. As a guitarist (albeit a shitty one), though, I can't help but
notice how much Mike truly shines :) There is just no other drummer
out there right now that is impressing me with the variety and exact
placement of sounds that this guy is coming out with. They're so
appropriate to the mood of the song.

Try going back and listening to this album all the way through from an
MP-centric point of reference. The mood changes so much across the songs
and Mike is right there with it. He accents what any of the other 4 are
    doing so well...

I'm not gonna even address MP on LiTS yet :)

Other than to leave you with a section to ponder. Check out from
8:32-9:20 especially what's he's doing with the bass kick! Listen
closely, then wipe the drool off the floor :)

Sorry guys, this is MP's album :) AGAIN :)

Oh, opinion you say? Bah! It is merely fact,. nothing else...

    bwahahahahahahaha

Tune in next week, when I proove that FII is JP's album :)

    Jon

A (needed?) break from the FII reviews..

The coolest thing happened last night.. I went to the Faith No More concert
in Salt Lake.. and saw some guy wearing an "Awake" t-shirt. I absolutely
HAD to comment on how cool he was. :) Then as I was leaving, a couple
other people noticed the license plate on my car 'YTSEJAM' and gave me two
thumbs up. I was happy. :) And the FNM concert rocked. I haven't had
that much fun in a long time.

For whoever has the Crack a Smile boot.. I used to love Poison, but they've
kind of dissappeared since then. If anyone has the boot, what would be the
chances of ripping the CD and compressing it into MP3? If the CD was never
released and never will be, I'm sure a lot of Poison fans would LOVE
    whoever did it.

hmm...after a lot of deliberation (note the increased usage of legal terms in
the last 6 weeks), the most bizarre time signature i've heard would have to
be something in the dt repertoire.

    the song: "another day"
    album: "images and words"
the meter: 4/4. they actually stuck with this uncommon (in prog rock) meter
throughout the WHOLE song. now THAT is an accomplishment.

ok, i'm fucking around. maybe. hard to think of any set of bizarre meters.
you can play a 7/16 measure (or a 15/16 one as megadeth does in "lucretia")
without too much difficulty, if you can handle it. meters get psycho when
utilized in scenarios they normally wouldn't. dave brubeck (the master of the
odd meter, imo) sits on this perch. another pretty bizarre use of odd meter
is the "blues in 7" pink floyd pulls off in "money." so what if it's in 7,
but a blues in 7 makes things a lot more interersting.

Well, actually, I've always seen 2/2 used for fast songs. If the song
is at something totally ridiculous such as 4/4 at 240 bpm, it is much
easier to just count the half notes in 2/2 at 120 bpm. And when you
start to approach 400 bpm, then you go to 1/1 and just count the
    measures.

But getting back to the original question, if all the beats sound the
same, then you could write it as 1/x. 1/1 would be a bit extreme
because writing anything longer than 1 beat would be tough. If I were
transcribing it, chances are I'd choose 4/4 and accent every beat. It
just makes things easier to count.

Actually, no. There are many time sig changes in "Blackened." _...And
Justice_ was a very cool album with some slight progressive tendencies here

I have to respectfully disagree with this. Listen very carefully - there are
a shitload of changes. I'm not talking about a 6/4 vs 6/8 argument. Rather,
there are lots of changes and extra beats either thrown in or lopped off
(depending how you look at it). If people actually care, I'll go home and
write out the sigs. Off the top of my head, I can remember one brief phrase
of 14 beats - interpret it how you like (4/4 4/4 6/4, for example). Not
having the CD, I can't give you a time reference for that.

    Count carefully!

COOL!!! Just bumped into one of my friends from a long time ago... anyway,
his friend (a DJ) was unloading a bunch of stuff that never got played,
that the station had. So I was talking to him today (with my fix
long-sleeve t-shirt on) and he said, "you know, I remember we had a few
singles and promo stuff from the radio station that got cleared out, and I
just took whatever was laying around... and I still have a few things from
DT if you're interested... I rarely listen to it, so if you're a die hard
fan or something, you're welcome to it"... come to find out, the stuff
includes the Lie single (which I've never been able to find)... so I'll
have that tonight when I drop by... that was the only one he remembered...
    but hey! cool stuff!

    >"I may have spent too long in darkness
    >In the warmth of my penis."
    > Anyone else hear this, or am I just weird? ;)~

if there was an "n" sound in there anywhere, I could buy it... but it
almost sounds as if Labrie says "peers" ... so no, I don't hear the
penis... my, my ... Freud would have a field day with what you heard! :)

by the way, all this talk of debuting on the charts.. anyone know the debut
positions of IaW or Awake (or peak positions if it's any different)... and
I'll repeat... does anyone know what the actual clips from ACOS are (right
after section III (carpe diem) where james sings "I love you....
    Goodbye")????????
All I can make out are " (clips) something happened...(more clips)...he was
    killed"

to answer your question Stephen, Sean Reinert and Sean Malone are guesting on
a prog album for the band Anomaly. they play drums and bass on all the
tracks. there is a three song demo available thru mail order and you can find
it by going to dr. mosh's progressive feast page and looking at his links.
also, the same above mentioned players have their own new band called Ever,
which is said to be cynic-ish music but their demo is not yet released.

I know the feeling. When Syrinx and I drove to Toronto to see Rush in June,
all the locals were absolutely thrilled to see his "1001001" license plates -
    from Pennsylvania, no less!!
