don't *ever* listen to Chris Merlo when he gives advice about women (even

Wow. Maybe to you... but UAGM is EXTREMELY catchy to me (and no, I'm not=
just defending it for the bad ass shred solo)
Interesting though. I guess it just proves that not everyone hears music=
     in the same way.

     with that statement.

ROFL How is the power undeniable? If someone just hears it and thinks=
it's a bunch of whiney high pitched noise, and they'd get more out of=
their gritty southern country blend, I think they'd deny the "power". I=
don't think you can quantify what you mention above. I do think that it=
sounds as though you're disqualifying music because you yourself don't=
like it. Remember, even though you may not hear the worth in a piece of=
music, though you are a musician of some experience, I understand, doesn't=
mean that it doesn't touch a multitude of listeners. You have to train=
your ear to listen to different types of music. Bafu himself mentioned=
that he just can't listen to Webern and Shoenberg, because it grates on=
his ears. I tend not to be able to deal well with female opera voices...=
they grate on my ears. Some people can't deal with rap, in any way (I=
think KorgX3 is one of these people); and some people can't handle DT for=
these same reasons (Several friends of mine, and my father, who is a=
     musician of 25+ years).

Hahaha! Not unlike Lemur Voice, the accent itself makes it catchy to me.=
I have zero explanations for this.
Understand, though, that Angra's vocalist is doing a Rob Halford=
impression on that tune. He sounds nothing like that on their other=
music. If you're a fan of heavier music, the rule is "Go for Angel's=
Cry". If you like things more akin to Images and Words, "Get Holy Land".=
Either way, you will not be disappointed.

    >Also what are the jams opinions of the following:
    >
    >1) Conception??

Anything before their new album is great for most DT fans. Sort of a=
weird singer... almost like a little bit scratchy Geoff Tate... GREAT=
voice. Excellent guitars. Only bummer is that the bassist is picking on=
     the albums I have.

    >2) Cynic??

This band was a freak of nature. A band that should not have been. They=
only released one album, and the musicianship is staggering. Sean Malone,=
a closet Ytsejammer, kills on the bass, if you can listen deeply enough to=
hear it. Some of how he compliments the music is just staggering. Great=
fretless work. As great as he is, he isn't the most horrific and=
devastating force on the album. That would be Sean Reinert on the drums.=
There is no other. :) He puts Neil back on the shelf with all the other=
shampoo bottles. He sends Portnoy back to school. If Zonder has 4=
invisible arms, Reinert has 12. Okay... enough kiss ass. Lemme tell you=
the downsides, assuming you're something like the average Ytsejammer.
The compositions are extremely dynamic. So much so, that it may be hard=
for you to grasp everything that's going on, and it may be tough to really=
catch onto the songs. The lyrics are very cool, but way out there. The=
vocals are a thrashy/death-like growl. If you tuned the average death=
metal voice up about 3 steps, you'd have half of the vocals right there.=
I, personally, love it. The other half of the vocals are done with=
chanting or vocorder. Since I've been way too nice in giving descriptions=
of the Chapman Stick (also used on this album by Malone) several times,=
only to see someone in the next jam ask "What the heck is a Chapman Stick"=
I'll give you one of many addresses that may help you find out what it is:=
      http://www.metacrawler.com
That's a search engine. It can help you find things on this vast virtual=
     library that is the web.

    >3) Arcturus??

I don't expect the average jammer to get into this. It's what would=
happen if Black Metal and Prog collided. AWESOME guitarist. You'll want=
to listen first. I bet you can use that "internet" thing to find some=
sound clips of the band if you try.

You're not kidding. I know this one guy who buys every magazine that even
mentions Madonna in duplicate -- one to read, one to preserve in mint
condition for posterity, I suppose. His CD collection consisted of nearly
200, of those, only 2 were *not* Madonna (studio albums, singles,
best-of's, bootlegs, soundtracks, whathaveyou), and both of those he got
for free. Every inch of his room was plastered with posters of
you-know-who and he skipped school the day she had her baby to videotape
the reports on TV. Anything anyone might possibly know about her, he
knows. Now *that* is a diehard.

Upon review of the info at this link, the question arises in my mind.
Their new studio album (not "Keys To Ascension II") is called "Yes". They
already have an album by the same name. WHY?! Good lord! Granted, only
two of the bandos on the first album are still in it today, but still...
Do you suppose Yes has an inside joke about making their album titles
confusingly similar? Lessee, there's "Yesstory", "Yessongs", "Yesshows",
"The Yes Album", "Yesterdays", "Classic Yes", "Yes" (2X)... More? Probably.

On every album since WDADU, there has been at least one song that I just
can't stand. Surrounded (followed closely by Another Day), Innocence Faded
(followed closely by Lifting Shadows), and Anna Lee (followed closely by You
Not Me). But on WDADU, every song is perfect. It wins again.

I think I am the last person on the list to get FII. Well, it doesn't
matter anyway because I got the Japanese copy. Now, let me say, I DO NOT
think the band sold out nor do I think they've gone alternative HOWEVER,
I do think this album is totally different and hard for me to adjust to.
Maybe it needs time to grow on me but even songs you guys praise such as
New Millenium, Trial Of Tears and Just Let Me Breathe do not stick out
in my mind. The tracks that did stick out are the extremely catchy You
Not Me, Burning My Soul, Lines In The Sand, and Hell's Kitchen. I think
Hollow Years has to be the best ballad of the year in my opinion. TAMP
is a difficult song to get into, not so much because of the latin beats,
it just is in general because even the demo is hard to get into. Speak
To Me does have a little Cure influence in it and is an okay song at
    best.

