Well, I've heard all the songs off the new album.
I can say that at times it's funky, heavy, slow, fast, etc., it'll take
some timeto get used to it. It sounds as if James has more "control"
over his voice, he gets to the point. "A New Millenium" is definately
cool and very progressive, I'm glad they still have the balls to play
long instrumental sections. I like "Lines In The Sand", it's very funky,
it would be my favorite song off FII if the background vocals were done
by someone else (Doug is terrible IMO). Also I wish they'd
scrapped "Just Let Me Breathe", kurt cobain and shannon hoon? give me a
f**kin break. Why sing about these two idiots, I want to forget that they
    ever existed.
I like the slow song "Hollow Years". That acoustic guitar is just beautiful
(reminds me of a Sting song). "Take Away My Pain" is just as good.
"Burning My Soul", yes we have some heavy stuff here. "Hells Kitchen"
rocks too, the ending gets wild.
I believe the lyrics are good in most songs, (but some parts are shit).

Overall it's a great album, it has variety, it has something for everyone.
Even if you don't like all of it, you know that DT kicks ass live no matter
    what song they play.

I had not even thought about parental abuse... my first reaction was
boyfriends/husbands... with the "that poor kid" being something of an
expression, rather than a direct statement of age... taking the fact
that she is "regretfully" waiting meaning that waiting for the person
to come home rather than leaving him, being something that I would
associate with an adult doing, not thinking of a child leaving
home... then again, the parental case is also strong... don't
    know...

    Hi,

I'm looking for people that trade Dream Theater shows on DAT, and would be interested in having shows put on CD. I'm not a boot-legger, just a fan, and your music would go no farther than me. I'm in the sad position of having access to only one DAT deck, so no reasonable means to trade. What I do have is a digital I/O card, a CD burner (capable of DAO), and sound editing software.

I would like to talk with anyone that would be interested in having their favorite show(s) put onto CD. I ask a clone of the show, and the CD blanks to put the show on. If you are interested, please email me and we can talk. Thanks for the bandwidth!

    Stephan

P.S. If you have DATs of other prog-metal bands that you would like to put on CD, email me too. Especially Angra or Ivanhoe.

Well, as you may all know, ASU has beat Miami. What a tremendous relief from here in Arizona land. :)

Who keeps paging me, "tone only"? I don't know anyone named Tone.

Thanks to all mirroring the MP3s of FII... however I am going to resist the temptation. I want to hear all the new songs straight from CD this time, perfectly mixed (notwithstanding You Not Me which we all downloaded already) and enjoy the 9.23 surprise. :)

Just got the latest issue of Theater of Dreams, the Dutch DT fanzine. Man, this magazine is fantastic!! I really wish I could read Dutch, but I can sort of tell what the articles say if I just zone in and work in context. Color again too. Amazing work by Denis Schoen and co. I also realized by the lack of a review that they still didn't get their PT and DW yet, so as you can imagine I scrambled to get those into the mail... heheh.

Those of you waiting will be happy to know the PT print run will finish by month's end, and I am hoping to have the TDOW one follow suit by Halloween, if not sooner (like mid-October). It's high time I wrapped these two up. It means slower Virtual Songs shipments, but like they say in line at the Birch Hill, "No more cuts, dude." And I've let people have cuts for a bit too long, I think.

    isn't that true?

Actually I think he's suffering more from "Neil Peart-ismo":)

I'm not defending him or disagree with you. I think he's one of those 'easily irritated' types. At least he's not 'acting' for his fans (like many stars do).

    about Peruvian Skies:

Now that I know what it's about, i finally understand the little pun JLB did while introducing it in Nurnberg (did he say it at all the Fix shows?) Anyways it something like:

"This is a song that John wrote about a girl who used to live upstairs from him"

    hehe:)

my name is Luca I live on the second floor I live upstairs from you...

Ok, i've been thinking about this because i was rather confused.

    First, Rogerio's introduction:

    > "Hi, James. We're from the Ytsejam international mailing list and > we'd like to ask you some questions..." >

Is it just me, or does that sound incredibely formal? It sounds like you're about to give him an interview, rather than just going up and saying "Hey James, what's up. Great show"

And James' response left me completely baffled:

    > He promptly replied: > > "I can't understand your language!" > > He turned his back on me and went to talk to other people. Now, > tell me this is educated. >

I don't understand why he'd answer like that when you spoke to him in english (if your gonna be rude, at least make sense :)) They only way my mind can make sense out of it, is that he wasn't paying close attention and though you were giving an interview for a Brazilian magazine. Or is your accent that bad? ;)

    > And to everyone that has the "Lost in the Sky" boot, you may pay > attention to the time where Dream Theater finish playing a song (I don't > remember which one it was) and the italian fans were saying something. > James promptly replied again: "I can't understand anything that you're > saying"

Now this is explainable. Having a foot in both waters, I'm aware how these cultures differ. North Americans tend to express themselves very bluntly (Notice the lack of a formal pronoun?) in comparison to South American (and Italian) cultures. We like to embellish our speech a lot when talking to strangers. Really think about it. He didn't understand what the guy was saying, what else could he do? He could've acted as if he understood, but there are ppl who don't like to do that.

