Yeah, the guys in DT certainly must've felt like the Beatles...
Imagine HUNDREDS of people in front of one single record store, all pushing
each other and taking photos of every long hair dude with sunglasses... :)
    Get the picture?

Well, with God's luck, I finally got to meet the guys inside... They seemed
really cool people, and I got my I&W signed. Woo-hoo!! Oh, and Mike said
hello to you people in the 'Jam. :)

Hey! Anyone going to the shows for tomorrow (Friday) just e-mail me! I will
be there, probably along with Rogerio and Alexandre. It would be great to
    meet other brazilian jammers.

Damn! I just came back from the store, and it's sold out! Well, I guess
it's the price for me to be such a slacker... :(

P.S.: Wow!!!!!! I just d-loaded Hell's Kitchen and it gives me the chills!
Lots and lots of emotions on it. Guess it's one of my favorite DT
instrumentals ever. Too bad it's sooo short. Hope they'll play it tonight.

    Hello,

In the short time that I've known of the 'Jam, I think that I've gotten
a lot out of discussions of bands other than DT. With that in mind...
King Crimson was mentioned a few days ago, I think, and to add my 2
cents, every prog fan should have a copy of Discipline. But I
    digress...
Tool. There, I said it. AEnima by Tool surprised the hell out of me.
Not for its instrumental virtuosity or anything, mind you. There's
essentially nine songs on the thing (accompanied by 6 other snippet type
"songs"), and I have found that, structurally, the music is incredible.
For songs that regularly reach 7-8 minutes in length, I was astounded by
how well they moved, for the character and organization in each song.
It's something I never though I'd get into, but I can't stop listening
to the damn thing. Any thoughts?
Another album that struck me is Mistaken Identity by Vernon Reid
(ex-Living Colour guitarist). The album incorporates sampling and even
rapping on a few songs, two things that I never thought I could stomach,
but again, the album really is an incredible listening experience.
Vernon Reid is a musical visionary, and while this album takes an open
mind to appreciate, the music truly paints a picture. High
recommendations--provided you want to get a little bit outside of prog.
Just some thoughts to tide everyone over until the 23rd... and hey, if
hear these albums and truly hate them, it'll just make you appreciate
    FII all the more. =)

Hi, All. Just one update on the begining of the new tour. :-)

Well, today, as previously planned, I went to "Galeria do Rock",
where the members of Dream Theater went and I must say that it would be
much nicer if the event were more organized by the people bringing Dream
Theater here to Brazil (well, I got really impressed by the *number* of
Dream Theater fans here... I thought that *only* *I* were a fan in a
radius of 10 or 20 miles :-) ). Maybe they were impressed too. :-)

Unfortunately, I had some problems with the security members here
(you know, they treat you like if you were a guilty of every problem of
the world -- what can you expect from military people -- "Military
intelligence, two words combined that can't make sense").

I almost had my left arm broken and my back is really hurting. :-(
The interesting thing are that Cassiano brought me a tape with some of the
    new songs. :-)

One more thing: being a member of the Ytsejam International
Mailing list, I thought that could have an interview with the band members
that I'd send to the list and also put on my homepage, but it was not
possible. I really wished that I could talk with them, but there was far
too many people there screaming to see them and I could not even get
close, let alone get my things signed. :-(

Well, it was interesting to see Portnoy's hair, tough. :-)

I don't know if Aramacan's policy allows taping, but I'll try to
    bootleg the event. :-)

            See you later, Roger...

Hi, I've just been told by a chap at HMV (I've been hassling him for weeks so - I believe this to be true) that FII will be released in the UK on the 20th October through Warner. Apparently HMV have only just found out - there wasn't going to be a release but Warner have had so many enquiries that they've decided it would be worth their while after all (how considerate). This is great news except that us UK jammers will be a month behind the rest of the world (unless we import) - but I don't mind the wait. Dave (a happier UK Jammer).