    Savatage- The Wake Of Magellan

HOLY FUCK- I was floored by this album. I was expecting a Dead Winter
Dead Part 2 with all slower-paced songs but this is the heaviest album
we've heard from these guys since Edge Of Thorns. Yes, it is a rock
opera but the only thing this has in common with DWD is that it is a
rock opera, Jon sings on 2 songs and they use counterpart in 2 songs.
Hourglass is the slowest song on the album and even that is not a
ballad, its more of a progressive type song that goes through a little
bit of everything (ballad, heavy metal, counterpoint, etc). Zak's
singing ranks up there with EOT and Jon's voice kicks ass all over
Paragons Of Innocence however Jon didn't do that great on Another Way
(but it still rocked). On Complaint In The System, they use a totally
new effect on the chorus- you'd have to hear it to believe and on
Morning Sun, Zak is accompanied by Chris or Al using a folk-y type
acoustic guitar giving the song a happy tone. Enough said, buy it now if
    you haven't already

    Don

    Greetings ye 'jamanoids...

    Chris and Mike remarked:

    >> Because of things like this, I'm inclined to give even the most bass >> ackwards prog fans a chance to explain why their narrow minded views are >> right... usually I find that these people are all intelligent, and not as >> set in their ways as you may think. > > "and the truth shall set ye free." :) I do think that getting on the >Jam is the single best thing a DT fan can do for themselves, if for no >other reason than to see that their own struggles to identify with >today's music are echoed by others like them.

Nuh-uh. Properly written, it's: "...and the truth shall make you flee." :) Getting on the 'Jam is the single best thing a DT fan can do for themselves, true -- but because it exposes you to a hellishly big amount of music that you'd probably never have heard of otherwise!

Case in point: Yesterday I got a shipment from Dream Disc with Symphony X's "Divine Wings of Tragedy", Superior's "Behind", Angra's "Holy Land", and Crimson Glory's "Transcendence". (Not being satisfied with that, I then went out and bought "Merry Axemas." There were two copies in the store, and the girl helping me spent fifteen minutes searching for the damn things. I went to her manager and recommended her for a raise. She likes DT, too....heh heh heh). These albums kick; I think Symphony X is my fave so far. (Why'd I wait so long to get these? I dunno).

While I'm on the subject of Symphony X, does anybody else think vocalist Russell Allen sounds a great deal like Ronnie James Dio? He has his own style, but is very similar in range and tone; a touch less growly though.

Crimson Glory's "Transcendence": AAAAAAAHHHH!!! 80's Metal Glam Poofy Hair! Ged, what a horrifying sight. Still a good disc.

    >> any of you speakers of Hungarian out there interested in teaching me how >> to say "i want to rip off your underwear with my teeth"? i'd appreciate >> it... :)

I don't know about this one, but the only German phrase I know is "I dance with the Platypus of Death." Sounds incredibly amusing when spoken quickly.

    Cheers, Phil

    Roger,

Cynic are a band from Florida. They formed and only recorded one album called "Focus". Its kind of a jazzy metal thing. use of Electronic drums (very) occaisonally, a Chapman Stick (Which I still don't know what that is!) and excellent jazz drumming. Paul Masvidal (guitar) & Sean Reinert(Bass??) who played on Death's "Human" are in the band and they are both excellent players and PM produces some well structured & fast lead guitar. Overall it is hard to describe but I love it. A good friend of mine who is heavily into DT, FW Stratovarius, Blind Guardian etc also loves it so I reccomend it!

The band have split now but I have heard of maybe a new band forming called "Portal". Not to sure about this though...

    Cheers Paul

    http://www.trans-siberian.com

Also you can order online from Music Blvd, Cd Now, CD Universe, ... etc.

Atlantic will be promoting this album heavily this year, even more heavily than last year. They have already produced 350,000 CDs which should bring TSO into Gold Status this year.

Hope to see many of you at the Savatage shows this week!!!

I have the design for the back of the new ytseshirt on my page, everybody go take a look and gimme your opinion! it's at www.j51.com/~mrasiel/another.htm

Also, quick html question, I'm sure at least 80 billion of you know this, so if just *one* of those answers me, I'll be content: How do you get it so when you type in the URL the HTML file automatically comes up? I have to keep the file w/the address, or you'd see a funky FTP listing. Anyone?

Is Elton John honestly doing a John Denver tribute album? Picked this rumor up somewhere. That's a laugh. Not the death part, just the blatant capitalism of it all. Peasants, put down your pitchforks and revolt! Nah, you'd better not. The Illumanati know where I live after all, and I can't be seen stirring up rebellion in such a public forum...

[Compensatory Note: To the more literal minded, I am not an anarchist. I've seen how dumb people can be when left to do their own thing.]

In regards to the Tempest issue, I'd wager that a good deal of Magna Carta bands are not progmetal, or are, at most, 'fringe'. Take Cairo for example. I'd say that's more oldschool symphonic style prog than metal. I'd also wager I'm the only one on this list with a *signed* copy of a non-Magna Carta released Tempest album. The truly bizarre thing about it is that I bought it at a used CD store. I say "stolen", but that's just me.

In further Yes news, "Keys To Ascension II" is being released the day I go to see them. How's that for nuts? How's that for the complete depletion of all my spending money?!

Oh, and DTC, lest I forget...

HEY U GUYS DOES ANYBOD-EE KNOW WHEN IS DT PLAYING BUMBLEFUCK?!?!?!

<grin> Couldn't resist the temptation. But they'd better announce some east coast dates, or I'll be bustin' some heads. And for those who haven't met me, I'm a terrifying physical presence. 6'4" of pure skeleton, skin, and gristle! Don't mess with me, dudes, or you might wind up with a pointy elbow in your eye. I've had them artificially sharpened, you know... Yo. East-coast.
