Eight fuckin' bucks for three bands, two of which are DT and OLP? Man, is
that Novemnber 17th? I may have to take an early Thanksgiving break.

I just got home from, well, home, for the weekend. While there, my
girlfriend happened to say the words every 'Jammer loves to hear coming
from their girlfriend: "I like Dream Theater." Yowza! It's that "Hollow
Years", I'm telling you. Everybody, strict metalheads and diehard proggers
aside perhaps, loves it. Why isn't HY the U.S. single? And no cracks
    either...

    >> gullible), there's no such thing as 1/1 time. 2/2 is the lowest it
    >>goes, and that's called cut-time. You only use that for slow songs,
    >>typically, or otherwise there'd be mad flags all over the place. We're
    >>talking 64th note city.

    >easier to just count the half notes in 2/2 at 120 bpm.

All right, that's a stupid mistake there. There's no excuse for that one.
Brian Kirk is right and Brian Henderson, well, he's, er, not. "Eleven
years of piano lessons down the drain..."

    >And when you
    >start to approach 400 bpm, then you go to 1/1 and just count the

Haven't heard this one. Suppose it's possible, though I don't know any
songs faster than 400 bpm. Seems kind of 'excess' if you ask me. Bands
able to play that fast should donate some of their speed to slower, less
priviledged, bands. Like Pink Floyd. <grin> I'm gonna get nailed for
    that one!

it's pretty wild- after talking about the first 4 songs, i feel i could go
back and talk even more about them. but why bother?

bms- did anybody else here think of that big white zombie song? you know the
part- where james comes in? i don't know the name- it was the one on mtv a
few years back ("astrocreep", maybe?). and i don't know about y'all, but
derek smokes on this song- i think all us kevin-philes who were bitter about
derek can stop whining (this includes me, of course).

hell's- ......i fail to see how this song relates in any way to the one
before it. i never heard the old version, so this tune just seems like an
excuse to jerk off for 4 minutes before the next song. one nifty thing-
there's a section here (one of many on the album) at about 3:10 of the song
where they play this long unison lick that sounds real good. in school
recently, someone who noted my dt shirt replied "hey- they're a cool band-
they're the master of the unison lick." i now know what he meant.

lines- i like this song soooooo much that i'm willing to ignore the 80s rush
overtones throughout this song (i.e., main riff). i am thrilled by this song,
even though doug pinnick's appearance is little to get excited over. when i
heard he was doing guest vocals, i thought they MEANT it. they could have
pulled ANY hendrix-sounding guy off the street to have pulled this off. as
much as i like doug, i hope he's not getting royalties for this. at 9:45 of
this tune, anyone else awed by the interplay between the guys- all that slick
and cute stuff going on? yeah...

tamp- killer bass on this song. nice to see a song that is appropriate to the
lyrics. this is simply a well done piece.

jlmb- if living colour could reunite just once and do a video for a song, i'd
pay a lot of money for them to do this song. this is one of those "aggressive
rockers" that made the former band amazing. and personally, i think corey
glover might even convey aggressiveness better than labrie can....

anna lee- speaking of bringing back old bands from the dead, i'm glad to see
they cloned freddie mercury here. i believe these last 3 songs take a dt fan
for a ride- is this the same band that wrote "the mirror" and "under a glass
    moon?"

trial of tears- an incredible piece. myung just shines on this one. funny how
the best songs on the last 3 major albums were written by him, and at the end
(yes, i've said it before- "scarred" ends awake, for all intensive purposes).
he is the one keeping everything in the solos together. notice his use of
pedal tones- jp and derek's solos would sound meaningless without the bass.
myung's bass makes those 2 solos (more so in jp's solo) sound pretty
disssonant. and the end- this is up there with the ending to "ltl" and "acos"
strength-wise. i can't wait to see this done live.

    to be continued.

JP said "immature" while laughing if I remember correctly. JP defined
Met Part 2, as the most insane song they ever written, AND the band
purposely didn't have any musical constriction. Meaning that DT now has
to make themselves write something like this(I&W type music). It isn't
they're first choice for song writing. Therefore the band has "matured."
Meaning that their old stuff is "immature." :)

It looks like my earlier post concerning time sigs in Blackened didn't go
through, so I've broken it into two parts.. First part - text. Second part -
    time sigs! Here goes:

Well, since the discussion of time sigs in "Blackened" has continued, and
since people still say "it's mostly in ___", I've written out the sigs for the
whole damn song. Keep in mind that this is an interpretation, as is all
written music. However, I am positive that I have not missed a beat or
counted wrong - the only thing that is subjective is how you decide to divide
the perceived beats into measures. I chose to do it a certain way based on
emphasis and phrasing in the song. However, I assure you that you will have
to make *many* time sig changes regardless of how you notate it.

