Thanks so much for posting that!! In the 70's, I (as I'm sure several of
the other YtseWalkingWounded did :)) got heavily into all the
artists/bands mentioned there, so this hits home hard.'

Sound heard today on FII that made me go 'HMMMMMMM': The end of TAMP, I
think it's DS, but it reminds me of the Beatles during their psychedlic
    years. Anyone else? Elders?

Over the past month or so, I have been receiving LPs from EastWest.
Now, unfortunately, they are nothing that I like (it's always rap.) I
came home today, and behold, they sent me the "new" 'Busta Rhymes' album.
Has anyone else received these things?

I think Prater got the best tones, with the exception of the drums, naturally. I can hear triggers from a mile away. Having said that, I found out something neat not too long ago - I always thought that it was wierd that two of my favorite albums (I&W and Crimson Glory's 'Transcendence') had triggered drums. Well, on 'Transcendence', they're not really triggered - they're the drummer's real sounds. Seems the drummer was in a serious car accident just before CG went into the studio, and he couldn't play through a whole song. So they sampled his drums, and programmed his actual parts - timing variations and all - into a Synclavier. Some of the hi - hat and cymbal stuff is live, but the rest is Memorex.

I find that pretty impressive. Not that it has anything to do with D-Man's quote...

I don't care for triggers much, either. > >Also, everytime I play Anna Lee in the car, my classmate Ben starts singing >"Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" ("Bottle of white, bottle of red..." :)

You know, that really does fit...

On the subject of getting into DT, I may go back the farthest of anyone I know. I heard a demo of "Afterlife" on a compliation/radio/thingy that at ex that worked at MCA gave me - a while before WDADU came out. I bought the album the day it was released, and then kinda forgot about them after a while - I just happened to be in a store the day I&W came out, and PMU floored me from the start.

Then I heard it on the radio (98Rock, in Baltimore - the coolest rock radio in the US, at that point)

Then I saw the I&W tour - five times.

Here I am now... waiting for my chance to open for them. :)

I'm pretty sure that no one knows *all* of them, but I can tell you that that last one is *she* was killed - the song is, in part, about the death of Mike's mother.

    - just a quick word to pass to the ytsejamming community.

i picked up Sean Malone's CD, Cortlandt, yesterday, and have been playing this damn thing non stop. I'm not a huge fan of progressive jazz, but <clears throat> THIS ALBUMS KICKS ASS.

sorry, but it just had to be said.

Like the new DT, it isn't just "look how fast i can play" mastrubatory solos that most virtuoso musicians do. it's, like FII, very tastefully done, letting the song itself dictate itself. Sean (with his pal Sean Reinert on Drums) put together a great CD, with Trey Gunn and Reeves Gabriels appearing to make it even phater.

I _HIGHLY_ reccomend getting this cd to hear what Sean can do. You can go to http://www.artist-shop.com and get it (i got mine in like 3 days).

Great job, Sean! I can't wait to hear what you have next!

    > This is a question to anyone in the jam who cares to respond...over the > months I keep hearing people talk about songs in fractions...like 4/8 and > 4/4 ...and 6/8...ect... what in the world does all that mean? If you want

These are what are referred to as "time signatures." Your basic rock song is in the time sig 4/4 throughout. That means that each measure is four beats long, and a quarter note is the measurement of one beat. It's tough to define all these things without defining them in terms of each other. Just take your basic 7 Mary 3 song or something, and tap on your knee "1-2-3-4" as the song plays. You're tapping along with the bass drum, or the snare, most likely, and you're tapping in 4/4.

Now tap along with "Peruvian Skies." The beginning of the song, you're tapping "1-2-3-4." Each time you get to 1 again, you've started a new measure. Now, when you get to the chorus "Under Peruvian skies..." you'll notice that your tapping naturally shifts to "1-2-3 1-2-3." This part of the song is in 3/4. The quarter note still is measured as one beat, but this time you start a new measure after three of them, instead of four.

Fast forward to the second chorus in PS, the one that builds into the heavy part. The most natural-feeling way to tap this part out is by tapping twice as fast as you were before. Therefore, the bottom number of the time sig here is 8, because one beat is now measured as an eighth note, instead of a quarter note. And since you're now tapping "1-2-3-4-5-6 1-2-3-4-5-6", this part of the song is in 6/8.

Thank Ged this is a Dream Theater list. Imagine trying to explain this to people on an AC/DC list. :)

    Hey guys,

Here's a chance for DT to get a little media exposure. The Guitar Magazine anual reader's poll. John Petrucci has already been honored by this mag, so I figure it's the one that has most DT fans among their readers.

Where to post your e-mail: guitarmag@aol.com Subject: Readers Poll

    The categories are numbered:

    1. Best Rock Guitarist of 1997 (here you say John Petrucci ;D) 2. Best Guitar-Oriented Band of 1997 (here you say Dream Theater) 3. Best All-Time Guitarist 4. Best Guitar Album of 1997 (here you say DT-Falling...) 5. Best New Guitarist (your fave new prog band guitarist ;) 6. Most Overlooked Guitarist (jammers will love this one) 7. Favorite Guitar Style other than Rock 8. Best Non-Rock guitarist 9. Your Prediction for Best Guitarist of NEXT year 10. Models of Guitar and amp you most often play 11. Best Thing to happen to the guitar this last year 12. Worst thing to happen to the guitar this last year (can you say eMpTyV) 13. Time to pull the plug on (ditto?) 14. Biggest disappointment of 1997 (don't make this a tread please) 15. What would you like to see more in the Guitar mag.

All you have to do on the e-mail is specify the number and your answer.

Final voting deadline is November 15th. Maybe if John Petrucci wins this one he could even appear on the cover. That would be very cool indeed.

    Thanks,

    Christian.

I know it's not quite Christmas yet, but I came across a reference to the line 'Promises to Keep', which is a title/lyric on TSO's Christmas Eve. It comes from the poem "Stopping by the woods on a snowy evening " by Robert Frost. The poem seems somewhat apropos to the CD/song's storyline Thought 'tage aficionados might be interested.

I haven't been reading the past few Jams (shame on me) but on the Boston Jammers list, there was a rumor (yeah, it was you Binky! Off with your head!) that Toad's Place had already been sold out. I repeat that it is not sold out - as of 4:10 PM EST on 10/3/97, Dream Theater was not sold out at Toad's Place. I should know because I just bought 2 tickets from Ticketshafter. So, for those of you who almost gave up trying to score some tickets, do not fear. It's not sold out...yet.

Well, this is sorta true, but not entirely. You'll never (or, at least, I haven't) SEE something in 1/1 time, but it is something that's entirely possible...one beat to the measure, whole note gets one count, isn't a way to write anything but maybe the simplest, slowest canons, but it's entirely possible. It'd be a pain in the ass, generically speaking, though.

I think there've gotta a few you've overlooked. "Orion" has all kinds of time signature shifts (some of them a downright pain in the ass) in it, for one. "Eye of the Beholder," as I'm thinking about it, shifts back and forth a little, too. A great deal of "...And Justice For All" is in 4, as I recall. I've gotta think there are a few others, since I'm just drawing stuff off the top of my head.

Hey, I friend of mine, who studies Classical Music once told me to get an album by Gentle Giant called "Playing the Fool". He described it as being the best rock album that he has ever heard, but I haven't been able to talk with him for a long time.

So, could you elder 'jammers post a review of this album (or any other Gentle Giant album), please?
