I'd like to add a little to what Rogerio said. yes there are ppl who don't
really appreciate music very much...but that's just because they have other
interests. For example, i have very little interest for the visual arts. If
it looks nice, I'm happy with it. And yet music is pretty much my life.

So i amagine there are ppl that are the complete opposite...and others with
completely different tastes...and the 'hollow' ones that Rogerio mentioned.
So don't expect everybody to fall over for DT...they probably feel like
that with something else...maybe somebody else's music, or something
    totally unassociated woth music.

Indeed. This version is amazing. When I heard the "when I go back

    song...

Which reminds me: Have anyone noticed that in the "Live in Tokyo" video,
the very end of TTT is the 6/4 part from the end of TKH?

    >But on the other hand, do you think the average country > fan really does get as much out of that music as some of us do out of DT?

Let me put this question into another scenario and see if you still agree with it. We have two people, a computer programmer and a truck driver. Do you think the truck driver can enjoy his work as much as the programmer can?

    > Now I'm not saying that > anyone needs to know what a quarter note is, or understand odd time-sigs or > polyrhythms, or even really analyze the music at all, to appreciate it the way a > musician does. Lord knows there are thousands of musicians who know > hundreds of times more about music theory than I do, but I wouldn't concede > that they neccesarily get even more out of music than I do (though some of > them probably do). But no one who listens to country or rap has ever said > ANYTHING to me that really convinced me that it was very important to > them at all.

And just because the internal intricasies of the music are beyond their comprehension, the music doesn't mean as much to them?

I'm not disagreeing with your post. I'm one of those people who cannot listen to music in the "background"; I pause the CD player when I leave the room so I don't miss anything, even if it's a song I've heard a thousand times before. I just think it's kind of elitist to think less of people simply because music isn't as important to them as it is to me. Everyone has loves in their life. I have my family, computers, and music (pretty much in that order :)). Someone else would have a different list of things, but the feelings they have for them could be just as strong, or *stronger*, than mine.

Shit Clarke, that was a long post but personally I can see exactly where you're coming from.

DT is a style of music that you *can* get fanatical about because there is so much more to it than just apparent emotional qualities on the outside. DT goes deeper than that. It's like someone saying ' yeah this song's really deep and emotional cause the lyrics are about when his best friend died...'.

These sort of emotions and the ones we feel when we listen to DT are two separate schools of thought altogether.

This strange phenomenal effect that DT has on all of us is the reason why we have the JAM. It's the reason why a petition went out to get DT's new album released, it's the reason why bootlegs are created and then sold and traded amongst fellow DT fans, it's the reason why we have a thousand DT fan pages on the Web. You don't see that devotion for many other genres of music.

In my opinion however, there's no point in trying to explain these deep, stirring-of-the-subconscious emotions into some who listens to rap or dance or country music. If they can't hear it, (sorry, *feel* it) then let them be. They don't know what they're missing, but you do !, and it's from this viewpoint that most DT fans cannot help but declare themselves superior to most eMpTyV music listeners because they believe they can achieve more emotional qualities and spark much deeper, more creative and artistic inspirations from DT's music.

It is hard to sit back and comprehend someone listening to DT and saying it's crap and then turning around and listening to a Puff Daddy album or something like that, but it's something that music of the prog. and other related genres has always suffered from so there's really nothing you can do to make a million Oasis fans 'see the light' and suddenly start buying copies of Awake and I&W.

As long as we've got DT continually delivering us awe-inspiring music, then who cares if " Hommie-G-wit'-da-flava-2-hyped-in-da-hous " doesn't like it ?

    Luke.

if you listen verrrrrrrrrrrrry carefully to derek's part (it's really low, mix-wise) at about 8:30 in "lines in the sand", one may say to oneself, "hmm....this sounds curiously familiar to the keyboard part kevin played at 3:14 of '6:00'".

    Hi

Apologies if this has already been discussed -

Does anyone think that there is a connection between the King's X song 'Lies in the sand' and LitS? The lyrics seem to be unrelated to me, but it seems like too much of a coincidence that Doug P. sings on LitS. -- Chip

    Hi again

    Some thoughts about JLMB:

First, "Just close your mind you can find all you need with your eyes" - I love that, reversing the line from TTT.

Also, at 3:39-3:41 the riff sounds to me like a snippet of the Wait for Sleep/LtL riff; seems like Derek plays with that theme in his solo part before then. (BTW, I hear he has a really big organ) Maybe I'm just imagining the connection, but that's one of my fav things about DT, their reuse of a theme in different songs. It reminds me of the echoes of Cygnus x1 on Hemispheres.

Finally, the "Calculated, Formulated" part. I don't mean this in a bad way at all, but feel like I'm hearing a little bit of the rap MP listens to. I could be completely wrong, maybe it was KJLB's idea to sing that line that way, but the way I imagine it - MP wrote those words with a definite rhythm in mind.

this message is covered by a big IMHO, of course -- Chip