Yup, Fish will be on IRC for a chat session, only one day after the Marillion chat, on chat.talkcity.com ! Everyone will be able to ask him a question... The *cool* thing is, you get to ask your question yourself. But please use some common sense, and do not ask anything stupid :-) (no requesting Grendel either). Just before the chat session, Kimari Sabaj will ask you to give her your nickname. She will then make a list of those nicks (duplicates will be removed) and give everyone a chance to ask Fish a question.

Over to Kimari for some details : _____

Fish IRC Chat, Monday September 14th 18:00 (Central European Time) / 2pm (Eastern Daylight Time-US)

server: irc.dreamt.org port: 2112 alt. server: irc-2.dreamt.org port: 2112 channel: TBA on #Freaks just before

We're expecting quite a few people to show up so we have to implement a chat protocol.

We will set up a queue of people's nicks to ask questions, one at a time and allow Fish to answer before we get another.

Since Fish only has an hour with us, join #Freaks a half hour before the time of the chat (17:30 CET/1:30 pm EDT) so we can set up the question queue and announce the REAL channel from there.

The channel will be moderated (only those with "voice" or "ops" can speak) to avoid distracting cross-chatter, if you want to talk amongst yourselves you can be on two channels at once or use private msgs.

On #Freaks we will ask ppl to msg the "AskMe" bot with a short msg (ie your name). As the nicknames come in they will be put into a queue to ask questions. DO NOT flood the bot with repeated msgs because we will go through all the names recieved once before anyone gets a second chance, those who flood with many msgs will not be put into the queue. Also do not change your nickname after you sign up in the queue because we will not be able to keep track and you will miss your turn. After a set amount of time the queue will be closed and we will announce the channel where the actual chat will take place.

Once in the new channel the Q&A will start. Here's how it will work. Once Fish arrives the first person in the queue will be given "voice" to ask their question. You will have a maxium of two "lines" (lines after a return containing your nick not lines of text) ie..

    <Kimari> line 1 <Kimari> line 2

(each of these "lines" may be more than one actual line of text but most irc clients seem to have a limit of about 3 lines before you MUST hit a return) Please indicate the end of your question with "<eoq>" or "<end>". "Voice" will then be removed and Fish will answer the question.

When Fish is finished, voice will be given to the next person in the queue and so on...

IMPORTANT: Anyone who attempts to flood the channel with text when they are given voice will immediately be kicked off the channel and not allowed back in.

Please DO NOT send private msgs to Fish, he will not see them and a flood of them can boot him off.

If we have time after completing the queue we will either open the queue again or unmoderate the channel for a bit of a free-for-all depending on how much time is left.

The channel ops will be Itch and Kimari, Itch will be the one to direct questions to as Kimari will be running multiple windows and will go postal if she gets lots of msgs *grin*

We will also keep a log of the chat and post it afterward. _____

The chat will take place from Holland (just before a concert) and will be at 6 pm central European time.

Also, in case you're interested... Marillion will do a chat session this Sunday, on another server. You can read *all* about it, at the following URL : http://www.artist-shop.com/irc

    About the Fish Chat :

Like Kimari said, Fish will only be there for about an hour. The chat will actually take place just before a gig here in Holland. Make sure you get on #Freaks about half an hour before the chat session, so you can enter your nickname in Kim's queue. Do NOT for ANY reason change your nickname. Not only will it be annoying, you might also miss your chance to ask a question... Do NOT bug Kimari OR Fish by sending them private messages. Kimari will be too busy for that and Fish might get flooded off the server ! Kimari and I will be taking care of hecklers Fish-style, so don't piss us off ;-)

The actual chat will not take place on #Freaks. It will be on another channel. We'll announce the actual channel name right before the chat session begins. Just think of #Freaks as the waiting room. :-)

Make sure you can get there :

I'd suggest you try to get on #Freaks BEFORE Monday. That way you can ask me for help, if you are having problems getting there... Check my homepage for instructions on how to get on #Freaks (PC users *only*). Please make sure you followed the instructions to the *letter* before you ask me for help. If you're not sure of what time the chat will be for *you*, just get on #Freaks and synchronize your watch with one of the Dutchies :-) Better safe than sorry...

