Hey group! I went shopping yesterday. (vacations are GREAT!)
I went looking for the new Genesis. Couldn't find it. Something
about the holiday and UPS being suckwads... whatever.
I did buy Steve Hackett's Genesis Revisited. Thanks for the
suggestion, Syrinx. I bought The Tea Party: Transmission
as well. Cool music on that disc. Buy this disc NOW!
Anyhow, back to the original reason I'm writing. I went
looking for the new Genesis without luck. As I'm leaving the
store, I glance over to the letter "S" cd rack and what do I
see? SPOCK'S BEARD!!! Life it good! I bought the import
version of The Light. It has a 5th song. It is a sample portion
of another of their songs. I can't remember which one and the
disc is in the changer in the Neon. I also bought the Official
Bootleg. $13.99 for the bootleg and $19.99 for the import.
I am really starting to enjoy this vacation. Now I have some
more really great driving music, so my planned roadtrips
are going to be LOTSA fun. Till next time, G.

Hi, everyone! As the subject header says, it's not too late to get in on
the tape swap. The date that the participants will be notified of their
pairings will be September 23, since nothing special will be happening
that day. Except a mad dash to your favorite record/tape/CD store, of
    course :)

If you want to know more about the swap, follow the URL in my sig.

    Take care, everyone,

don't forget Alice Cooper's tour of "Welcome to My Nightmare" somewhere around `76 (if i'm not mistaken). a most awesome concert indeed. ;-) i first saw Kansas when they were touring on their "Song for America" album and it was mixed with their first album (i think... that was a looong time ago and i have fewer brain cells now ;-)

and for those of you that don't know what the "Trail of Tears" is about, check out http://tesuque.cs.sandia.gov/~bbooth/docs/cherokee/CherokeeTrailofTears.html

Well, one problem was, that Jeff was in NY, and the rest of the band was in northern CA, and they wanted to go a heavier route... I haven't heard the new singer yet, so we'll see.

The name Chaos Theory will probably be dropped too, since there are about a dozen bands vying for that name.

anyone who has the new genesis cd, i'd love to hear your remarks about it, please. are there any more resemblances to "test for echo" besides the album's title? who's got the drum seat on the album? is ray wilson (or is it ex-echolyn's ray weston?) really the next peter gabriel? is it good that phil's gone? please answer those questions, and we will love you.

on the subject of drummers and perfection, i've skimmed through some of the bits and pieces about porntoy's alleged drumming blunders. although i haven't really bothered to pay attention, this all reminds me about another drummer who i really like. if you want to hear "behind the beat" or "mistake-like" playing, will calhoun of living colour made this almost a trademark. this is elaborated more by his former guitar-mate, vernon reid in a magazine article i once read about it. he suggest a little lesson in which you play with a metronome, starting off hitting one note right on the beat (or click, if you like). keep doing it repeatedly, and eventually, just start slowing down or speeding up, so it seems as if you're fucking with the beat. fun stuff.

and my take on whether the porn-master is perfect as a drummer.....jeez, gimme a break. he could do 16th notes on the bass with one toe, and he still wouldn't be perfect. the "perfect" drummer is one who has the chops and tastefulness to play competently in ANY musical genre. mike, as great a PROGRESSIVE ROCK drummer as he is, doesn't fit this bill(if you disagree, try seeing him play elvin jones' licks or imagine him sitting in for p-funk). no one's perfect. there've been some people damn close to it, and this doesn't mean he SUCKS. but perfect? zzzzzzzzz

    Hey Folks -

Well, many thanks to a few kind souls out there in Ytse-Land who have helped me out finding the CaseLiner program to make some awesome tape cases! Now, I was wondering if there is a similar beast out there to make CD tray-cards? I have transferred a lot of those crappy digi-packs and cardboard sleeves to plastic CD cases, and I want something to put in the case for track listings and titles on the side... stuff like that. Something like CaseLiner for CD's would be perfect. Can anyone help me out? I'd appreciate any assistance...

Psychological Effects of Album Sleeve Design

    Hi all,

I read the post about how the album sleeve reflects the sound of the music. I agree. Actually, I would propose that we are psychologically influenced by the album sleeve--and as a result, we perceive the music differently. I know I do...DT's Awake certainly does sound like a darker album. Change of Seasons sounds "sky blue." The copy of When Dream and Day Unite that I own has a man apparently checking his armpit on the front cover. I hate that album for that reason.

