Big Wreck is a new band on Atlantic Records. Their debut album, "In Loving
Memory Of..." was just released on October 7th and their first single is
called "The Oaf." How did they hook up with DT? Well, the members of Big
Wreck met at the Berklee College of Music, so there's a connection there.
What do they sound like? Well, I'll tell you this: they ain't prog. They
remind me a little of STP (especially the singer's voice) and Soundgarden.
I'm not really a fan of those two bands, but what seperates Big Wreck from
them is their musicianship. I never thought I'd hear an alternative band
actually play their instruments with skill and precision (special kudos go
to their guitar player). They are also a lot catchier than those two
bands, utilizing some cool vocal hamonies. Plus, they've gotten rave
reviews in GUITAR WORLD. They also have a website that you can check out
at http://www.bigwreck.com. Definitely worth checking out.

Note Music Service has it listed as:
    John Myung
    Progressive Bass Concepts
    (VH0295) $49.95
Looks like Ritior (or something) put it out, it's the same as for Mike's
    Drum Vid., not REH.

    OK My question...
Anyone know why Raise The Knife was cut from FII??? Was it even going to
be on this album... is it on another album?

Ok , I think i know what Clark is talking about. Lets look at 2 completely
    different songs:

    Learning to Live

    and

    Smells Like Teen Spirit :)

Lets start with the simpler one...

    SLTS:

starts out with the main riff clean. Then the whole band comes in along
with the distorted guitar. First verse: bass plays main theme, simple drum
beat, 2 notes played on guitar every 2 measures. Vocals enter her as well.
Pre-Chorus: guitar plays note consecutively, and voice repeats a line over
and over again to build into the Chorus: theme played loud again,
different vocal melody... ending with that little weird thing. Repeat
verse, pre-chorus, chorus....Solo: verse played loud...guitar plays vocal
    melody. verse, pre-chorus, chorus.... finished.

    LTL:

Do I really have to explain it?:) Sorry, too time-taking, but i think one
can see where i'm getting at. The songs moves like a story, exchanging
various themes, and going thru so many moods...and when it finishes, you
    feel 'complete'.

So you see, your standard pop song can be very emotional, and you can get
into it. But lets face it, after a while it loses its touch. Once you get
'used' to the emotion, and the melody gets old it loses its appeal...now of
course, if you don't listen to it for a long time and forget some of it, it
    will gain its appeal again.

But songs like LTL have something more. Besides the emotion, and the good
melodies, there is constant mood-changing. There aren't any real
repetitions. Rather they interpret a section differently each time, doing
variations on it. This is similiar to what happens in classical music.
Rather than repeating a melody over and over again, they keep on changing
it, moving away from it, suggesting it, teasing the listener to make him
stay till the end when he'll be blasted head on by the whole thing.

THAT's what we're talking about here. Not just 'getting into the music' and
'emotion'. Of course those things are very important to music to...but I
prefer it when musicians arrange a song so the emotion is represented
    beter.

    Greetings ye 'jamanoids...

    Satu remarked:

    >it seems like people treasure the albums they first heard from
    >a band and the rest aren't that good anymore. I don't know your
    >opinion about this (I want to know what you think about this ok !)
    >but I think it's pretty much true. I mean, I first heard I&W
    >from DT and I think it's their greatest album. And the people
    >I know who heard Awake first, they think it's DT's best album.
    >And so on. I know lots of examples about this subject, but I won't
    >go on about it any longer. Have you noticed anything like this ?

    *ahem* <lecture voice>

I believe this is called the primacy effect. As Satu noted, it often
results in you liking the first disc you heard from a band so much that
it's your favorite. (Not to be confused with the recency effect, which
states that the most recent stimulus is the most powerful -- there's some
debate amongst psychologists as to whether the primacy effect or recency
    effect is stronger).

    </lecture voice>

Now, having said that, let me throw it out and say that it doesn't often
work that way with me personally. The first thing I heard from DT was
"Images & Words," followed by "Awake," but my favorite disc is "ACoS".
Well, my favorite song, anyway -- I often listen to just ACoS, then put in
some other disc after the song's done. But that disc gets more play than
any of my other DT discs. Same with Joe Satriani, my other major favorite.
First thing I heard was "Not of This Earth," but my favorite is and always
will be "Flying in a Blue Dream".