Note: I included CD times as a reference. Also, I have grouped repeated
phrases in parentheses with a x3 (or some other number) afterwards to indicate
    the number of repetitions.

As a final note, I took a look at the "official" Wolf Marshall transcription
after I finished - he missed a few of the changes. Some of what he does is
merely a different interpretation of the grouping by measures - he groups many
of my 4/4 3/4 combinations as 7/4 - and there's nothing wrong with that.
However, in at least 3 parts he missed a subtle dropping of half a beat (an
insertion of 5/8 or the like). This is a very rhythmically complex tune, and
the syncopation and rhythmic misdirection evident even in the 4/4 parts is
extremely cool. Enjoy! (to be continued)...

    Blackened - Metallica

Performance Note: During the chorus there is a triplet figure (usually occurs
in the 6th measure of the chorus) at which the beat slows slightly. This is
still 4/4 time, it is just temporarily "streched out".

0:00 Fade in - 4/4 time, played freely.

4:58 (faster tempo) 4/4 slight pause 4/4 slight pause 2/4 slight pause (This
could be notated in a rather complex way - however, I feel that Metallica was
really thinking 4/4 4/4 2/4 and used visual communication to navigate the
pauses which occur in between the phrases)
    5:02 4/4 x16
    5:22 5/8

me, i think it's pretty good, they haven't moved totally past Phil COllins
yet, and there are some duds on this disc (wtf is Alien Afternoon about?),
but overall, it's cool......"The Dividing Line" is so awesome it's

song.....and ray wilson's voice is pretty cool, too

some parts sound like Marillion, take that as you will.....one song, i
can't remember right now which one, I kept wanting to start singing
"afraid of sunlight".....itchy, you hear this yet?

but anyway, trying to throw a little review of it together....can I get
anyone to tell me what the song "small talk" sounds like? I can't quite
figure out what it reminds me of, in terms of a band or a song.....

sorry for the non-OFB talk, needed a little help on the side.......

            Salut mon copain!!

            Vous etes etudiant a Laval?

            Hehehehe

Good question...... I asked Portnoy that directly in March
when I met him and he felt that they would be here in late October or
    Early November.

However, it is now looking more like the new year.

They have plans to play Toronto, but he didn't mention
    anywhere else to me.

Keep watch this space for further info!!!

    >Has anyone heard of a band called Artension (are they good, DT style)?

I've heard them and was not impressed at all.

The singer has a voice very similar to that of Graham Bonnet
(Rainbow/Alcatrazz) which is gravelly and not particularly melodic.

If you are looking for something with some crunch and melody,
Check out some Threshold stuff. I REALLY like Psychedelicatessan and
Wounded Land is supposed to be an exceptional listen as well. They
have a new release but I'm not certain of the title?

Anyone have any info on this?

AS for Artension, save your money and watch for it in the
    delete bins....it'll be there soon.

The songs lack originality and come across as a really lame
    version of FII.

Well all this discussion about tour dates is great. It's
definitely shitty that DT is playing even smaller venues
now, in places that basically seem to suck to see a band in
            (according to what's been said).

As for the dates, don't we have contacts with the band on
here? Don't we have a DT OFFICIAL web site? It's surprising
that we have to hear from Ticketmaster and posters on the
walls of venues to find out where these guys are playing...

                    Definitely disappointing..........

Yep got the album last week (thanks Ryan), Ray's voice is great, pretty powerful and melodic, on the most part all the songs are great. The big let down for me is the mix. It is so dull and boring, on some of the songs the drums are so lame they sound like they could be programmed. I'd go see 'em live, that's if they ever bother to tour Australia, no one else does.

PS. Any Italian jammers tell us about two bands that I have heard great things about, SKYLARK and RHAPSODY ?

)At 09:0 Terry Bozzio is also possibly the best drummer in

I first heard about Terry Bozzio via FRANK ZAPPAS video "BABYSNAKES". What a GREAT DRUMMER! If you haven't seen this 'trippy' video...it's a must for Zappa and Bozzio fans.

Does anyone know how old Terry Bozzio was in this video. I believe the video was recorded in 1976. (not 100% sure).

Anyone looking for a copy of BABYSNAKES? Anyone up for a trade?

We are all talking about the somewhat "NON-promotion" Dream Theater from their label. IF THE RECORD/marketing people won't do it, WHY don't we?

We should pick shows like: DAVID LETTERMAN/MTV/LATE NIGHT/VH1..etc..etc.. and target them for faxes and letters giving some type of press release on the NEW CD and ask them to have them on the show. Like I said...target and bombard the media. WE CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN!!

Ok Ytsejamers...LEt's pick about 5 media groups and go after it!
