Uhh, that's pretty much on purpose Jon. One them them is Dream Theaters
outlook on life so to speak, and the other is the twisted brainwashed
attitude of a sellout pump your head full of crap MTV'ish mindset.
Just Let me Breathe is kind of a scathing dose of reality about
the way MTV and the record industry have brainwashed young music
listeners promoting the same crap over and over, and what it does
to the "musicians" in todays alternative bands as they get chewed
up by this "machine" of an industry.
(sidenote to the guy who thought Mike Portnoy was dissing Cobain and
Hoon in that song - he's not really, he is using them as an example
of the damage that todays sellout industry can do to young musicians
and the pressure thats involved in making them "alternative icons" in
exchange for a record contract and making the record label a fast buck)
Take The Time on the other hand is more like what Dream Theaters mind-set
is about. It's about seeing things for what they really are, taking control
of your own life without letting all these outside influences destroy
your ability to control your destiny. It's about doing everything from the
heart and mind the way you know it should be, rather than being miseld by
the bandwagon so to speak.
Both songs, IMO, carry a great message. One inspirational, and the other
a sad but true reality.
Of course, this is only my personal speculation (disclaimer)

Hi all,
First I am extremly happy of the news that DT is touring
Australia. YES YES YES!!!!
Secondly, I heard a rumor that DT is working on Metropolis pt II, it is
about 20+ mins long, and they are releasing it in the same style as ACOS.
Has anybody else heard this?
Thirdly, was The Mirror/Lie going to be originally going to be named
"Puppies On Acid", or is this just a crock of shit?
Thanks, from a Happy Australian Jammer,
Jason.

OK, I am finding it extremely frustrating to see that other Jammers from
other states are running into the same bullshit I am from radio stations.
The WRIF, Detroit's "Real Rock Station" (uh-huh) has no clue. I call
very frequently and finally decided to stop because every time I asked
for DT, they told me they have NONE in the station. None as in ANY of their
albums. I find that sad considering that in their hey-day of being an
excellent station, they played the shit out of PMU and UAGM back in 1992.
When Awake came out, they played CIAW for a week...nice.
But alas, there is some light at the end of this tunnel. There is another
station 97.1 KROCK that is so cool! I should have given these guys more of
a chance to begin with! They will play pretty much anything you request that
is rock related music! I called late one night and the DJ said they had
no DT but he knew how much of a kick ass band they were! I told him of FII
and he said that he would have to check it out. Then he gave me a fax number
(248) 423-3383. He said to direct the fax to a guy named MATT SURRENA. The
DJ told me that this guy Matt is looking for listeners to send them ideas
for new music. By the way, their number is (313) 298-9797. So, I faxed
a letter to him and told him of FII being just released(which the DJ said was
a plus!) and also about APSOG (hey, why not ;)). So, I am going to call
in a couple of days and see the progress. In the meantime, I urge ALL Jammers
in the Detroit area to contact KROCK and raise some noise.
Let's get the Rock Capitol to play some rock music!

Well, I just got the new Guitar World mag. I have a few things to say.
It's great that there is an article about John Petrucci. It's great that
a monthly John Petrucci column will be returning to the magazine. It's
also great that the free CD of new music that comes with the CD features
"Burning My Soul."
However, I am still, overall, displeased by this issue. I know this
magazine is shit. It's not fit to line my rabbit cage. But STILL I am
displeased. I am displeased because there are like a MILLION pages <not
to mention the cover> on a band that SUCKS that has "reunited" with an
"album and tour in the works" while Dream Theater, a band that has a NEW
ALBUM and some actual musical merit and integrity, gets a scattered few
pages. The band on the cover is going to <might?> record a 45-50 minute
CD with a single and some other tracks that will sound very much like all
the other shit they have peddled to the ignorant masses. The band given a
pitiful number of pages has just put forth almost 80 minutes of new music
that retains the integrity of their previous efforts and at the same time
sounds like nothing they've ever done before. The music is complex and
thought-provoking, and at the same time hooky and radio-friendly.
I am displeased with the booklet accompanying the CD sampler. Couldn't
they even get the track number right? <The Dream Theater song is track 5.
The booklet says the title of track 2 and that it is found at track 7.>
Get a fucking proofreader!
The thing with which I am the most displeased is the John Petrucci
interview itself. The interviewer seems to only care about pointing out
how the band's compositional style has changed, downplaying the band's
collective musicianship, and even goes so far as to try to get Petrucci to
say that their former style is immature. The real heartbreak in this is
that Petrucci actually says it. I don't know about you, but as a
musician, I felt about 1 inch tall reading that. To think that a
musician's musician said, on record, that more technique = immature and
less technique = mature makes me very sad. Also confusing is that the
article goes on to talk about a possible future Dream Theater project is
the most insane, most complicated thing they've ever done. Why go
backward if you've become so "mature?"
I love the new Dream Theater CD. Am I going to love the new Dream
Theater? Time will tell...