My favorite album, (I'm sure to get feedback for this) Def Leppard's Hysteria, has a very complex mutlicolor design on the cover, and as a result, I perceive the music as being mutlicolored and complex (What I love about the record). One of the most disapointing albums I ever bought by a band that I like was Van Halen's For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge--It has a horrible maroon-colored sleeve, sort of like a monochrome snake skin with the VH logo in black. Horrible. As a result the album sounds maroon--thick undynamic bass--the low end sounds like molasses--I hated the sound of that album before I listened to it for the first time.

Does anyone else recognize (or suffer from) this effect? My best friend does. The self titled Metallica (Black) album sounds just like it looks, doesn't it? Doesn't Fate's Warning's APSOG sound just like it looks? I've actually taken the CD book out of some of my CDs and folded it so that a better panel faces out.

I think Van Halen gets the award for worst album covers. F.U.C.K. and Fair Warning are just miserable. The best album covers in my opinion? Def Leppard's Hysteria and King's X's Ear Candy. You can't help but think of that music as sounding as psycodelic as the cover looks.

Does anyone agree with *any* of this? (Or am I insane? I can't be insane--I'm a DT fan!)

Chris (of the band BRIDDITANTADE) RGZ321@aol.com

the singer's ray wilson, not ray weston. =)

the drums are done by a guy named Nir Z (with Nick from Spock's Beard doing 3 1/2 songs).

No, Ray's not the next Peter Gabriel, although you can hear traces of both Phil and Peter in it. Yes, the album's good. It's amazing. It's not "We Can't Dance" and is isn't "Foxtrot" but it's a healthy balance between. It's one of those albums that you can't stop listening to...and say "how'd they do that?" every time Tony does one of those rad signature changes.

This post has been shortened for your satisfaction.. =)

[ The gist of the message below ----- Seven Wonders is open for orders! All seven of Mike Bahr's past Dream Theater boots (plus bonus Mind Control) all on one disc digitally replicated in full-CD quality on *one* CD in MP3 format for $22.

[ The CDs ----- Subconscious, Acoustic Dreams, When Dream and Today Unite, Antiquities, Scenes from a Memory, Precious Things, The Darkest of Winters, and, as a bonus, the 2-CD boot, Mind Control.

[ The technical details ----- All tracks were digitally ripped into .wav format. Then they were converted to .mp3 format using a 128000 bitrate (CD-quality). The result? Songs that sound EXACTLY the same as the originals, and a CD that would take you half a day to listen to in its entirety. To listen to it in full CD quality, you'll need a Pentium (or similar moderately-powered computer if you're using something other than an x86 processor).

[ The ordering info ----- Forgive me if I revert to some of Mike Bahr's shipping options. Shipping is free in the Continental USA and Canada. Shipping to Mexico, South America, and the two dangling states is $2.00 for up to 5 discs, $5.00 for more than five. Everywhere else, $5.00 for one or two discs, $8.00 for more than two.

Send me e-mail at David-Whitaker@worldnet.att.net to reserve your order (and so I can begin production on your disc). Then send me snail mail with your name, address, e-mail address, and check or money order ($22 times number of discs) to: Ryan Whitaker - Seven Wonders 2001 S. 9th St. Waco, TX 76706

Seeing as I don't have a website (which will change soon) and I'm dealing on a smaller scale, PLEASE e-mail me if you want an update on your order. The discs will be shipped out the very next day after I get your payment. An e-mail will be sent to you the day it ships to notify you to be expecting it soon. (Note: The printer tells me the liners will be ready at the latest September 10th, so figure that into the estimate)

[ Fine print ----- All sales are final. If your disc is messed up, send it back within a week of receipt and I will ship you a new one along with, at my expense, payment for the stamps you used to ship it to me. If your computer is too slow, etc. then just get a new computer. =)

[ Final comments regarding project independence ----- This project is in NO way being worked in conjunction with Mike Bahr. He HAS given me his blessing for the project (which is *extremely* cool of him, and I would have not gone into production if he was the slightest bit dissatisfied with the project), but that's where it ends. Please don't e-mail him with questions or reservation requests (for this CD)! I don't want to interfere with his business. I will not be re-releasing this MP3 compilation album with the Mosaic album (Mike's current project) included, although there is still plenty of room left for it. That would be plain retarded. I decided to do this with his past 7 boots because they have had time to "settle", whereas Mosaic is just about to be released. Plus I'd have to change the title to "Eight Wonders" and that doesn't jive with the whole Seven Wonders of the World concept. =)

Also, if any of you have a trade in mind for this, please e-mail me and I'll see if I want what you have. For instance, Marcel Berkhout is just now re-releasing his Carpe Diem disc, and he arranged a one-to-one trade for my CD. Works for me. =)

Thank you, D. Ryan Whitaker David-Whitaker@worldnet.att.net (note the hyphen!)
