If you like Tempest, I highly recommend checking out Boiled in Lead, a
Minnesota Celto/folk/country/tinge-of-punk band that's been around for
15yrs now. They have a homepage at <http://www.omnium.com/bil/bil.html>
that has some samples you can check out. My fave album: "Orb". 4 excellent
musicians working together (including one of the best percussionists I know
    of).

I completely agree with the above. Kevin was an integral part of DT's
sound, so they obviously will never be quite the same band again now that
he's gone. I think Derek is a great keyboardist and a worthy replacement,
and I think he brings something new and interesting to DT, but I still
personally prefer Kevin's style (and songwriting).

Well, when I had a girlfriend :-) and showed her that compilation
tape (thank you very much for those of you who have contributed with the
songlist). Two or three days later, I asked her what she thought about the
tape and she said that she liked some of the things I put there (Rush's

    of repetitive. :-)

Dude...Scarred!!! The guitar solo actually gets me aroused! I fail to see how a guitar/JP fan can find that solo catchy...

Well I finally picked up FII recently. Yes, I know I know, I'm slow. :) All I can say is Wow. The production is awesome. I've read how some people think certain parts sound like so and so.

Doesn't the whole vibe of Hell's Kitchen sound simular (not copying) to a couple songs from Stuart Hamm's first solo Cd "Radio Free Albemuth". I love the ambience of it. Goes really well with animation clips.

The beginning of 'Trial of Tears' sort of reminds me of the beginning of 'Ah Music Viacom' by Eric Johnson. The melody 'Its raining, raining, on the streets of NYC,...." sounds like something but I can't remember. Does anyone remember a simular melody from something?

John Myung scores another 10+ in the lyrics department.

    Hello, all.

I wanted to give a quick review of the radio show that finneus gauge id at WVIA studios in Scranton last night.

    they were amazing.

they performed every track off of their debut album, more once more. they also played 3 new songs (state of the art, one inch of the fall, golden pretzel - my personal favorite) which were amazing! the band was inb the best form i have EVER seen them. Laura Martin (the vocalist, for those of you who don't know...) impressed me the most. She's really starting to come into her own as a vocalist and as the "frontperson" of the group.

After 2 hours of seeing them kick alot of ass, i can happily say that Finneus Gauge is probably one of the best prog bands to come along in quite a long time. If you can see them, i HIGHLY reccommend it. if you don't have their cd, SHAME ON YOU! go to http://ghostland.com/finneus.html RIGHT NOW and buy it. it's _that_ good.

This is more directed at the band, or their promoters, or even Mike since he reads the Jam. Why aren't you guys coming to Northern California for the tour? There are tons of great venues, and tons of fans up here, who are now going to have to drive their asses down to LA (or SD in my case since I am not 21+!). I was talking to my friend and he said that for both Images and Awake you guys had NorCal shows, why not this time?

Wow, that's pretty strange. About 20 minutes before I read this message I put in this exact tape - The Limelight - New York 3/4/93. I've got a great quality copy if you want it. :) Wasn't there a CD boot of this available as well? That's the only time I don't like CD boots - when the cassette version is very readily available for trade with others. This, Summerfest '93, and a few others seem to be in every DT boot traders' collections.

WOW! I could not know LESS what you mean here. UaGM has always struck me; right from the intro, which blew me away first time I heard it, to the guitar solo, which to this day may be my personal JP favorite (love ToT, though--very Holdsworth). Scarred has just incredible biting lyrics, and is such a well-structured song, especially the unison section before the solo. And JLMB is, to me, the ballsiest song heavy-wise that OFB has penned to this date. I'd have to say these three are among my personal faves.

    >BUT... I just can't see Derek ever writing something that rivals Eve, WFS, >or SDV. Or some of Kevin's keyboard parts within other songs (like OAMOT).

Ummm... well, it depends on taste, I guess. Both brilliant, both with different approaches. You confuse me, because you acknowledge that you can't compare 'em, and then you basically do. "Rivals" is a tough word there, and I'm not sure you didn't want a different one. True, Derek won't be writing something like OAMOT, but on the flip side, you wouldn't have gotten stuff like, well, JLMB from Kevin.

    >Anyway, Derek is still cool, and DT still rule, but I don't like hearing >this "Derek's playing is great, he totally fills the void", etc. stuff >that some people have said, because I really don't think you can compare >Derek's playing to Kevin's. Derek's playing IS great. He DOES fill the void. As Kevin fit in perfectly in WDADU and I&W, so too does Derek fit perfectly in FII. Kevin left because the band was changing. I listen to Awake, in fact, and to this day I still believe that there already was a void; the role of the keys simply didn't at times match the direction of the music. Kevin knew it. On FII, the keyboard role does match the music. Of course the role is different than in the past. So's the music.

Hey Trevor and all you Ytsejammers!

    >Merry Axemas kicks ass! I couldn't have said it better! If you need any other really "rocking" Christmas music check out Gary Hoey's "Ho ho Hoey" Christmas album. I mean Gary's great on Endless Summers II soundtrack and Bug Alley, but this album is pretty good Christmas music. I also read/ heard something about a reissue of Transiberian orchectra's "Christmas Eve and other Stories" (this one has some of the Savantage guys on it- which reminds does anyone know where I can find the new Savantage album? It's called The Wake of Magellan) I know, it's barely Halloween and here we are recommending Christmas music...hey, it'll be here sooner than you think! Anyway some of my personal highlights on the album-

    >JOE SATRIANI- SILENT NIGHT/HOLY NIGHT JAM I think all guitar players can really apprciate the Holy Night Jam...the only thing better than listening to this song, would be watching Joe perform it...how about another G3 show for Christmas? (wouldn't that be great!) >STEVE VAI- CHRISTMAS TIME IS HERE Ah, Mr. Vai...is there more to say? I actually think he's pretty subdued on this song, if I can ever say that about Steve Vai! He's not Italian for nothing! (he dove from the stage into the crowd when I saw him live last December for the 'Fire Garden' tour...almost landed on top of me...almost!) >ALEX LIFESON- THE LITTLE DRUMMER BOY Ah, getting to another one of my favorite guitarists- Alex of course plays the mysterious and somewhat meloncoly intro to this tune. This must be some of that leftover meoloncoly and mischief from the Victor project (which reminds me to ask, is there really another Victor album due out soon? I have heard that rumor, or the possiblity of a new studio album and tour from Rush in '98..they are already ready to "top" TFE so soon?...wow!)

Well, enough of me rambling on...guitar players just tend to do those sorts of things...especially when talking about guitars and guitarists...BTW, I haven't been keeping track of all the dates for the FII shows, I know there are 2 in Ohio at the end of this month, does anyone know if there are any more in the NY/ PA/ IL or the Ohio area that have been listed recently? Trying to get to see as many shows as I can for my favorite band...at least I get to see them real soon right here in Ohio!

    Thanks for your time!
