Out of curiosity, how many others here were actually on the 'jam when
I originally posted that interview?! That was one if the first true
"interactions" between the band and the 'jam... I gathered a bunch of

Ernesto Schnack and I are gathering people to help out DT with the
promotion side of FII. This might even turn into something bigger than
that, but for right now it's going to be just about FII. If you're
interested email me, or Ernesto. We'll be "gathering" people until about
the beginning of November(then we'll start to do our thing). Also, if
you're willing to help send a message to mailing lists and newsgroups
that you're /already a member of/. I can't stress that enough! This is

Hi everyone,
I've heard a review for almost every Magna Carta band on this list. But,
I've never seen one for World Trade. I heard one of their songs. Very
interesting.
Quick question:Am I the only person, who hasn't heard any of the new
songs, and hasn't seen the covRE? :)
The production on all of DT's album is great, IMLTLO(in my larger than
life opinion ;). I&W has a bright feeling to it. Which goes along to
most of the songs. TTT is a good example of having a positive outlook.
While Awake has a heavy feeling, it fits most of the songs, too. Lie &
Mirror are really good examples of this.

I did not get Internet access until 1995. I rarely listen to
the radio at all since about mid-1994. Anyway, in August or
September of 1994 I heard the end of a new song on the radio
that did not totally suck. I waited for the DJ to announce
who and what the song was. He said it was Lie from the
new Dream Theater CD, Awake.
I was in shock. I bought and loved Images and Words. I listened
to it non-stop for about a month when it was released to the
exclusion of all else. I&W to me was the greatest CD I had
ever heard in my life from the first listen. With no resources
other than my patience for poor record store selection, I had
also found When Dream and Day Unite, Live at the Marquee, and
the Live in Tokyo video.
Dream Theater quickly became my favorite band...
Until Awake.
I didn't like it. On first listen, the only two songs that
I liked at all were Scarred and Lifting Shadows off a Dream.
I actually skipped Space Dye Vest whenever I listened to
the CD, which really wasn't that often...
Until February of 1995 when I discovered the World Wide Web.
I spent about a month looking at all the music information on
the web especially the Michael Burstin DT site, which was the
best at the time. It mentioned the YTSEJAM mailing list and
how to subscribe.
I said what the heck and joined. One of the first topics
posted during my long, initial period of lurking was a
comparison of the two albums. I downloaded all the old
YTSEJAMS to read the Awake discussion prior to and during
the release. (Amazing how history repeats itself). I could
not believe what I read; most people preferred Awake by
a large margin. Fearing the flames of dissension, I kept
my opinions to myself and began gathering the really
obscure DT stuff: singles, bootlegs, and t-shirts.
I decided I needed to be more open-minded about Awake and
sought out the things that people liked about the CD. After
repeated listens, I slowly gained an acceptance, then, finally
a liking for the CD. It was not the masterpiece that I&W was
but I could accept the changes. It was much better than
all the other crap on radio and MTV.
I had not yet opened my mind to the possibility that the many
obscure (at the time) bands could be as good. I bought some
CDs recommended by Ytsejammers on the list (Echolyn, Kings X,
Magellan, Cairo) waiting for the release of ACOS. I really didn't
think any of these compared well to DT, even Awake.
Finally in September of 1995, I went on release day to buy
ACOS. While I was in the store, I decided to look for the
new Saigon Kick CD. Flipping through the "S" section, I stumbled
across a CD that had been mentioned on the jam numerous times.
It was Shadow Gallery's Carved in Stone. Despite not being
too impressed with the other recommendations from jammers,
I bought it.
I was astounded. It was fantastic. Even better than ACOS. I did
like ACOS quite a bit, but Shadow Gallery had as big an impact
on me as I&W.
I finally realized that DT was not the end-all, be-all band.
There were other great bands out there.
I found several progressive metal sites on the Web and started
buying some of their recommended CDs:

The experience has gone well. Over the last couple of
months, I have discovered a new area for discussion of
progressive metal that is everything that I was hoping
for from Chris Ptacek's short-lived progressive mailing
list. It is a WWWBOARD based discussion area with links

I have found myself actually reading, instead of skimming,
the stuff posted there.
I will buy FII on 9/23. I will probably like it. I will
go see DT when they come to my town. I will support them
by buying their merchandise. I do so like them Sam-I-am :)
I wish the band the greatest success and hope that they
continue to do what they wish to do.
I'm really not interested in the flames and the "fan"
mentality that I see on here anymore. All in all, its been
a pretty good 2 and 1/2 years for me, so I won't go
out flaming.
Many thanks to Skadz for this list. His administration
of the list is perfect IMO. He believes in the necessary
balance of freedom and restraint. I commend his efforts
and seeminly limitless tolerance.
Kudos are also in order for the many people who have
made this list a great place to be.

Just wanted to clarify something about checking this transcription. I mentioned that I thought this transcription was pretty much correct and didn't really encourage anyone to seriously submit alternate fingerings. But I do want alternate fingerings if:
1) You think it is wrong (particularly the notes).
2) You saw Petrucci play this live or on video and distinctly remember where he played it.
I had someone email me remembering where Petrucci played a particular passage. Please send that stuff in!! I just didn't want 30-40 messages saying "I don't like your fingerings; it is much easier for me to play it this way." To me the current fingerings sound and feel right, but if there are substantial reasons (like Petrucci played it this way!) to seriously look at the fingerings, then _please_ let me know. I want the most accurate transcription of this song, and as close to the actual fingerings as Petrucci played it.
Actually, it is not like I'm going to jump your case even if you send me your personal fingerings. I'd be interested in them. I just don't want anyone to get upset if I don't change the fingerings. But I'm not locked onto these fingerings if there is a _good_ enough reason.