I don't want to sound like I'm defending JLB like a blind fan, but I'm not gonna say he's an asshole either w/o meeting him personally. I'm just giving another point of view. In any case, it definitely seems like James has a, uh, 'volatile' personality:)

about tiles, i sent this quick hit to Neil Gallop when he requested the info on the jam.....if i'm not mistaken, they still have copies of their first album on cassette for only $5!! (includes! S&H)...check their home page ^^^^^^^^ (info below)

tiles: from the detroit area in Michigan, USA, they've released two albums already, although you might be referring to some kind of major label deal which I've heard nothing about

their second album "fence the clear" was mixed by Terry Brown, and therefore has a Rush feel to it, complete with a few mid-80's shimmering guitar licks like Alex Lifeson was playing......

I'm not really sure why people are comparing that band to Dream Theater They do play hard rock, and they do have progressive influences, but, as it says on their home page.....

"TILES is a Detroit based hard rock band. Not Alternative, not thrash, not punk, not pop.....no fancy marketing label no trendy fashions--just guitar, bass vocals and a collection of hooks, melodies and rhythms to entice you......"

you might want to take a look at that web site, assuming you have wen access.....it's located at www.rust.net/~tiles

there are audio samples there for you to judge them yourself

I personally would recommend them highly.....a very solid musicianship with interesting music. Even if it's not as flashy nor as heavy as Dream Theater, I like both bands, and Tiles desesrves all the promotion it can get.....

man, i didn't even think about peruvian skies in terms of abuse....but anna lee....i thought that was the child abuse song on FII

"helpless child....." and then "shameless smile, they steal from you the innocence that bleeds...."

man, before i listened for the lyrics, i brushed this song off, cuz the music didn;t do nothing for me....but the lyrics.....chilling stuff, the imagery it produces....very scary.....

about order of radio friendliness, according to Sir Burstin..... 11) Peruvian Skies

dead last?? I don't know about that....of all the bands i like, pink Floyd has about the best airplay on radio stations......and Metallica is having its day in the sun now.....I'm not saying this is gonna be a hot or anything, but a schizo song displaying the characteristic of two radio darlings, not to mention sounding somewhat like "bleeding me" could have success in certain hands.....

If anybody here hasn't visited this site yet (I don't remember anybody ever advertising it in the first place), I STRONGLY urge you, YOU!!! The fans of progressive rock, metal, and all music that plainly kicks ass, to check out this page! It not only lists the current wonderbands of progressive/power metal bands of this day and age, but it provides soundclips for each band, some even have two or three samples to try!

Everything on this page loads quickly and easily, but unfortunately, the sound quality suffers with the sound samples; they're all mono .ra files. Nonetheless, you can try out the tunes of the bands mentioned on this list (and then some) like Angra, Superior, Symphony X, Shadow Gallery, and many more.

Heh, I finally see what warrented all those great recommendations from this list, since I'm too friggin' poor to go and special order those CD's right now. It's some damn good music, and if you were ever like, "Well, somebody EMAILED me that they were good, what am I to base an opinion on a band...." you can throw that lame-ass excuse out the window and try this stuff out!

~Eckie did not get paid for this, but damn, I should go into advertising

Just heard a new YES song on 93.3 WMMR in Philadelphia.

The song was called 'Open Your Eyes'. It started with a Arabian feeling, but then turned harder more the Rabinish type. Alot of melodies and even a part where Anderson, then Howe and the Squire all shared the leads (Anderson started...then Howe....). The song had very little Keyboards.

It was Yesish though....don't know if it will have any HUGE impact on the air ways though (of course you the hell knows now a days).

NO new news that I didn't know....except he said Sherwood was the new Keyboard player, yet YesMag said there was a new person plus Sherwood. Also the DJ (Ed Shockey (spelling?) - a long time friend of Yes) said he wasn't shore of the album title...yet YesMag reported that is would be Keys of Ascension 2.

    We'll see...later
