Actually, I know they have at least two. I can't remember the title of
the other one at the moment, though (I'll need to dig through my CD's
    again).

    Yes, It's actually there... I've gotten on 3 times, grabbing some of the live show recordings (alice's 9 inch tool garden, etc.) that are not otherwise available.;

Anyway, it's cool in one aspect, that there are obviously *quite a few* DT fans out there... but sucks in another, that its so damned hard to get on.... maybe he should consider mirroring (hell I've got an ftp site, I'd be willing to donate a few hundred megs for the mp3s)...

anyway, 9/23 ain't that far off.

Well, after 10 days and three *polite* e-mails to WYSP94@aol.com, Philadelphia's supposed "hard rock" station, here's the HUGE response I finally got: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------------------------------- Subj: Re: HELLO? Date: 97-09-11 19:15:10 EDT ]From: WYSP94 To: James Ahab

Dream Theater is not on our playlist. thanks for your requests ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------------------------------

I'm simply blown away by the intelligence, I must say. I ASKED them to add it, I know they don't have it on their playlist (and I made sure I told them), a simple yes or no would've been suffice. Anywayz, anyone from the area or anyone who wants to help get DT airplay e-mail WYSP94@aol.com...thanks!

    >< as i already said, there's a lot of keys on Awake, just poorly mixed... ><

True 'dat! They're there, but its hardly noticeable with the keyboard sound being turned down.

On to the Elektra issue: anyone have their e-mail address? When I tried to send e-mail from the web page, it sent me to another page and said something about it not being retrieved and the "pathfinder" could find it. I assume the mail was never sent.

    >< The fact that Dream Theater is now on Elektra, as opposed to East/West (I read this in an earlier post?) is interesting ><

They are still with EastWest, EW is a division of Elektra.

    >< He shortly followed this with a comment concerning the generalized sound of the band, pointing out that the "bass never stands out." From my bass-centric position as a bassist myself, I have to question what exactly these above quotes mean. ><

In Dream Theater's music, the bass is rarely the center of attention and is sometimes hard to hear. In the live performances I've seen, and I'm told on FII, it is clear recognizable, and that is great. Now, the musically-inclined listener (any DT fan) can pinpoint the bass without much problem, but it's not so easy for everyone.

    >< If, however, if "crown jewel" is meant as the jewel the shines the brightest among other priceless jewels, then yes, as the guitar is most prominently heard of all the instruments (by nature of its role in the music), then, I would have to agree... ><

Not so...if you have a terrific keyboardist and a mediocre-at-best guitarist, I'd venture to say that the music would be keys-oriented.

    The end people...

NP - nothing SoonToBePlaying - I don't know...I'm in the mood for Megadeth: Hidden Treasures... ah, who am I kidding! (as he pops Dream Theater's 'When Dream and Day Unite' into the CD-Rom drive)

    G'night!

I just got back from DT's concert.. I just don't have words to say how much I loved it, so:

    WOOOOO-HOOOOO! :-)

Amazing... They played over 2 hours... I'm very tired now, and tomorrow I'll be there again, so gotta sleep. Maybe Marcelo had already wrote a review and/or the songs they've played. I'm not in ack mode, so (in case he didn't post it) I'll post some reviews tomorrow, after the second show.

*ATT BRAZILIAN JAMMERS!* If you have a cool tape or even DAT recorder, don't be afraid to record the concert.. The sound quality of the place is not that good but you sure can get a recorder into the place. If you just want to take photos, go already and do it! :-) Oh, btw, if you're going to the concert, drop me a line. ---

And for that guys who have a promo or whatever copy o FII and didn't like it, don't be afraid to send it to me.. I really love the new songs.. I've already a copy of the Fix show. I knew all the songs they played. :-))

Again, to the promo owners: Is a megaphone (sp?) used on Just Let Me Breath? James used it on the stage.. well, we could not understand what he was singing, but I believe it might be cool on the studio version.

THE GUYS KICKS ASS! (Am I right or am I right?)

    Enough for tonight.. See ya'

Whoa!! That's it, I just came back from a loong way back from the concert place to my sweet home. And I must say that my very first DT concert was AWESOME!! I never thought that DT was SO big here in Brazil... Thousands of people jumping and singing (including me, of course :) )... The members seemed to be really impressed (as so was I). Anyway, the set list seemed to be pretty much the same (or very similar to) that they were playing in the Fix for '96/'97 shows. Here it is:

ACOS I. The Crimson Sunrise II. Innocence The Mirror Lie Burning My Soul - I don't know why, but I think the studio version sounds a LOT better live. This song is really growing on me. Voices The Silent Man - electric (JP played it on a double neck - did he ever do this before? I can't remember) Just Let Me Breathe - the cool thing is that KJLB sang the chorus with a megaphone (is this word correct?), sounding distorted Caught in Alice's 9-Inch Tool Garden Peruvian Skies - god, I love that guitar solo! Lines In The Sand (although Derek played the beggining to "A New Millenium") - marvelous! ACOS IV. The Darkest of Winters Ytsejam Learning To Live ACOS VII. The Crimson Sunset - I think that this shift from LTL to The Crimson Sunset is one of the most amazing things they ever done in a concert. It really gives me goose bumps when I hear it... --- Encore: Metropolis - Part I (playing the fast riff for "One" in the end - really cool )

On other notes, KJLB sang the whole show with a Brazilian soccer team (is he trying to kiss ass or what? :)) and said they're coming back, with the FII tour, in '98. Very good. :)

Well, I guess I'm too tired to write anything else... After all, I've got another show to go tomorrow! ;)

    Hi there!

