Paul, You made me wanna post something I was thinking about
    since the night before.

Everyone here is waiting to hear Metropolis Part 2, correct?
Of course, who wouldn't want to. It's THE most anticipated DT
song right now. The way I see it, is that, Paul is right it
comes down to money and the reason there is no tour is
probably also because the label just doesn't see any cash ops
in it. Well, if DT was smart, and we all know they are, don't
bother recording it. Put out another EP, get a new label (I
believe they just have 1 more recording to do then they are
free from all contract obligations) Give the new label the
song, well, don't GIVE them the song but record it and then
that basically tells the current label "Ha, we screwed you
over". So, theres that little logical bit, why record Met 2
under Elektra, thats what elektra is waiting for. At least get
a label that can do some good for the band.

As for touring, do what Iced Earth does, do it yourself.

Pauls post - part of it, just for referrence.

DT's label apparently hasn't "paid off" (ahem, wink wink nudge
nudge) 96rock's airplay consultants, hence 96rock acts all
dumb when you call. It's an act, of course; the deejays I
know there would love to play DT. I'm sure their label will
act all innocent when the subject of Atlanta airplay comes up.
It all comes down to money, folks, and where best to apply it.

Holy fucking shit...you guys will never believe this.

Elektra has updated the DT page! I shit you not! :)

    http://www.elektra.com/metal_club/dream/dream.html

And guess what? They spelled the name WRONG in the title bar of the
browser. Imaging that...OFB can't even get their record label to spell the
damn name right! There's lots of misinformation (e.g. the discography only
lists 3 albums, the newsgroup address is still arastar, etc.), but there's a
few cute group pics of the guys. Be sure to check out the "A little bit
about us", as it's like an interview and the label's only serious attempt to
say anything (nice) at all about the boys.

Elektra (as if we didn't know it already) is obviously pushing for YNM to
become a "hit", as they refer to it when describing songs: "from the
ominous thunder of the LP's opener, "New Millennium," to the pop polish of
"You Not Me". Pop polish, huh? Is that like a soda & a dog at the
    ballgame? :)

This just confirms my suspicions about Elektra...they are run by Illuminati
who are planning initial public offerings of Bush and Oasis in the near
    future.

Got a question for all you movie buffs:

Is the track "Hell's Kitchen" on the soundtrack to Sleepers the same as (or
similar to) FII? Is it even by DT? I've got a friend who saw the movie,
and said "Did you know Dream Theater did a song in the movie?" I would
assume that she must have seen their name in the credits, as she knows I
like DT, but wouldn't have known the name of a song, so I don't think she's
fucking with me. But who knows? :)

Well, tickets have been on sale for DT at St. Andrews since Saturday.
I just got tickets tonight, it's all general admission, and I forgot to ask
how many were left, so MI people should probably get tickets soon, since this
place is small. Oh, yeah, the show's on Oct 30. See some of you there.

I suppose that I count as a "contact" to the band. Mike has quite
understandably been far too busy to get to e-mail lately. As for the official
DT web page, I have no idea who's running it. I've sent mail to Josh Sager,
I've mailed them with their little mail form thingie, and no luck. They won't
update their FAQ mirror (it's dated March 1), they won't just link to the FAQ,
and they apparently have some aversion to letting us know when the tour dates
are. I've done what I can. Maybe someone else (Mike? Skadz? Neil?) can get
in touch with someone I can't and see what's up.

    > Definitely disappointing..........

Agreed. I'm pretty upset that I have to learn about tour dates through TicketShafter -- and even then, apparently (Detroit) it's not complete info.

To the jammer who posted about JLMB sounding like something from White
Zombie. I heard the exact same thing the first time I listened to
it. I believe the song was called "1965"?...maybe not, but that was
the chorus anyway...the main riff in both songs is almost the exact
    same.

I totally agree with the fact that "Hollow Years" should be released
as a single, this song could be huge...I can't think of a catchier
    song they have ever written.

Finally, I'd like to voice my disgust with the "official dream theater
web page" It's great for the first time listener, who wants to learn
about DT, but has anything been added in the last year?? I've just
given up trying to check out what's new...it's only updated once every
2 months...there's got to be more going on than that! And can we maybe
    get some tour info???

I've finished a web listing of DT concert dates and people who want to get
together before each one. Dates are organized by state/province, and will be
added as they are confirmed. There is a form to add your name, email address,
and whether you are able/willing to drive. People can use this list to contact
each other and figure out a gathering place, etc. The address is:

I agree, I'm a loyal DT (and Rush) fan but I am a hug fan of Terry
Bozzio's talent. And I'm not even a drummer! (just lived with one)

I had the opportunity to see Terry play at a clinic in San Jose on April
2, this year at a store 2 blocks from my place! You aren't kidding
about the cymbals....he had a moving van just to cart his kit around.

But DAMN! he's got some chops.......

