I'm not sure if much of this was done, but during the "chromatic maelstrom"
in CiaW I know that whole thing was played numerous times, once normal,
once with the bass up and the treble down, once with the treble up and bass
down, etc... If you listen you can clearly hear all the different parts.

    Hey there jammanoids!

I went downtown today with the idea of meeting the guys and gettind my
CD booklets signed by them, but...
Hell!!! I never saw that many people in the same place!!! It was
crowded like never before (I go there pretty often to buy CD's)... And
the guys did not stay much time (about an hour), and the police's
attempts to "organize" everything just screwed it all up.

Well, I can't say it was all a worthless evening... =) I could at least
see them (John Petrucci, apparently, did not show up... and yes, Mike
Portnoy has cut his hair up to his shoulders, and has some blonde
"stripes" on it... =) ), and, in the meantime, bought Time Machine's
"Project: Time Scanning" (that I'm listening to know... a cool album,
some nice riffs, but the vocals aren't nearly as good as in their second
album "Act II: Galileo". If you like the band, and don't own this album,
it's worth a try... the songs are a bit heavier than in the other two
albuns, but there's still a hard prog influence).

Now for the shows tomorrow and Friday! Wait for the tons of reviews
    we'll be providing you. =)
Hope I can still get tickets for Portnoy's workshop on Saturday...

jammers, I'm a HUGE savatage fan, but I'm kind of feeling ill in my stomach after hearing two bad reviews of the new savatage, and this is by "savatage fans". They say that it starts off promising then just falls flat, and that "Dead Winter Dead" was much better. They say that Zach does too much shouting as opposed to singing. Oh well, I will buy it anyway and judge myself, but I hate getting down by bad reviews.........Take Care.............Dusty

    Hey!

GREAT news... as some of you may already know from www.savatage.com, the mighty 'Tage is playing 3 warm-up gigs on the east coast before heading across the ocean to Europe for their "Wake Of Magellan" tour. Opening night is a mere 2.5 hours from my apartment in Danbury, CT at the Tuxedo Junction on October 16! I am stoked... they are number 1 currently on my list of bands that I haven't seen live yet and desperately want to! :-) Apparently, this is a great club for live music (something like 950 capacity). I miraculously have found the web page for the club featuring upcoming gigs and directions to the place. In case anyone is interested:

    http://www.moonsite.com/tuxedo/

I also checked out TicketBastard today, and the concert is in the system. $10 per ticket (plus the arm and a leg surcharge). I picked up 2 for me and my old man. (Can U believe it? :-D) Anywayz, just wanted to let you all know about the gig! :-)

Oh yeah... as someone mentioned recently, Metal Edge has a big 5-page feature with Dream Theater this month. Cool photos too!

    That's all 4 now... Laterz! Matt T.

Anybody heard of a band called Kaz? or Kas, don't know the spelling. Supposedly they're gonna play in Panama next month, and it's being advertised as 'the first international progressive rock concert in Panama'. Just wondering because I've never heard of them. Since they're playing here, I'm guessing they're from South or Central America.

And opening is a national band called Equinox...never heard of them..hope they're good:)

And about Awake and Keyboards...boy you ppl seem to be phsycic, knowing how KevMo felt and all. They way I see it, the reason Awake sounds so guitar heavy is because of the mixing. The keyboards are mixed very low. When i think of Awake, '7-string guitar' comes to mind, but when I hear it, i realize there's a lot of cool keyboard playing. Heck, the FIRST and LAST songs are packed. What made me realize this was listening to the TLF studio version. The solo at the beginning is mixed so low...you can still hear it, but it's too low for a solo.

And remember that we don't know exactly when this material was written. Remember the intro to 'The Mirror' was already being played on the I&W tour. I also have a boot with them jamming on the 6:00 riff also on that tour (maybe the jam that spawned 6:00?). I think Kevin's decision came towards the end of the recording, but i wouldn't know.

The point is that is that there *is* a lot of keyboards there, just not prominently mixed. So don't blame kevin, don't blame John...blame the producer (as usual):)

ok, i guess it's subjective, but i hate hi-tech glossy productions. I like hearing the snare sound like a snare...not like a shotgun. And the recording should sound more or less how the band sounds live..not adding to it and maiking it sound puffy. Why? Well first time i heard PMU off of LATM (on the radio) my first reaction was that they sucked live. But it was just that it sounded so 'raw' in comparison to I&W, that i thought the performance was bad. Boy was I wrong:)

    >Dream Theater's remarkable musician/craftmanship. I disagree that DT got more > experimental in the studio with Awake. >Awake is a great sounding album, but it seems that it was approached with more >of a documentative production style - capturing the band live. I really see no >evidence of any kind of experimentation in the studio for Awake. Think

Well, I was referring to FII. Both Awake and I&W sound pretty standard through-out..since they did the 'each-instruments-lays-down-all-the-tracks-one-at-a-time' method. But JP did do a lot of experimineting w/ sounds on Awake (he said it in an interview ). But it's like they had their 'formulas' for parts. Like " ok hear's a clean part, let's averdub an acoustic", etc...

    >< The style of the keyboards has also changed brutally, drastically (just compare the piano style of the Images and Words songs and the style of keyboards on Awake and you'll also see I what I mean). ><

It's still there...maybe not as much as I&W, but very noticeable on songs like Space-Dye Vest and some parts of Voices.

    >< You can notice that as the time passed Dream Theater became more and more guitar oriented (*maybe* with a "domination" -- I don't know if this is the correct word here -- of John Petrucci over the band member). ><

I wouldn't go that far...just look at, again, Space-Dye Vest as well as Lifting Shadows, The Mirror, and 6:00, among others, which have equal part keyboard. However, for argument's sake, John Petrucci is, arguably (I think...), the best musician in Dream Theater. He's their "crown jewel" (not to take away from the others), so why not show it off?

    >< You know, I hear Dream Theater because I want to hear what each member is contributing to the song. This *doesn't* mean that I like each artist separately from the others, not as a band. This *does* mean that I appreciate what each member contributes to the whole song and what the song sounds like as a composition of many parts working together. ><

Then it would make more sense for you to not like I&W for this reason. After all, you've got songs like Wait For Sleep and the beginning and endings of Surrounded in which all you hear is keyboards and vocals. Awake may be more guitar-oriented, and only for a few songs, but at least it doesn't forget the other instruments, and I think they all stand out ('cept bass, which never does).