Well, I know I've mentioned 'em twice before. Here's 3. Keep in mind, I only own the album "Euphoria". AFAIK, that's all they have.
World Trade is not, in my estimation, a progressive band. They're a ressurection of good 80's style pop, with some proggish leanings. The closest thing to their sound is Duran Duran's self-titled album... the one with Too Much Information and Ordinary World on it. They sound like The Fixx in places, too.
They are slightly progressive. They are not metal. But I like 'em anyway. The world needs some more _good_ pop bands.

Anyway, got some new albums this week. For the nitty gritty:
FW-APSoG-I'm reiterating here. If you don't have this album and you like DT, what are you waiting for? FNM-Album of the Year-Better than King For a Day IMHO. The guitar riff at the beginning of track 4 is especially cool. I think the song is called "Naked at my Computer". The album has an odd yet like-able mixture of styles/vocals. FNM fans this is recommended! This album also marks the 2 album limit for keeping the same members in the band (I think). Who they gonna replace this time? FNM-Live at Brixton Academy-I've never seen these guys live, but now I REALLY REALLY want to! These guys are so cool live! Mr. Patton is an _amazingly_ talented vocalist! He shows it off on this one. Mr. Martin shreds up some impromptu guitar riffs that sound impressive. It's too bad he left the band-he added a lot to their sound. Anybody know what he's doing? Anyway, FNM fans this is a must! Plus it's got two bonus tracks (The Grade and Cowboy Song). How can you go wrong? Savatage-Edge of Thorns-My first listen to Savatage after hearing all the good things on this list, and it was $10, so I figured what the hey? I've only played it 3 or 4 times, but I'm starting to really like it. If you don't know Savatage, I'm thinking there are better albums to start with. Savatage fans-what's the word? QR-Rage for Order-All I had was Mindcrime and newer. So I tried this out. If you like QR at all you have to have this album too! I noticed in the album credits they mention thanks for the album concept. Either I'm missing it (entirely possible) or the concept isn't quite as obvious on mindcrime. Anybody help me out with this one? And yes, I'm behind because I should have had this album 12 years ago when it came out. I would have liked this when I was 9 I'm sure! Crimson Tide Soundtrack-WOW!!! If you've heard some inspiring french horn phrases from recent movie soundtracks, chances are they borrowed the notes from this soundtrack. I think the new movie about gangsters with Lawrence Fishburne (dunno the name) uses the music in the reviews and probably in the movie too (haven't seen it). This makes Ride of the Valkyries seem like a lullaby. I played F Horn for 5 years, so I may like it more than most. Horn is probably one of the most powerful instruments in an orchestra - the composer uses that to its full advantage on this. And the whole thing is dark and ominous, which I like too. If you dig instrumental music and french horns, this CD belongs in your collection.
I also got Marillion's Made Again but haven't opened it yet because I've still got the live FNM on repeat. I'll get to it at work tomorrow probably as I sit at my computer and trace pipes on P&IDs (for you engineers). Booooorrring. I'm just glad to fill some holes that were in my CD collection. The good thing about the jam is it's not ALL about DT. I wouldn't have picked up Marillion or APSoG or the new FNM because I either wouldn't have heard of them or known what the content was. Went to Best Buy in Beaumont - on our scale they got 2 lousy points! They had NO DT! Not even a placard with Dream Theater on it. They would have spelled it Theatre anyway. They had ONE FW title - APSoG, but only one copy. I know where I WON'T get FII. This place sucks for music. There isn't even a used CD store in town! There's 100,000 people here too - go figure. Must be a Texas thing.

Hey guys,
Before the jam really takes off in volume when the new album is released, I thought I'd get a quick question in. I want to know if there's ANY retail outlet, mail order service or even record shows where people have seen the Lie single recently. I'm afraid that if I can't find it soon I never will, if it's not too late already. I think the only alleged sightings of it in the last year or two have been at Best Buy. Unfortunately, they don't special order CDs for you, so what you see at a given store is what you get. Anyway, if anyone can point me (and others) toward a place that sells this, I'm sure a lot of people would be interested. I know I'd personally pay through the nose for it (thus my mention of record shows).
I heard an interesting song today on my local college radio station (gotta listen for new DT, and this station is a pretty good mix of classic, AOR and new rock). The DJ said it was a new song by Power Station, and I thought, hmm, some new group must be oblivious to the name being used by the mid-80s semi-supergroup featuring Robert Palmer and some Duran Duran members. The song started, and it was fairly heavy rock, with a little alternasound. Then the vocals started.. and I think it was Palmer! Even the drums had some of those offbeat open hi-hat patterns prevalent in that S/T album from the 80s. Ok, so I'm a drummer, and I look for those things. :) But anyway, I got to thinking, I seem to recall that Palmer had most recently done some adult contemporary type albums, and if this is him, he's returned to hard rock. Could this be a trend? Could DT become a part of it? It certainly is a promising sign.