    <snip snip>

Okay, I've read the article as well, and well, I don't find anything offensive
about the article, to myself, or to any fans, 'n I'll explain why.
*gets a bag of chips and a soda*

As an artist, I totally understand what it means to mature artisticly, you start
judging your own work harder, quicker, and you churn your thoughts a lot more in
process than you did when you first started out (assuming, of course, said artist
is continually striving to become better and better). In DT's case, it seems that
the band has "matured" in the sense that they've strived to communicate an emotion
better in thier newer material than they have ever done before. Sure, there are
those songs off of I&W, Awake, and even WDADU (pronounce that out loud, I love the
way it rolls off your tongue!) that send coldness, warmth, and excitement, I
totally agree. Surrounded, Space Dye Vest, and Scarred, and well, the list goes
on. But what they are trying to do is evolve into a style, that while is still
their own, is something (insert nipple disclaimer here) more concise, something
that doesn't require a jaw-dropping solo for each instrument for every song.
They're a lot tighter as a musical whole on FII, and I'll have to say that was an
effect based on the way the CD was produced (everybody seems to be wanting to
progress towards a "live" sound on their albums nowadays). When Petrucci, or
whoever says that they think their older material is "immature," it isn't a knock
down of anybody who loves that particular style of DT/progmetal/whatever, but a
reflection of what the artist thinks when he looks back at his art.

As for Metropolis Pt. 2 being "old school," and thus, "immature," I believe the god
of shred MEANT that it's wilder than anything they've done before, because, let's
face it, they've been workin' on that tune for quite a while now! It's going to
please the "old school fans" because it should have a lot of the same elements
found in their older material. I'm thinking Met.2 will be like a stylistic
compilation of Dream Theater, with bits 'n pieces of WDADU, I&W, Awake, ACOS, FII,
and of course, something new and unexpected.

That's why we love these guys, right?

Well, since the discussion of time sigs in "Blackened" has continued, and
since people still say "it's mostly in ___", I've written out the sigs for the
whole damn song. Keep in mind that this is an interpretation, as is all
written music. However, I am positive that I have not missed a beat or
counted wrong - the only thing that is subjective is how you decide to divide
the perceived beats into measures. I chose to do it a certain way based on
emphasis and phrasing in the song. However, I assure you that you will have
to make *many* time sig changes regardless of how you notate it.

Note: I included CD times as a reference. Also, I have grouped repeated
phrases in parentheses with a x3 (or some other number) afterwards to indicate
    the number of repetitions.

As a final note, I took a look at the "official" Wolf Marshall transcription
after I finished - he missed a few of the changes. Some of what he does is
merely a different interpretation of the grouping by measures - he groups many
of my 4/4 3/4 combinations as 7/4 - and there's nothing wrong with that.
However, in at least 3 parts he missed a subtle dropping of half a beat (an
insertion of 5/8 or the like). This is a very rhythmically complex tune, and
the syncopation and rhythmic misdirection evident even in the 4/4 parts is
    extremely cool. Enjoy!

    Blackened - Metallica

Performance Note: During the chorus there is a triplet figure (usually occurs
in the 6th measure of the chorus) at which the beat slows slightly. This is
still 4/4 time, it is just temporarily "streched out".

could be notated in a rather complex way - however, I feel that Metallica was
really thinking 4/4 4/4 2/4 and used visual communication to navigate the
pauses which occur in between the phrases)

Somebody a few issues back mentioned that (in their opinion) DT is the
best metal band, whereas Yes is (was?) the best progressive band. I can
go with you on the first part, but Yes the best prog band? Well, prog is
such a vague term. It's kind of like alternative (isn't it ironic? heh
heh). Alt-rock encompasses a whole bunch of different styles. (I don't
really like any of em, but still...Phish and Primus are usually grouped
under alternative, even though they sound nothing like, say, Pearl Jam
or Nirvana.) Yes is probably the best symphonic band. But what Yes did
and what a band like ELP did, for example, are radically different. ELP
is practically heavy metal sometimes, but Yes is kinda hippy-dippy.
Jethro Tull, King Crimson, DT, Marillion, Gentle Giant--come on...these
bands are so different it's hard to even say they're part of the same
genre. So watch out for generalizations like "Yes is the best of the
prog bands"--that's like saying Bach was the greatest composer of all
time. It doesn't make any sense.

Second NDTC part: the new Genesis album is a great way to fight
insomnia. Seriously, I could not make myself sit down and listen to the
whole thing. (I sat through The Wall! I have an attention span! ;) ) Tha
t band needs a real drummer, and somebody to smack Tony Banks around and
keeping him from playing the chord progression ad nauseum. It's
uniformly boring, with the new singer (he isn't bad, actually...if only
he had something to sing about) doing what he can with the mind-numbing
lyrics. All Banks does is hang out, and it sounds like he'd rather be
asleep. Rutherford at least tries, although not very hard. If you like
it, sorry, please don't flame me. The album is just awful, IMHO.