I was listening to BMS the other day, and got this really weird
sensation...I began to think that it has a theme much like Just Let Me
Breathe (i.e. negative feelings toward recording companies and the music
industry in its present state in general).
Just a warning: My opinion (and only my opinion) follows. If you don't
like my opinion, I'm glad...because I don't want little Raytheon-droids
running around and posting to the list. :)
Analysis of lyrics follows
A thorn in my side, a chip on my shoulder
Chip towards label for the shit they try to pull
A lump in my throat, the size of a boulder
DT is nervous to express their feelings to label
The chill up my spine, can't get any colder
Thinking about what might happen if they don't
follow the wishes of the label
And you wonder why I can't smile
We're (DT) not happy with you (label)
A knot in my gut, an ape on my back
Nerves over the new album
In the heat of the moment, I'm knocked off the track
You drop the ball, I pick up the slack
Label drops the ball (of promotion), DT must
rely on their existing fan base to sell albums
And you ask me why my hairs [sic] gray
It's you, you assholes at Elektra
CHORUS
Twisting, turning,
Anxiety
losing all sense of yearning
DT is no longer allowed to reach for their
true musical potential, but must bow to the
sacred cow of cash and sales
Living and learning
DT never anticipated these problems (promotion,
label disfavor, etc.) when in their early
years..."I guess you live and learn, huh?"
The pressure keeps on burning my soul
It is becoming more of a labor than a love for
DT to express themselves while still pleasing
their ultimate critics (label)
I say it's green and then you tell me it's red
DT sees the right time for an album release,
but the label says to wait, or endlessly
delays production
Keep your thoughts and ideas locked inside
of your head
Label to DT: don't think, don't make music
that makes people think, don't even think
about thinking...just make stuff that people
will buy. Nobody can understand you guys...
you're too (weird, eccentric, nuts, intelligent)
We've got someone who can think for you instead
Desmond Child?
And he sounds just like the last one
If Aerosmith can sell records, so can you!
Just "borrow" some of their stuff...yeah,
that's it! I'm sure they won't mind.
[CHORUS]
Responsible thinkers throw caution to the wind
Thinkers express themselves without fear of
repercussions...sort of a "tenured faculty"
approach to free expression
But I find myself speaking from within
We'll (DT) say what we want to regardless
I can't live my life walking on eggshells
To stay on your good side
We (DT) can only please you guys (label)
by writing "radio-friendly" and "popular"
music for so long...just let us breathe
Using your words, controlling my life
Label manipulating DT via contracts, etc.
Can't you see it's my words
That give you your life
Hey, if nobody wrote songs for you, your label
wouldn't exist, and your big fat leather-chair
CEO, golf-playing, alternacrap-loving, cigar-
smoking, mistress-having ass would be out
of a job
So I hurt your feelings, well I'm really sorry
It's been released, and there's no going back
(You don't think anybody at the label actually
_listened_ to the lyrics of JLMB before
they released it? :) )
But I don't give a shit
Elektra: FUCK YOU!
[CHORUS], ad infinitum

Just a thought for someone with a little spare time and some extra web
space:
How about a listing of which 'jammers will be attending which concerts in
the next few months? Once we get some better idea of the tour dates (which
start in just a week or two), we could have people submit their name, e-mail
address, city of residence, and the shows they're attending. That way, we
could find each other before/during/after the shows in selected cities of
our choosing to hang out, etc.
I know I am excited enough to travel at least 700 miles for shows, so I'll
probably see at least 3 shows here in Texas and the area.
Anyone interested?

According to an interview Enchant gave to a German Fanzine quite a while ago this "cloning" wasn't on purpose. In this interview one of the Enchant-guys (I think it was Doug Ott) told the story of how one fine day some Enchant guy stumbled in the rehersal room with the brand new "Awake" in his hands, telling the others to listen imediately to 6:00, because it sounded just like one of their own songs they'd just recorded.... I believe this story, because I know that DT has never been an influence to them. Whenever you ask them about their influences they always name Rush and Marillion, and in fact "A Blueprint..." was produced by Marillion's guitarist Steve Rothery who actually played some guitar parts (if you know Steve R.'s playing you can easily tell which ones). Pierced nipples, tattoos, and dyed-black hair. That's where the fame and fortune's at baby. Guitars are only accessories.

Re-read your article man, the interview's hilarious! The shmuck doin' the interview with Petrucci doesn't know shit about music, and it shows! My favorite quote?"You use Mesa Boogies, which aren't known for their distortion." "Well, I don't know, it's what Metallica uses, isn't it?" ALSO, "So, why didn't you put Metropolis part 2 on this CD? Because of the difference between its feel and the feel of the rest of the CD?" "No, Metropolis Pt. 2 is 25 MINUTES LONG! If we put that on the album, we would've had to cut all this other material." If Petrucci's admitting anything, he's admitting that he loves the music he's making, AND that this guy's an absolute moron (in his own subtle Petrucci-esque kinda way)! (mind you, I read the issue in the grocery store across the street, I don't own a copy, so I'm givin' yall the gist)
Anyhoo, if you can't trust Guitar World to provide good interviews, who can you trust? 8^P

Remember RAW magazine? Dave Ling loved Dream Theater, and when Awake was released he wrote a nice big feature article giving a rundown of all the new songs. He also gave the album a very good review.
I agree that Kerrang will completely ignore FII, but as Dave Ling seems to do a bit of writing for Metal Hammer these days, I'm hopeful.
