Well, The Flower kings is from Sweden, led by Roine Stolt, the guitar
player, who was in "Samla Mammas Manna" and "Kaipa" before. The Flower
Kings music is meodic prog like a combination of Marillion, Kansas, Jethro
Tull and King Crimson with the unique singing style of Roine Stolt. You
will like them.
These are albums of The Flower Kings that I have.
1). The Flower King / Roine Stolt (this one is a good album to start with,
and this album has no "s") It has a 20.55 minute song called "Humanizzimo",
very good.
2). Back In the World Of Adventures
3). Retropolis (good)
4). Stardust We Are (2 cds of Brand New Studio Recordings)
The problem is all cds are import. They are hard to find in the U.S. but
not in Europe.
I saw their show at Progfest'97 in LA. They were an excellent live band.
Hope this helps,
AE

Hi...
Well, here's my share of the "Music industry, popular music, and all
of this shit" discussion....
Generally, from what I know, people will listen to anyhting that is
popular among their society. No matter if it's rap, dance, hip-hop,
death metal, black metal or prog rock. I've started listening to DT
because a couple of my friends listened to them. Then, eventually,
the whole group of people I hang with started listening to DT.
So, if the press would review DT and define them as "cool music" or
"good music", people will eventually start listening to DT. Now, here's
where the record label comes into the picture. If they'll promote DT
like Spice Girls get promoted, DT will be a huge hit. It's as simple as
that.
A good example of that is as followed:
Some fucker around here realised that boy bands make good money. So, he
HIRED some good-looking fellows and started promoting them. They're now
a huge success in israel. And all they do is dance on the stage and
throwing words in the air, and pretend like they're playing.
This was 60 seconds about the press and popular music

Subject: Kurt Cobain and MTV in a DT song
Message-ID: <01INBL7BRSTE96W1HC@alma.edu>

>mentions Kurt Cobain and MTV in one of their new songs
Does this bother anyone else? Ok, I haven't heard any of the new stuff
yet, and I'm not going to make a big deal out of this until I have, since for
all I know this quote could be dead wrong anyway. But to me, this is just a
subtle indication that the band may be headed in a direction that I don't like.
It reminds me of something I read here a year or so ago where someone said that
alot of fans don't like the line in Learning to Live that goes "The nineties
bring new questions..." because they consider IaW to be something of a timeless
work, and that one line dates the whole thing. I agree. I've always thought of
these guys (DT) as being kind of visionaries (go ahead and laugh, I'm serious)
whose music stood on its own as great art, regardless of when it was written.
I've never understood how anyone can dismiss music as sounding "too eighties"
or whatever. How is it that it sounded good then, but bad now just because it's
"out of date"? No other so-called art form besides pop music goes out of date,
and it's a pretty good indication of what people will think of most of this
music in a hundred years.
But I'm getting way off topic here. My point is this. Social commentary
is fine, and I don't mind vague references or hints of it in my music. Alot
of Metallica's old stuff was semi-political, and that was cool, because it
always had kind of a vague, semi-poetic ring to it. But when the lyrics to
music start including direct references to current pop culture, it loses any
sense of timelessness, and as a result, any possibility of being "pure art" to
me. "Pure art", I suppose, would be music written purely for the sake of the
music. Maybe this is why I generally gravitate towards instrumental music,
because lyrics always seem to me to ruin any timeless quality the music may
have. But this is one thing I've always really liked about DT, is that the
lyrics were art, too, as timeless as the music.
Ok, hopefully someone will know what I'm talking about here. Here's my
two cents on one other semi-related topic: I personally don't give a flying
woopty-doo if DT has ANY commercial success with this album or not, and in
fact, I hope they don't. It would be nice if the world would recognize their
music for its greatness on their own, and appreciate all the depth and
complexity it has to offer. But this will never happen. As someone else said
recently, any band can be popular if they're marketed correctly, and this
probably includes DT. But this very fact just goes to show that even if they
do become popular, it will be for the wrong reasons. Now, if I run into a DT
fan, as rare as this is, at least I know we have at least one very real thing
in common. But even though we all would like to see the boys have more success
and get more recognition, I don't think those are the types of fans we want on
this list, and I don't think we want them at the cost of the band's integrity.
But perhaps I shouldn't be telling all of you what you want. I'll leave that
up to the music industry.

Since there have been alot of questions about this, I will

My Soul" and will be released to US Rock Radio ONLY. It will NOT be
released as a commercial single. There will be a commercially
released single later in the year (probably in Europe as in the past),
with bonus tracks, but they are not 100% sure of what the single will
be yet.

Heheh. I just renewed some semblance of hope for MTV. While watching
Beavis & Butthead last night one of the commercials (which always seem to
be sex-related and last forever) was a promotion for Genesis' new album!
Not that I'm a big Genesis fan, but I think I'll go buy that album. It
sounded pretty good. (What I heard of it). Anywho, I about jumped out of
my chair when I saw that. Everyone send Meat Kadu's to MTV for their
valiant efforts. Praise them and praise prog and it'll make a better
impact than sending death threats. :) Then request a Beck video. :)
I'm still in shock.

Oh yeah! I saw a Virgil Donati workshop soma days ago. He really kicks ass
on the bass drum, he is really fast. But I didn't like his drumming very
much. He doesn't got much creativity, so, MP can be a little slower than
him in double bass, but he is still a better, much better, drummer than
Donati. Virgil is too much worried about throwing the sticks up... :) (If

Can anyone help me with this:
In all music theory books I've seen (in the 'meters' section),
the 'speed' of the examples is set in 'beats per minute':
bmp=100
However, in common guitar transcription books (Awake booklet, etc),
the authors prefer to use 'number of quarter notes per minute':
[quarter note]=100
What is the correct way to set the 'speed' of a song? For those
who have/had music lessons: how are students usually taught?
Thanks

Check out Rudess and Morgenstein if you want interesting prog. It does
not have much balls and chunk. It's only keys and drums, but the sound is
not thin. They got their start at a Dixie Dregs gig where the power went
out and all that stayed on was the keys and drums. I picked up their CD
for $6 at a used store yesterday. :) I hope no Boston Jammer sold that
fine CD for a few bucks. :)

Ok, so I watched some of Princess Di's funeral, and was struck
by the hymn that was played/sung as they carried the casket out
of Westminster Abbey after the ceremony. Does anybody know what
this was/who wrote it/if there are any recordings of it? I think
Mr. Brokaw mentioned the name afterwards, but I didn't catch it.
Very haunting throughout, with a final triumphant major chord
progression at the end; simply beautiful. Can anyone help?

I, too, had a cool DT experience in class recently. My vocal teacher
(voice class, not a lesson) started talking about different rock groups
and their singers. She mentioned that her son had recently gone to a
Marillion show and started talking about their singer. I was the only one
who had even heard of them (I am in classical country here). Then I
mentioned DT and SHE started talking about level of musicianship and
education. And then onto actually applying what musicians learn to their
work and so on. Anyway, she must have talked for ten minutes about DT and
Marillion. Everyone thought I was nuts and I thought it was cool!
