I have their self-titled CD (which I believe was an independent release,
so I guess the new one is going to be their first on an actual label), and
while it's not bad, I certainly can't see any DT comparison--they're not
very heavy, and there's virtually no keys to speak of. They remind me
more of a Presto-meets-Permanent-Waves version of Rush, except
without nearly as much soloing, and with a singer whose voice can get
a bit irritating at times. I know they're an American band, I think from
Detroit, but don't quote me on that....

Most 'real' Savatage fans will probably say that the earlier albums,
especially "Streets", are the best. For me "Edge of Thorns" is
definitely the winner, with the follow-up "Handful of Rain" coming
second. On Edge of Thorns the high vocals at the end of "He carves his
stone" are amazing - I wish he'd sing like that more often.

This is definitely very true, indeed.....I've gotten into and bought albums of a lot of bands that opened for DT:
- Damn the Machine - I Mother Earth - Echolyn - Einstein - Rudess/Morgenstein (when their album comes out - or is it out yet?)

heh, well actually, our reunion tour *WAS* only that day, yesterday.....though we will have another show around Christmastime.....
Anyway, I'm really surprised that no one really replied with any helpful hints on my situation - serious tips, at least...
What I did was basically this, for those who may run into the same jam that I did.....
Took some Theraflu the night before - helpful hint, you *CAN* sweeten TheraFlu with sugar (duh) to make it taste better - when you do it, it's really not that bad.....
First thing in the morning, I took two Actifed's. NOTE!!!! Do NOT do this on an empty stomach (like I did). My stomach was in rebellion for a few hours (and I'm a ex-med student, go figure).....
The rest of the day (I took off of work) was basically just relaxation.......
At 6:00 (showtime was 10:30) the band practiced for the first time in about 6 months (I do not suggest this at all), and we figured out what we wanted to play (we're strictly covers still) and managed to bang out 14 new songs in two hours. Now mind you, two hours of singing before the show, including some killer songs vocally (Cowboys from Hell comes to mind), is NOT suggested either.....
Practice ended at around 8:30, which gave me about 2 hours to recover (also NOT suggested).
The next hour was spent drinking lemonade and taking some more TheraFlu (unsweetened, BAD idea). In the interim, I spent some time sliding down a 50-ft. Slip'n'Slide outside the place we were playing (our frat house), which is also a BAD idea when you're getting over a bad cold. It was good in the sense that it wasn't cold out, and it made me relax...
Half hour before the show, I had some Luden's Honey-Licorice throat lozenges, which seemed pretty helpful as well.....
Needless to say, we kicked some majot boo-tay. Unfortunately, we only did 6 1/2 songs when the cops came and shut everything down (damn pigs).....but it was definitely cool, and we rocked nadz (TM).
So if you sift through the bad points, there are some useful suggestions for spur-of-the-moment comfort for your throat...
Which brings me to a couple of points:
- This Indian guy at the convenience store (surprise) noticed that I was getting the cough/throat drops, and suggested the following:
- take a cigarette, take the tobacco out of of the cigarette, put it in hot water, mix it up, and drink it........needless to say, I just took his word for it....
- Any singers out there - do you find yourself sitting by yourself for about 10 minutes before you go on, just to relax and get "in a zone", so to speak? I did this last night for the first time, and it did wonders for me.....
man this thing is long, but hopefully it's been helpful and entertaining...

Hello there, in the jam!!! Maybe this letter is not really up to date, when everybody's taalking about FII and so on, but I just don't have an opportunity to download the songs, so I only can listen to old ones while waiting for the new release. I have never before payed attention to Change of Season lyrics, and it was only a few days ago when I read it for the first time. When I listened to I&W (which is my fav) I saw that the best lyrics was written by KM and JP - they were the best poets, don't know who wrote Awake lyrics (I only have the album taped), but MP really surprised me. I guess he is the best poet of them - even KM's lyrics is worse (though I considered it to be the best). So, if there are anly two or three MP's songs on FII I would certainly buy it, because of the poetry.... I have seen the FII cover (thanx Francisco !) and I think it's very Pink Floyd 's influenced. I don't really like it but it's my first feeling. I was a bit disappointed by an interview in a french magazine (Hard Force), JlB said he want DT become as famous as Pink Floyd and Yes and he wants to sell much more records. He also said that Angra have made 7 or 8 dates in France but they cannot sell as much albums as DT. I don't really undestand these words.

This is my first try to post something to the Jam. In the past there have been some technical problems with my Internet-Provider. Therefore, I could only read the jam for the last 5 month. OK... I've some questions. I'm interested in the Petrucci-guitar (Ibanez JPM100?). This guitar is very expensive here in Germany. Fortunately, I'll visit the States at the beginning of october. I'll spend a week in New York and Boston. I wondered if you can tell me some addresses of musical instroments shops (especially for guitars) since I suppose the Ibanez could be cheaper in the States allthough the Dollar is high at the moment. I already went to the Yellow Pages from Lycos.com and found many Addresses of shops in the Category "musical-instruments dealers". OK. If some NY or Boston Jammers have a special tip for me, tell me!

Hey u ppl! To anyone who was lucky enough to get to the FII promo CD site w/ the mp3's: does it have an .mp3 for Lines in the Sand?? I've tried over and over again and get the "too many users" message. I've heard that LitS was one of the more progressive and least commercial songs on the new album. But as long as it's a song by DT I'm sure it kix ass! So far, I think New Millenium is one of the best progressive songs on the album. And yes, you can hear Myung on that one! I could even imagine DT getting a lot of airplay with that song because, even though it's definitely progressive, it has a groovy radio-friendly feel to it, if that makes sense. Especially towards the end when Derek and John go ape shit! Other than that, it's all good. To all you jammers that went to the DT concerts: start typin'!! >=]
