The LATM version of TKH is great, minus the vocals. James LaBrie, from the stuff I've heard, has never done a better job than Dominici on WDADU songs. People have criticized Dominici for being 'weak' in a live setting, yet LaBrie seems to be a bit weak. I contend that Dominici was in fine showing when I last saw him in 1989. Regardless, the main point, IMO, is LaBrie should stick to post-Dominici songs. He just doesn't sound right. - Dan

Hi all! Just to let you all know, the page at: http://www.goodnet.com/~durnik/
Has been updated. I have html-ized the update, separating out the how-to-order stuff onto the Prism Records Easy Order Form. The CD update info itself should be considerably clearer now.
There's also a big note about bounced checks, but this doesn't affect everyone, just first-time customers. Take care all!!

All musicians here should check out http://www.resrocket.com
The basic idea, is that you can jam with ppl thru the internet. Pretty cool huh? You can try it out for a month, after that, if you want to stay, its about 5$ a month. You can form bands and stuff like that. I'll have to wiat till i get a new hard drive to get the software, but i figure all you ppl that cant fullfill your musical destinies where you live might enjoy this:)
BTW, I agree 100% w/ your last post, Clark Abel (Abel and ready to Rock and Roll). (a nice pat in the back to those who know where i got that from:) ) But just the same way, i doubt DT will ever move me as much as Stravinsky's Rite of Springs. It's all relative.

Christopher, I think it may be safe to say that most of us here have been through this. I myself have found this is a circular argument with some people. You just cant change their minds however hard you may try. They are on their own "band wagon" with the rest of the "alterna sheep". All I can say is keep trying. Maybe you will reach someone and start a mega chain reaction? I know where I live now (the south) its hard to reach the rednecks, maybe its because they can connect with their type of music a lot easier because they have menial and more than mundane lives and really dont care to think much about actual feeling and care that goes into making such masterpeices as DT's music. Maybe we can just peg tham as complete and utter morons and hope they will see the light before they die? I dont know, but in any case please go easy on them when you find the machine to strap the non beleivers to. OK? It may lessen the hard time you do in prison.
Best of luck to you in your quest, Kathy

Anna Lee is about incest, about a child that has been sexually abused by her family. I don't know the exact words, but this is basically what James LaBrie told in an interview to the brazilian rock magazine "Rock Brigade". Any brazilian jammer who has this months's issue can confirm this (I don't have it, I read it in the book store).
BTW, JLB also mentions that was HIS idea to bring Doug Pinnick to record the vocal parts in LITS.
Hope this helps,

I've had this conversation with many people relating to many bands. They just look at you real stupidly and then say "Yeah, I like Green Day too". I just want to scream. But the reality is if you tied them down and playedit to them they would resent it even more than if they had never heard it. I look at these people and, friends or not, decide that it's better that they don't know. They would most likely tarnish the bands reputation by mentioning them in the same sentence as Alanis Morrisette anyway. If they do come to there senses of there own accord and stumble across DT etc. Good on 'em. I say this because I think I was one of those people when I was 16. You know Pearl Jam, Soundgarden etc. But I was into them in 91 before it was cool. by the time the world discovered them I was listening to Australian Death metal like Alchemist & Armoured Angel. I still like all this stuff but I find myself looking back on it as very limited compared to DT. This is a kind of musical evolution I believe.