Mac users can get an IRC client at http://www.xs4all.nl/~ircle/ but I won't be able to help with any problems (sorry!)... Maybe someone can volunteer for that job :-)

To get a chance to ask Fish your question, you'll have to give Kimari your nickname before the chat starts. This is how you do it :

    /msg AskMe your-nick

When the channel name for the Fish chat is announced you will be able to get there with :

    /join #channelname

(you can leave #Freaks with /part #Freaks or just close the window !)

If you have any problems during the chat on Monday, send me a private message and I will try to help you ! Please, *only* message me if you really really have to... Too many private messages could flood me off the server. You can message me with :

    /msg Itch your-question

Again, please do NOT bug Kimari OR Fish with private messages. You'll probably get kicked off the channel for that.

    Transcript :

Kimari and I will be keeping a log of the entire chat, and post it on our sites afterwards. To make the transcript a bit nicer, I will need everyone who asked a question to give me his/her real name. You'll be able to do so on my homepage when the chat is over. Your nick will be replaced by your real name.

    Suggestion :

*During* the chat, people will probably be coming, going and dropping off the server... That will result in annoying stuff like :

    Itch [~bredius@143.178.243.9] has joined #channelname

Most IRC programs can hide those messages from you. Make sure you set your program to do so, otherwise your might not be able to follow the chat session too well.

    Pirch :

    1. Press the [Prefs] button 2. Select the [Misc] tab 3. [x] Hide Joins/Parts/Quits

    mIRC :

    1. Option 2. IRC Switches 3. Unselect Joins/Parts in Channel (in the 'Show' menu)

In Ircle, you can find this option under Preferences/Text.

I think that's about it for now. If you have any questions about this at all, mail me at bredius@globalxs.nl or better yet, meet me on IRC. If you've never been on IRC, definately try to get there *before* the day of the Fish chat (like, Sunday for the Marillion chat session !).

Oh yeah, if you like IRC and decide to get on #Freaks regularly, take a look at the "Talk Without Talking" section on my homepage. There is a page with over 40 pictures of frequent visitors, and *another* page with descriptions of over 60 Freaky visitors. :-) Lemme know if you wanna be on those pages too (End of obligatory plug).

    Enjoy,

Hey all! Damn, I hate it when school starts. I hate it worse when I miss 3 days of jams and have to spend all of my afternoon off wading thru them. But I LOVE posting my useless comments about schtuff other ppl wrote. :)

I was gonna make a comment about KAI's spelling of Phyrigian, but that's already been covered. Btw, I too laughed my ass off when I read it. Kinda embarassing when you're working in the University's writing center and supposed to be tutoring students, not reading e-mail.

Paul Humm wrote (regarding KSJO in San Francisco):

Oh, hi. Remember me? Yeah, I was the one who started the "Help DT Get Airplay" Web page. :) It still exists. It's been HUGELY updated. I think everyone should send requests to all of the stations on that page for the new single. Who's with me?!? http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Set/5039/radio.html

And several ppl have been writing about the triggered snare in I&W. I'm a drummer, and I really don't like the triggered sound at all. Some of the snare hits were supposed to be "ghost notes" where they are barely audible. However, the trigger picked it up and turned it into an actual note. If I'm not mistaken, Portnoy himself said he hated the sound, but he was forced to use a triggered snare. (The reason escapes me at the moment, but it's probably in the Fuqin' FAQ [tm]).

Oh! Oh! I remember why I wrote in the first place! I talked with the editor of the newspaper here at the University of Houston-Downtown. She said it would be fine if I was a "guest reviewer" of a new album. Of course, I'll be reviewing FII. (duh) This is kinda exciting, since I've never done any journalism before. The school has about 6,000 students (not a lot, I know), but maybe we'll get some converts?
