Hey, jammers. Just bought a new CD by a Magna Carta band called Royal
Hunt. They may have other releases, but if you can, and even if you can't,
buy this CD from them. Imagine a cross between Queen's Ryche, Shadow
Gallery, and Transiberian Orchestra without the christmassy feel. Maybe I
am thinking of sabatage, or however you spell that band's name that was
involved in TSO. Anyway, this CD sounds quite good and I would hartily
recommmmend it to any progressive metal fan. BTW, can anybody send me the
latest Magna Carta news about upcoming releases, the web site seems to be
    always out of date. Thanks.

I went to the store today, the place where I got the Royal Hunt CD, (see
my other post) and asked about Mary Xmas and the guy at the counter said
that they didn't get it in yet, they'dprobably get it with their xmas
stuff. This sucks. NOw, the next two monthsare really going to be CD
intensive. Mary Xmas, two yes CDs, and some Magna Carta releases as well?
I will not be able to afford Xmas gifts.

How about the 'Lie' bassline reused in Lines In The Sand at 10:16, as well
as the silent man guitar part in erotomania, and the SDV piano part in
voices? Apparently DT has several riffs that they like, and reuse them,
whether intentionally or not. It's kinda hard to call it plagiarism, since
they're ripping themselves off, so i guess it's cool :)

Yes, when Derek plays his solo before James sings "Just close your eyes..." in JLMB just SOUNDS like what Kevin plays is LtL, only it's for three or four seconds -- and he plays it twice, methinks. It's hard to catch, 'cos he plays just a tiny part of it, but I think you're right.

Someone asked, "how do they play with all that shit on?" The same thing could be asked of Peter Gabriel in Genesis days, "how does he sing with all that shit on?" So I'm thinking, Gwar is the continuance of old Genesis. They're not some tribute band, but they're doing new stuff with the same philosophy of what's important--the costumes.

Genesis is considered one of the big progressive bands. So Gwar, a Genesis type band, must be prog too.

I noticed that the bassline during the verses of LITS sounded familiar. A couple days ago, I finally figured out that it sounded like Lie. This would make a pretty cool merger for the live set. I love the way they blend songs together, like ACOS:Inevitable Summer into Ytsejam (from the fix 96 shows). I'm not sure if Lie and LITS are in the same key though. Does anyone know if DT ever transposes their tunes, to blend with other tunes?

BTW, in the above paragraph, someone mentioned the SDV part in Voices. I don't think this is correct. The SDV part is in the Mirror, but I don't think it's in Voices. Correct me if I'm wrong.

If I remember correctly at the Providence "Fix" show , The Strand cut them off from playing their encore , Metropolis. I'm sure they'll be back around to play Prov. hopefully Boston, NY and other northeast shows. Maybe some Holiday shows. Later Rob

Date: Thu, 16 Oct 1997 23:40:55 +0100 (BST) From: George Tryfonas <gt4@ukc.ac.uk> To: ytsejam@ax.com Subject: Derek Sherinian and FII Message-ID: <Pine.SV4.3.95.971016231009.6389A-100000@merlin.ukc.ac.uk>

Just a small note about Derek's playing and the Falling Into Infinity album.

First things first: my fave DT album is Images and Words. I was always into songs involving lead synth (hence Pink Floyd, Yes, Emerson/Lake/Palmer were among my favorite rock bands) and I&W has LOTS of it -- think about songs like Metropolis, Under a Glass Moon, Learning to Live etc.

When Awake was released, there was an obvious change to DT's style. The guitar had taken over doing the solos for the most part, unlike I&W where there was a balance between the synth lead and the guitar lead. This is NOT to say that I did not enjoy Awake. On the contrary, I loved every bit of it. It's just that it's much different from I&W (not to mention WDADU, where the musical style was much more power metal like).

And then Kevin Moore left and Derek Sherinian joined in, when the band released "A Change of Seasons". The liner notes of the CD say that it was originally meant as a part of Metropolis, but I cannot see the relation between the two songs. They are COMPLETELY different in style -- at least when the ACoS CD was released, the band says that the song has been completely rewritten.

If I may say so, ACoS does not differ much from Awake in terms of keyboards. Mostly Derek was using strings (very effectively at that) at the back, with only two evident solos, in "The Inevitable Summer" and "The Darkest of Winters" instrumentals. The former song's solo was Deep Purple like while the latter one was more like Kevin would have played it. IMHO, though, Derek's synth lead there was not as "inventive" as Kevin's lead on Metropolis, for example. That is to say, not as inspired. I cannot express it better.

The FII album is completely different from anything DT have ever done as an album release (I haven't got any of their demos, so I wouldn't know about them). And that doesn't go just for the keyboards, but also for the rest of the instruments. As a matter of fact, the only songs that reminded me of the old Dream Theater were "Lines in the Sand" and "Trial of Tears". In no way am I saying that I don't like the album, it's just that I'm finding it hard to get used to it. If I were to hear WDADU, I&W, Awake and ACoS, I would immediately understand that they were DT albums. With FII I'm not so sure that this would happen so easily.

Concerning the keyboards of FII: I think that the jammers who are finding it hard to get used to the sound of FII, like me -- and from the recent postings I gather they are many -- should not crticize Derek and his playing for the change, as some of them have. One man alone cannot influence a whole band with his "innovative" ideas and change its style. The music for all the songs (as is stated in the liner notes) was written by Dream Theater collectively and NOT by Derek Sherinian alone.

The fact that DT have changed their style inbetween each and every one of their album releases comes to prove that those people are experimenting all the time. And that's really good for them.

Finally, I think that Derek is a really cool keyboard player. In time he will fit in with the band. FII is the first full length album he's done with the band, so for those who didn't like it: give him a second chance. He'll do better -- although he's doing really well already.

IMHO, I liked DT when Kevin was with the band more than I like them with Derek, but that does not go to say that I don't like them now. They always have and always will rock.