Fri, 10 Oct 1997 23:18:29 -0500 (CDT) Well, it's been a while since I officially posted to the jam about the Ytsejam shirts, and a lot has happened since then. For instance, Tuesday, I totalled my car. But enough about me....
The info in this update is not accurated as far as the number of shirts remaining. I will try to get that corrected soon, but for now I just want to get this out so people can get shirts before the upcoming DT shows. For the record, ONLY L and XL shirts are left, there are no more M, XXL, or XXXL shirts. However, these shirts are larger than normal and hardly shrink, so if you fit comfortably in a XXL, you could probably wear the XL.
** IMPORTANT ** IMPORTANT ** IMPORTANT ** IMPORTANT ** IMPORTANT **
If you are planning on wearing this Ytsejam shirt to one of the new DT shows, send your check *TODAY*. I'm not kidding. If the post office hustles and gets it to me in the normal 2-3 days, I should be able to have your shirt to you about a week after you send the check, which still cuts it close. As usual, foreign orders will take longer...
Anyway, on with the update:
+-------------------------------------------------------+ | | | Ytsejam T-Shirts | | | +-------------------------------------------------------+
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** new since last update * new in last two updates ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
** Well, it's been quite a while. I've probably gone four months without ** reading a jam (although they are still arriving in my inbox daily), and ** have posted very scarsely. A lot has happened since May, but things are ** back in order finally.
** First things first. I am no longer at Mizzou, I have transfered to UMSL. ** This means a new web site, new email address, and new mailing address and ** phone number.
The XXXL, XXL, and M shirts are sold out.
I did manage to make the money to make the final payment in time for the shirts. From this point on, the shirts will be going towards paying back my loan for the downpayment. Thanks again to everyone who has ordered, and all of you who plan to.
I would just like to take this chance to thank everyone who has been so supportive of the shirts... It's nice to know that my work on this project is appriciated. And special thanks to Chris Hailey for the amazing artwork.
======== Web Page ========
There is a web page online, complete with ordering instructions, facts and figures, comments on the shirts, actual scans directly off the shirts, a list of paid orders, and a mini FAQ. Check it out at:
http://www.prognosis.com/gabbo/ in the Dream Theater section.
I owe a million to Chris Ptacek for the web space, it means a lot.
======= Details =======
The Ytsejam shirts are two sided prints. The front of the shirt features a *full color* raytraced graphic from Chris Hailey in Washington. The graphic is a beautifully done scene with the Majesty logo floating behind a group of marble columns on a tile floor with a wide view of space visible behind.
The back of the shirt is in a solid light blue color. The majority of the design is a huge Majesty logo, framed by the Dream Theater title at the top, the mailing list address on the sides and "Ytsejam" at the bottom. Below that is "Internet Mailing List" between two more Majesty logos.
The current lot of shirts is 217 (they printed up more than I asked for, but I'm not complaining). If those run out, and demand is high enough, I may run another with a slightly different design.
You can check out all of the details, as well as a preview of the shirts at: http://www.prognosis.com/gabbo/ in the Dream Theater section.
======= Pricing =======
The cost of the shirts is $16 each. The shirt is damn close to concert quality, so $16 is a steal (last Dream Theater concert I was at charged $23 for a shirt!). If you are picking the shirt up from me directly the $16 price stands. If you can't get the shirt in person, you can order one through the mail for $20 to cover shipping.
I spoke with the people at the post office and I've decided to set the shipping prices outside the USA at $9, for a total of $25. I realize this is damn expensive for a tshirt, and I'm sorry. If individual prices are signifigantly less expensive, I will gladly return a check for the balance.
The rundown: L or XL shirt, picked up: $16 L or XL shirt, mailed in the US: $20 L or XL shirt, mailed outside the US: $25
============ Availability ============
Size: Sold: Reserved: Remaining: Total: ----- ----- --------- ---------- ------ M 4 0 1 5 L 32 0 6 38 XL 85 0 61 146 XXL 24 0 0 24 XXXL 4 0 0 4 ------ ----- --------- ---------- ------ Totals 149 0 68 217
======== Ordering ========
The shirts are open to mail ordering now. Mail orders will be shipped out every Wednesday via Priority Mail for US orders, and airmail for all others. Checks and money orders will be cashed before the order goes out, most likely on Monday. So far, mail orders have gone well, the only problem I have had has been with the bank, not the post office, so don't worry about your orders. All US orders are insured for the amount paid for the shirts and shipping, and insurance on airmail depends on the country and other aspects.
To order, send a check or money order for the proper US dollar amount (see pricing above) to:
Pat Griffin 6581 Bradley Ave <-- Note the change of address! St. Louis, MO 63139
Make them payable to Pat Griffin, and remember this in US dollars.
Be sure to include: Your name. Email address. Mailing address. Phone number. Quantity of shirts you want to order. The size of each. Whether this order is for pickup for mail order.
I will keep you up to date on the status of the shirts through email.
============= Miscellaneous =============
Remember that all the info can be found online at: http://www.prognosis.com/gabbo/ in the Dream Theater section.

Hi, All...
About Clark's message on how the music is important to us and how the people into only pop, I think that he hit some interesting points (I agree with many of them, but I don't agree with the fact that you told the girl that the music you hear touches you deep in your soul -- the music she hears can touch her as deep as Image & Words touches us; of course, it may be very unprobable, but who knows).
But I also think that Clark has failed to emphasize the fact that people listen to music for different reasons (and which I think that I'll also fail to emphasize).
We may listen to music only for instantaneous ocupation and to have a subject to talk about with our friends (many people that I know listen to music because they are so hollow that they wouldn't have something to talk about if it weren't for music). So, music is a major role in society(as television has). People don't want to seem futile to their friends/people with whom they live.
But we may also listen to music for another purpose: to the enlightening, edification of our spirits, our souls. This kind of listeners is the kind that hears everything with his/her headphones, re-hears the same point in music 10 times to understand what is going on etc. These listeners are critical to what they hear. They don't simply hear because music is a vehicle that will insert them in the society. They hear because they want to discover newer things. And since they need newer things, they scrutinize the songs, they need complex things to think about. Songs that will bring something with them besides simple entertainment.
I think that most 'jammers fall onto the second category.
So, Clark, I think that you won't succeed in trying to convert many people to hear to Images & Words or Mozart's 41st symphony. They have different purpose while listening to music. The paradigm is completely different.
It's a pessimistic view of the world society, but it won't change (I could talk a lot about this point that I'm making here, but I since it would be very long, I won't post it to the list).
Hope someone can prove me wrong, Roger...

Bem, minha deducao nao estava entao completamente errada, porque eu pensei que Anna Lee era sobre alguem forcar uma crianca a prostituir-se. Naturalmente, parte da musica reflete sobre as consequencias disto na crianca.

Well, I don't remember if I've sent this or not, but I'll post it again. The sound quality of WAYN in "Guitar Talkin'" is good. Between studio quality and the sound quality of "To Live Forever" from Mike Bahr's "When Dream and Today Unite".
Soundwise, it's the best track on "Guitar Talkin'", along with "Raise the Knife" and "Final Jamming" (well, the James' audition demos are interesting, but don't sond very good, since there's a lot of hiss and lack of higher frequencies).
