I see that in most places here in the UK. People don't seem to realise
that the spelling of /names/ is the same everywhere and that "Dream
Theatre" is WRONG! I can't say it bothers me that much, but it's nice
when I see it spelt correctly. :-)

Thanks for posting that - it makes interesting reading! Somehow I can't see the Kerrap of today giving anything as unpopular as DT a good review; they're trying so hard to sell magazines that it seems only the trendy bands (such as Korn, Marilyn Manson etc) get the best reviews. :-(

How does it compare with their second album? As it happens (and this is really strange, because I haven't listened to it for months) I'm listening to "Deaf dumb blind" right now and I still think it's a great album. I was /very/ disappointed with the follow-up - it was built from the same type of riffs and ideas as DDB but was almost /totally/ uninteresting. I might check out the new one if it's as good as you say.

I was the person who originally said that, that part sounds like Dave Mustaine from Megadeth. When I think of Kurt Cobain, I think of out of key, weak, and mumbled singing. Hmm, I've only heard 5 or 6 of songs with him. And he used the same voice "style" in every one. What am I missing? :)

    Hey there, Marilliyammers(heh) -

I just stopped by the local music shop and they've got 2 or 3 imported albums. Ipersonally don't know a damn thing about Marillion but I wondered if these are normally hard to come by. I could pick them up for someone if they're interested. Plus, what's a good album to start myself off with?

Well, I just got back from another ripping show. Tony MacAlpine, Ricky Ricardo, and Mike Terrana at the Boardwalk in Sac. It was a great show. Small but enthusiastic crowd. Alot of underground bands and instrumentalists stop by here. Dream Theater was there in early '92 I was told. It was after this show that I first saw Dream Theater at what I consider a legendary performance at the defunct 'Stone' in San Francisco. I'll never forget that gig. It only cost $5.00 to see them. This was just before 'Pull Me Under' became a hit. Did anyone on here go to that show? It was incredible. Club shows are the best.

Anyway, Tony was phenominal like ususual. Did a lot of classical keyboard pieces with a mixture of tunes from his various CD's but mostly from his latest 'Violent Machine.'

Mike T did another incredbile drum solo that would just blow your head off. This was the 3rd time I had seen him and he's just a really cool guy. He told me alot of neat stories about his experiences. He is also the President and General Manager of Metropolis Records which is the Indie Label Tony and him are running. They'all dig Dream Theater of course. They will be performing at the Roxy in Hollywood tonight. I hope some of you can see it. Well, that's it. I'm taking too much space already.

Hello, Haven't been keeping up on my jams, so forgive me if someone has beaten me to the punch. This is my first attempt at this, but I just couldn't resist this one. Let me know what you think. For all you happy hour fanatics, in the spirit of Pull My Finger comes:

    Burning My Hole

A plate full of wings, a pilsner of beer, I eat like a pig, so buddy keep clear. My stomach swells, can't get it to hold more. And you just keep saying I'm vile.

As my stomach growls, I head for the back, My ass hits the toilet as my bowels fight back. The turn of the knob, God don't open that door! And I scream "Just go away!"

Shifting, squirming, My tummy keeps churning. Grunting, groaning, The pressure keeps on burning my hole.

I pause for a moment, let the first wave pass. Then grab for my ankles, another burst from my ass. I feel the pain, all through my gut, and it's much worse than the last one.

Shifting, squirming, My tummy keeps churning. Grunting, groaning, The pressure keeps on burning my hole.

Responsible drinkers Almost never break wind. Still I find myself wishing I never did. I can't spend this night On the porcelain throne, Or I'll never see the first light.

I reach for the paper, nearing the end. The pain is receding from my back end. But it comes in a flash, I sit back in a hurry. I'm still full of shit... WHOA!

Shifting, squirming, My tummy keeps churning. Grunting, groaning, The pressure keeps on burning my hole. -- ______________________________________________________________ "Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter..." -Yoda, the Jedi Master ______________________________________________________________ Andrew Forcier a.k.a. Just thought some of you might like to know that I bought FII at Tower Records last night. I more or less ran over to the DT section to find FII, and there it was waiting for me. I picked it up, and went to the check out station, and thats when I was floored...

There was a massive stack of FII right next to the cashier, and FII was #22 out of their top 25!!!!!! If that isnt an indication that people are starting to really dig DT, I dont know what is.

We didnt beat Boyz II Men or the Foo Fighters, but its a start ; )

Oh, and I just wanted to say to all those that DONT like YNM, I think its an awesome song. When the chorus is about to hit, pause the CD and just think about the different ways DT COULD have played it, and how they do. If you look at it in that light, you may start to appreciate it more.