On the other hand, there've been plenty of others where my first album by
that artist is still my favorite -- David Arkenstone's "In The Wake of the
Wind" comes to mind, as does Metallica's "And Justice for All," Yngwie's
"Odyssey," and Nicholas Gunn's "The Sacred Fire."

Bottom line: I guess it's different for everybody, but I'd bet the "first
hearing is the best" is more common. :)

    Anybody else?

    Cheers,
    Phil

I only own Awake and I&W. I bought Awake first followed by I&W. I love
Awake, but on my first few listens of I&W it sounded to me like it was
missing something in comparison to Awake. But now I love them both, and I
couldn't choose between them if my life depended on it.

For the Australian's on the jam who don't have FII yet, my local
record store told me the Australian release date was on october 6th.
However due to a bad press of the CD the release date was changed. Only
god knows when we will see FII.

    see ya,
           Jason.

I could be wrong, but I think that the pantera intro being discussed
does, indeed actually include Mike's "jerking off" motion. Anyone
confirm this...or better yet, does anyone really care?? It's a rarity
when I can actually contribute some useful information to this jam
so right now I'm jumping on the opportunity. :)

How awesome is it that Mike is keeping us updated through the D-man!!
Now if only they could play a date in the Iowa, South Dakota, Nebraska
area...man it sucks going to college in the middle of nowhere!

I agree with Ptacek that all of JP's solos on FII seem totally improvised.
Why is this? I guess it's not bad, because JP's improv's generally
blow my mind (note "Bombay Vindaloo" in LATM), but it just seems kind
of strange that his solos would come across this way? Anyone have
    any ideas on this??

Hehehe okay... name me ONE media that doesn't get fucked when you
leave it in a car on a hot day. Your records, tapes, cds (Especially cd
cases! They turn into weird surreal sculptures!), DATs, disks, zip and
jaz cartridges... you name it. They all get warped by heat. Your
TicketMaster tickets will turn black if you leave them in direct sunlight
in a hot car (They won't be accepted at the door if they get blackened, so
think before you test it). This is the last thing I'd worry about when
deciding on your digital recording device.

I've never heard of anyone being able to hear the difference. I
can hear into really high frequencies, and I can't. I guess SOMEONE's got
to be able to, but chances are, you're not going to be that person.
ESPECIALLY if you're not using flat response headphones or flat response
monitor speakers. The brand and model of your MiniDisc player, receiver,
headphones, speakers, and even speaker wire are going to make a MUCH
bigger difference in the overall sound.

    > The only problem I see with minidiscs is that it is not full PCM 44.1khz so

Well, I wouldn't consider the MD as an option for pro recording.
It's always better to record at the maximum possible sound quality...
if you can master at 24 bit, you're gonna do it.
What it IS is a way to get re-recordable cd quality that you can
use instead of a shitty walkman, so you can hear a bunch of your favorite
tunes without bringing all your cds with you. I think it'd be reasonably
useful as a bootlegging tool too, but there's no advantage I can think of
that it has over the DAT in that respect.

I have a copy of JM instructional video and I'd be happy to copy it
for you if you send me a blamk VHS and return postage. I would'nt suggest
buying it because it's REALLY boring and it really doesn't help your
playing much at all. It is just a 30 minute collection of scales and
triads, how to tune the six string bass (oh, didn't know that), and a few
short jams with Derek and Mike. It's not worth it.

I've heard a 'rumor' and I'd like to see if anybody out there can verify
it. A friend of mine was talking to a DJ friend of his, who said that all
the older King Crimson albums were going to be re-remastered. The story
was relayed to me, and I relay it to you, the Commonwealth of 'Jam. Is
this true? If so, I'd have to say that's some good news. They were'are
some of the worst remasterings I'd ever heard - muddy and recorded too
    low/quiet.

    To bed I tread...

    >TSO is also working on a second album that is not Christmas based, but

So they don't want to compete against themselves in December, but they
    don't mind in January?