"The Doc" is killed :) so now http://citadel.elender.hu/pod/dtmain.html works faster and maybe you're allowed to get in. And hey, it's not a joke or bullshit. Yes, sometimes it's slow because it's a NT server but now 70 users allowed (yesterday it was 100! and it was full!). Anyway it will be mirrored so you can find the MP3s on other servers. And I don't believe that you won't buy FII because you downloaded some MP3s (Doc's fear).

    Cheers, Peter

    Hey progressive metal fans...

I saw a band called Einstein open for Dream Theater at the Birch Hill in New Jersey a few months ago. Just wanted to tell people to check them out. They're a progressive metal three-piece (Guitar/vocal - Drums - Keyboards/Beautiful girl). {FYI, for you girl jammers, the two guys is the band are pretty good looking too, or so I'm told by females who were in attendance at the show}. Their album (self titled) is on Radio Free Records, C:1996.

I've bought albums by two bands that opened for Dream Theater, out of two opening bands that I've seen open for them--an astonishing opening band promotion rate of 100% (the other being a band called Echolyn). The moral of the story is, if Dream Theater approaches you about being their opening band, do so.

AFAIK, that's all they have. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- They have another, simply titled "World Trade" but I think that it is no longer available.

IMHO, WT *is* a prog band. They remind me of the Trevor Rabin led version of YES - it doesn't hurt that Chris Squire played, sang and co-wrote a couple of the "Euphoria" songs. The music also reminds me of Rabin's solo work.

Billy Sherwood (of WT) is now a full-fledged member of YES and will be touring with them on the up-coming fall tour. He also produced Squire's new (and as of yet un-released) solo album and performed with YES on the Talk tour. He has many ties with the prog world.

    Hey there jammanoids!

I promised and here it goes: the review of DT's first concert here in São Paulo / Brazil!

When I arrived in the place of the show, I gave a good look at it and thought: "Man, it'll sound like crap... there'll be a lot of reverberation, look at this place! How can they make concerts here???" Then the opening band begun their show (Dr. Sin, a cool Brazilian band), and my thought became darker: their sound was very crappy, poor equalization, you could only hear the guitar and the drums (and more: the drummer broke his snare drum at the beggining of the first song... At least he had a spare. =) ) The bass, vocals and keyboards could not be heard at all... They played a lot stuff of their new album "Insinity", and some tunes from previous albuns (including the song with the coolest guitar solo on Earth, "Isolated"). After them, another 45 minutes standing before DT came up... And what a surprise it was: the sound was great!!! You could hear everything clearly (alright... except Myung's bass, that I could only hear clearly for some seconds in his solo on "The Ytsejam") and loud!!! Their performance was amazing... JP (with his new hair cut =) ) made my jaw fall to the ground... I really prefer Sherinian live than Kevin Moore, he is awesome! =) Portnoy stayed all the show screaming to the audience "C'mon!!!" and made an incredible performance (although his solo was pretty short). Myung actually moved a little from his place and came near to the crouwd when playing "Metropolis", but did not say a word. =) And LaBrie, I think it was the best performance from him I've ever seen: he actually sung, even the highest notes!!! Much better than those screams he usually does in their shows. They played for about 2h15min, and the setlist was this:

    - The Crimson Sunrise - Innocence - The Mirror - Lie - Burning My Soul - Voices - The Silent Man - Peruvian Skies - Caught in Alice's 9-inch Tool Garden - Just Let me Breathe - Pull me Under - Lines in the Sand - The Darkest of Winters - The Ytsejam - Learning to Live (with an improvisational solo session in the middle) - The Crimson Sunset Encore: Metropolis Part I (with an improvisational solo session in the middle).

They also played the first riffs of "A Fortune in Lies", but did not play the song.

Now wait for tomorrow! Tonight I'll be there again! =)

Ah... LaBrie promised they'll be coming back in the FII tour, and be sure we'll be remembering him of that!!! =)

DAMN skippy on that one! I've been a huge fan of Duran Duran for years, and to me, they're the pinnacle of 80's pop. Bassists especially should listen to them to hear how a tasteful bassist can play: John Taylor is brilliant, and completely underrated, as a musician. Now that I think of it, ALL those 80's bass players were really tasteful and underrated....

Any other 80's pop fans out there? Lemme know.

    Plus, his wife's HOT. :)

As far as Power Station coming back, that'd be all that and a bag of chips in my book. Man - new DT and new Power Station around the same time! <sniff> That's ... that's beautiful... <sniff>

    Hi all

Does anybody out there know anything about a band called Tiles? Their debut album is due soon, and I've heard glowing comparisons with Dream Theater. Anybody seen them, heard them, know where they come from etc.

Last night's edition of Metalla featured Savatage and their new album. What I heard reinforced my opinion of Savatage - this sort of music just doesn't do anything for me. They played a video (I think from Gutter Ballet) that contained almost all of the cliches I could think of for this genre - long hair being waved around, wanky solos that are accompanied by lots of grimaces, tight trousers, shots of forests by night with flames everywhere. They did, however, display some taste by requesting the video of 'Empire' by Queensryche, so they can't be all bad.

That's it for this week. I'm off to the pub to do my bit for the German brewing industry.

stay safe and happy listening Neil Gallop (nga@software-ag.de) Currently playing: Anathema - Serenades

    Hey all!

I actually made it onto the site ONCE in trying for three days. It actually exists (so at least THAT part was not a joke) but it was so slow, it was impossible to navigate or download anything.

I tried on "off" hours, but where the hell is the ".hu" suffix from?

I finally got to hear "You Not Me" somewhere else: It's catchy. I was humming it in my head for a while after I heard it. Then I realized something -- I like my Dream Theater songs catchy about as well as I like bourbon with my bran flakes.

Still, if this is the worst song on FII, I'll be happy.