Also, to the guy in the accident, best wishes for a quick physical recovery, and my more drawn out mental recovery. Ive been in an accident (but not quite so severe), and they can change perceptions in an instant

    Hi,

You people were talking here in the newsgroup about problems with the Metallica Fan Club. I'm a brazilian fan of Metallica's and I'm very sorry to say that I won't re-new my subscription to the Metallica Fan Club, unless my problems disappear soon. It seems that this institution is highly unorganized or that its structure is not sufficient to maintain its dimension. Let me begin with my story. On Feb 19th, 1997, I did my on-line subscription thru the site and it stated that I would receive a starter kit containing many things, including a t-shirt, for instance. It also stated that I would receive the package within 8-10 weeks and that it usually didn't take that long to arrive, but the stated time was just to be sure that every fan would receive his/hers kit in time. A lot of time has passed, I haven't received my package yet and many messages were sent to the account of the club (BTW, it is metclub@aol.com) and I received answers telling that they had problems (I can send you messages with complete headers if you want me to prove my point). The interesting point is that these problems were reported on March/April. Many, many more than 10 weeks have passed since I received that e-mail and the only items I received were two editions of "So What!", the fan club fanzine. If you people from the Metclub don't know how to count, I think that I can teach you. I may have problems expressing myself in English, but I *don't* have many problems expressing myself with Mathematics. I can really show you that 10 months is much less than the time I have waited. I think that I've been very patient, don't you agree?? Aproximately 8 months. I won't rest until I receive what I paid for. It is not very difficult. I simply cannot conceive the fact that the fans have to trust this entity called Fan Club, send their credit card numbers blindly, in the hopes of receiving something in return and the they end up being completely ignored.

Why can't you from the Metclub just be fair and send me what I paid for??? (I wouldn't expect nothing more from you -- but keep in mind that other fan clubs like the Dream Theater one is much smaller, yet it gives its fans some surprises such as Christmas CDs, etc). I think that I deserve an answer (that's the least that I could hope for). Otherwise I'll advise people to *not* subscribe to the Club, because they will rip you off. I'm a very reputable trader (I have always honoured my name) and I would expect honesty from such a large organization.

Hope to hear from the Metclub really soon, Roger...

P.S.: And I have even paid extra 20 dollars for my packages/magazines to be sent faster. -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Rogerio Brito - rbrito@ime.usp.br - http://www.ime.usp.br/~rbrito Undergraduate Computer Science Student - "Windows? So, you guys thought you were rid of me eh?

    HIYA PEEPS!!!

Well, it has been a very long time, but I AM back.

My thanks to all of you for your patience and support over the last 6 weeks. It was appreciated.

Hmmmmmmmmm....the place still looks the same. Whatever happened to that swing Skadz put in the back yard?

    Some thoughts on FII.

    1) Song Writing

This is album is FAR more groove oriented and has better radio potential. From the pop potential of You Not Me to the Elton John styled Anna Lee (James' first official lyrical outing) the songs seem more cohesive and, yes I'll say it, less self-indulgent. This is not to imply that I have anything against their more complex material. Rather I&W is still one my favorite record. Perhaps that's a result of it being my DT deflowering. Get your minds out of the gutter you swine!! =09 Occasionally, the lyrical content gets a little spooky, but I applaud them for having the strength to slam the banal hording of ilk that has become MTV. Cult popularity does not equal quality and junkies are a poor choice for role models.

Peruvian Skies is a very good glimpse at child abuse through the eyes of a child.

Children I have counseled in the past feel much of the same confusion that Vanessa does. There is no way for them to understand the duplicity of feelings and to formulate their fear into a coping mechanism. =09

    2) Production

Hmmmmmmm it's not bad but there are brief spots where the highs begin to fade out at times. I miss some of Kevin's trademark sine synth sounds, but Derek adds a nice degree of diversity to the soundscape and that is an interesting breath of air in itself.

Unfortunately, I find that the change in James vocal stylings removes some of the passion from songs like Peruvian Skies. There's just something missing that I feel that Tate might have been able to deliver on that song that James missed. Please note that this is not a knock on James. He is a great talent and I have the utmost respect for him, but I have a feeling that Kevin Shirley had too much of a hand in the vocal design of the CD.

    3) Implications for Future Development

If this disc indicates a path which they are likely to follow, they may wind up facing the same criticisms that Rush has fallen prey to; promoting accessibility in exchange for a lack of progressive tendencies (Time signature variations and lyrical complexity)

However, I feel that the desire to be more than just a prog band is a positive one and shut provide some interesting directions when the next record is released, particularly if there is a more intense fusing of past and present compositional ideologies.

On the whole, I like the disc. It is radically different than anything they have done before, but, it also allows for a sonic experience that will open many new doors and enlighten many new fans as to what progressive music can be about.

    That's it for now.

As I said, it's nice to be home with my second family. 8-)

    Cheers,

    Rick Toronto

I think that's inevitable Hector, particularly when people feel that there identification with a band has been threatened.

Personally, I think if the album is viewed as commercial and is successful, that's great.

Having more financial security will increase the control that they have at Elektra, a relatively domineering company, with respect to the creative process.

More power to them if they wanted a change! 8-)

    Hmmm......

No flames forthcoming, but what I hear is a tone of detachment to the situation as is often the case when listeners or observers hear abuse occurring. There is a desire to help but a paralysis usually occurs coupled with a desire to listen as a result of our innate instinct of curiosity.

    Bingo!

    Agreed on both counts.

Anna Lee is a sensitive ballad full of questioning and internal conflict and I really hear none of Xanadu in TOT. Naturally, there are some percussive references to them, as they were an influence early on in the band's career, but that, to me at least is where it ends.

The live intro to Take the Time is much more like Xanadu with JP's use of the volume pedal.
